Title: You guys interested in playing a New Map?

I feel like mining and crafting in the newest version and there are a lot of options open to us here, I'm not sure Tom is interested in hosting again but there are some other options available.

I would absolutely love to play on a new map.  I think I'd like the server hosted by one of us, because that way we can add in mods if we so desire.  Realms doesn't allow any mods.  I'm also assuming you'd wanna play the Java edition like we've been doing all along, rather than the bedrock edition (which works on Win10, phones, tablets, and xboxes)?  Java edition and Bedrock edition have different things in them and aren't interoperable, even through Realms.

As noted in another post bedrock also doesn't really have advanced self hosted server options yet.

I might be willing to host a server if needed, I think there are some docker containers floating around, I can probably just drop it on my NAS.. I have fairly dependable service here, not sure about my own time to commit to playing.

My kids all play bedrock edition however and I am not 100% sure I want to get them on to Java edition at this point.. Despite the lack of mods I fined the windows 10 bedrock client MUCH smoother performance wise than Java edition when I play with them. They might want to join the server.

I have some interest in playing, but I am fairly tired of mincraft as I have been playing on and off with my kids lately.

Sounds like we want to host the Java version, who wants to get it rolling?

Tom, you willing to spin up a new map on your server, and keep it running?  We want it to be 1.13 all the way, baby!  I want to actually swim, not just jump through the deep water, while holding a shield and a trident and following a school of dolphins...

(getting a trident is pretty difficult)

I can probably figure something out.

I'm about to do some work on my firewall, so it won't be like RIGHT NOW. but perhaps in a few hours? or later today?

Queue seed that has no ocean... LOL..

The one I am playing with my kids right now is mostly ocean.. but the new boats with ores and the dolphin speed boost make getting around long distances on water easier.

Don't forget that the water mechanics have changed.. water logged blocks change how some under water building mechanics work.

Yeah man, just let us know when it's available and how to connect to it.

Too bad Overviewer doesn't work with 1.13 :(

Cool!  I'm jumping on with my son.  We'll explore, but we'll leave all the treasure in place (and put the treasure map back) for other people to also see it.

https://github.com/overviewer/Minecraft-Overviewer/pull/1471

There is a new branch in progress that makes it work but it isn't all there. Apparently nearly everything is hard-coded to the old file format and in 1.13 a new dynamic format for worlds was created.. They are making it work by mapping the new back to the old.

It said it was offline for me, too, at least, it wouldn't show up as connectable.  Then I selected it and clicked the Refresh button and it turned green.  I've had that happen with my home MC server as well.

I actually had the same problem with the server list. It threw me for a loop when I was trying various addresses. I tried my mc.tomasu.{net/org} but it didn't work at all?? Maybe I forgot the loopback rule for that. But my local hostname worked for it AFTER I hit refresh.. before noticing that I was confused. How could it not be connecting when the stuff is running and on the right port etc... Ping worked, and a simple socket test worked etc. Silly mojang/microsoft.

Funny that theres a new-new launcher. It's now chrome based. go figure.

It's getting pretty built up around spawn already.

There's a Safe-T Hut filled with stuff and a wheat/carrot/potato farm next to it, a nice mine has been started, there's a cow/pig/sheep farm, there's a treetop village started (they took your idea and ran with it, Mr. Analog), there's a flattened out island just past the mine where there were three turtles (but at last visit they were gone, likely swimming around), and there's an enchantment table (with only three bookshelves so far).  We've also found three shipwrecks not too far away, and have been attacked by a trident-wielding Drowned at least once (it didn't go so well, BMan died, but at least it was ten blocks from the Safe-T Hut).  Also, remember that after three nights of not sleeping there's a chance Phantoms show up at night and attack you if you're outside (we've killed five so far).

Seriously, man, thanks for starting a new map!

It's amazing how quickly it all came back, though I may have to reconfigure my controls I'm so used to pressing tab for my inventory from Fallout "E" seems strange now lol.

Once I build a bed I'm going to sail off and find an island too, that ocean is big and just begging for an underwater city (I'll have to find the new techniques for that)

I did some mapping and posted up a map that shows the location of the next closest land mass near the safe-T-hut.

FYI if you want to help with mapping here are some things to know:

- full details on how maps work https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Map
- maps only map a preset grid, be sure you move out side that grid before starting a map
- After you start a map you can change its zoom.. The maps I have posted are zoomed 2 times.. IE, map, map surrounded with paper once then a second time to get the current scale
- cloning a map is as easy as putting it in the right spot then putting in a blank one in the crafting table
- map markers are done via banners, https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Banner to make the named one, I crafted the banner then put it in the anvil to name it.. then I opened my map and it updated.

The top of maps are always minecraft NORTH.. I have rotated the ones on the item frames to be relative to north.

