it's very much sciFI, since apparently science/logic tells us that a "space prison" would actually be very cruel and rather unusual punishment... not for the faint of heart -- literally.

Much easier and cheaper to diggy diggy hole in ground and store the prisoners there.  Especially if they do their own digging.
