What does player character death really mean? Well, not much actually. Your character will have to pay approx 5,900 GP (material cost + spellcaster) to get raised, and your character ends up one level lower than they were before your character died (but with half the XP needed to make the next level). In a party our size you'd be back to the same level in no time since you'd be earning more XP than people at the party's average EL. And if all goes well, every character will take a bullet for the team from time to time.

On the plus side, you probably died for a good reason and the benefits to the group as a whole might include phat XP and/or lots of loot. So how bad really is it to be the fighter charging into battle with flagrant abandon, or a wizard casting spells dangerously close to melee range, or a rogue attempting to disable a trap far beyond his skill level?

Where is the fun without the risk of death. :)

If we're splitting treasure as I recommended in that other thread, it wouldn't even be your character paying the cost for raising, it'd be the party.

Or at the very least, a hilarious story to tell at future sessions in future campaigns :)

Mr. Analog, do characters who die still get the XP for any encounters they participated in?  Does it get awarded to them after they're raised and have lost their level?

If you had a few encounters before you died you'd get the XP, you may not get the XP for the thing that killed you if the party had to finish it off, but you'd get the XP at your current level for encounters you had, now if you have a new encounter after your raise you'll get bonus XP as most likely you will be tangling with a challenge one level above your current.