The N-Chantment building now has a full 15 bookcases so we can enchant up to level 30.  An unfortunate bed incident caused me to suffocate in a wall that I couldn't get out of, and I dropped from level 36 back to level 0, so now I'm trying to level up back to 30 to try and get a Fortune III pick.  The mine has a bunch of diamonds exposed but not yet mined, I want to use the Fortune pick so we get more diamonds out of it.

There is also a nether portal, and I've perfect-matched the X and Z axis so that there's no weird linking issues.  Also, I've ensured you don't need to turn after teleporting to/from the nether.  The nether portal is at Y=112 in the nether, Y=63 in the overworld.  Nice and high to stay above the ghasts, unless and until you actually want to get down lower.  I'll probably dig a shaft down and throw ladders in it at some point.

And I've been clearing trees and bush, but I'm trying to make sure to stay away from where the treetop houses are being built.

Man, I wish there was a mapper working.  Or even just Optifine.

Title: Re: You guys interested in playing a New Map?
Post by: Thorin on August 21, 2018, 03:21:04 PM
The problem is that the way the map is stored has changed for 1.13, so all the tools need to have their underlying map-reading code updated.

Optifine is at 80%, according to its site.  That'll at least let my computer run better.

Overviewer is switching from Google Maps to Leaflet, and are offering a bounty ($700USD according to their twitter) for whoever wants to re-write the map-reading part of the code.

But come on, if they are going to break something it makes sense to actually think about making the new thing less stupid than the last. Of course noone said Mojang or MS made sense.

Oh, I must have misread. Yeah, it'd be hard for them to make a new format that makes less sense. The old format was a Notch exclusive (though looked similar to the torrent file format), and then they extended it to add more tile types since the original format used a single byte to store some properties of tiles. Turns out 256 isn't enough. And their hack-around was to add a second section with another byte per tile/block which you then have to shift+mask together to deal with tiles/blocks with larger ids. GRAH.

I really want to get back to my map loader/renderer. It was almost walkable. But I had issues with culling. Drawing every single face on every single block in the loaded world is a non-starter.

I hope the new format helps with streaming the map data. before you had to load an entire chunk at a time, or if you're very clever, you could MAYBE stream in chunk slices. MAYBE. but I think each chunk is compressed together... And decompressing slices can only work if they allowed for that at compression time. soooo.. yeah....

It's been my assumption and understanding that they've been transitioning the java implementation towards the Native versions. I imagine eventually they'll be able to share a lot of stuff. then they'll get rid of the java version.

I think the change is that they made block storage a variable size format now?  Not sure on the details, but for sure it completely changed how tools read the blocks.

The launcher will let you create a profile with a FIXED / old mincraft version, it isn't all that intuitive.

- Launch options
- Add new and set the version to 1.13
- Save
- To back to any o the news/Skins/Settings tabs
- The play button will have an arrow that will let you set the new profile.

Bah... screwed up the coordinats on my first portal.. don't have diamond pick to correct it.

Created a new correct tunnel, just need the obsidian to open the portal it SHOULD land over the plains.. The nether level is HIGH up so if created from their it will be up in the sky when the other end generates.

The diamond pick was in the right-most chest.  I'm out camping and have nothing to do and a giant data plan for cheap, so I went online and fixed it up for you.  I removed the portal (on the overworld and in the nether) for your wrong coordinates, then figured out the perfect-match coordinates for the new one you wanted to the plains and set those up.

I also built a nether portal that leads to a savannah with horses and a couple of llamas.  The portal is at 40,80 in the nether, 320,640 in the overworld.

I thought 112 in the nether would be safe to dig tunnels, but man, there's a lot of places that I was digging tunnels where there suddenly wasn't any floor!

My kids have been on and off during the days because they can.. We have been on most evenings this week, even later than the kids are supposed to. However they can't do that as much,  today we had issued waking up in time for something.

There is now a large turtle farm / pen near spawn.

If we wanted to be nerdy we probably could scrape the server logs and send notifications outside the game when people are online / offline and track the busiest times to self organize around that.

Other than that Tuesday Thursday, and Friday early evenings you probably will not see us due to other activities..

I found a free server status banner.. I put it in the server status post so you can now tell if anyone is online.
Neat! And there's no personal information there, so like people can't stalk individual users. I like it.

I was worried about advertising which users were online on the internet. Made me nervous.

I found code if you wanted to implement your own.

I think it makes more sense for it to be hosted externally to my setup.

If you enable the query function in the server config it is possible to get a list of players online.

What i should have said is i dont think its good to have a public list of who is on the server at any time. Thar be stalkers out there.

FYI the Tapatalk mobile client caches the status images so it does not show the current state.  You need to view the image / post in a browser to be sure it is current.
