needs a bigger sword

Enjoy playing it again, though, I hope there's no scratches on the discs.

Yeah, I looked at the disks last night, theres only one small scratch on the first disk, the rest are fine. my hope is that either, the scratch is too small to matter, or its during a fmv and the ps2 will just skip that frame.

I've seen some pretty gnarly disks play on a ps1, and likely a ps2 will be just as good.

With PS2 it depends on the generation.

Early model first generation PS2s had a lot of disk drive problems and were a lot more finicky.

There used to be a site with lists of serial numbers you could check if you had a unit that was in the danger zone.

Hm, I have the first Slim model. Which apparently is a good thing. Later slims have issues with ps1 games, and now you're saying non-slims have issues with the drive.

Like first generation.

Getting one of those is not very likely. If memory serves cheaper drives were used to fill expected demand for first generation PS2s.

I used to have a first gen PS2 which I inherited from a friend who bought it first day, I ended up selling it to another friend. From what I remember my serial number was on the cusp of "problem batches"

Dagnabit.

I figured I'd have an issue. My reciver /almost/ works with the ps2 in ps1 mode. ALMOST! It doesn't quite support the native 240i/p mode. Tried both the composite and component cables. Tell you what, everything looks WAY better with the component cables, even the choppy scrolling broken mess that is FF7 on my setup.

It looks like I'll be buying a scan doubler or up-converter.

Dang, well on the upshot you can at least get the best quality out of it

Yeah, the downside is the decent, but inexpensive scalers/doublers only show up every couple weeks. Or I can just splurge on something like an XRGB-3 or XRGB-mini (http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/framemeister.html) which are both about 350-400$.

I'm seriously tempted, because the picture quality is freaking awesome. but at the same time, how often will I even play these old games?

Append: but if I do get a kick butt scaler, I will so host some retro/classic gaming nights.
