Whether you're looking for an alternative to expensive commercial software or just trying to get a feel for what's out there, AlternativeTo is a handy service for finding software alternatives.

AlternativeTo has hundreds of suggested alternatives in dozens of categories. You can narrow your search by license type and platform making it easy to search for Mac-friendly commercial text editors or freeware Windows image viewers. Even if you're not looking for something specific you can check out the "Most Likes" category and see which alternatives are the most popular and might be worth taking for a test drive.

^ the main page lists links to alternatives for Nero, Photoshop, iTunes, Visio, etc...

As mentioned in the lifehacker article I have used http://www.osalt.com/ before, but this sit look even better as it is not limited to Open source software.

a whole lot of sucktacular software still rears its ugly head on PC's everywhere, even when better-behaved options are freely available. Whether it's molasses-slow bloatware, shameless adware, anemic default apps, or "Your trial period has expired!" nagware, it's time to replace stinky Windows software with its superior (but lesser-known) alternative.

#1 at the top of that list ^ of "sucktacular software" ... ACROBAT READER (ldo) ... but also BONUS the user-submitted list includes alternatives to Quicktime and Realplayer (and Winzip, natch) that are essentially feature-stripped versions of the original bloatware.

No.

It's a list. It is only list.

It is not software. It is a list of software.

Ceci n'est pas une pipe.
