Title: Mod the server?
Post by: Lazybones on April 04, 2012, 02:49:17 PM
With some recent talk about:
- how much each of use plays and who plays more
- Who is on our server?
- People taking stuff
- Secure storage
- We seem to talk about MC all day long
- Land overlap
- The official 1.2.5 patch actually specifically was per-released to help mod authors patch

I started to think a modded server might not be bad..
http://wiki.bukkit.org
There are piles of plugins for it... Some game changing some admin tools... All look interesting.

Personally I still like the core game, but some of the admin external features would be cool...

Interesting there is a REAL TIME web map mod available http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGWliIjOVAk&feature=colike even includes web chat.

I certainly don't mind useful mods added on, so I voted Yes.  I don't necessarily want things that change the core game unless they really, truly, make it better (for instance making boats usable).

There are some really interesting game changing mods in there but I think I agree.

I would be most interested in the dynamap (seems to cover points of interest better than overviewer but is not as nice looking) it also includes an external chat option.
There are several IRC modules, one of those would be cool for chatting... we do a fair bit in game as it is...
Player stats
Admin options (makes it possible to place indestructible items, and of-course the option for lockable chests)

Over all I have shifted from out right hating the idea of mods to somewhat wanting them based on the last update being released in a mod friendly way... seems to show they are aware of the issue, and eventually there will be an official mod api.

I'm of the thought of until there is an API I say no.  Server admin is enough in my opinion without having to go from Vanilla.  But once there is an API and an Interface that lets mods be installed/uninstalled and turned on and off at will, I say no more work for Tom...

Well on more than one occasion I think he has suggested mods already.... ;)  but those are good points.

Mods do make things a bit more annoying for both players and the admin. You have to keep both matching some what, at least for mods that require the server and clients to be modded.

The easiest way to mod a MC server is to use Bukkit Dev, and there are hundreds of mods on the Bukkit forums, some of them add completely new items to it, such as oil and mining rigs so you don't have to mine all by hand!

Speaking of Bukkit, time to update all my plugins, and the server.... :/

With the recent griefing on the Tekkit server, I wouldn't mind seeing a whitelist mod of some sort.  The best would be if unknown players can wander around and try things but aren't allowed to mine blocks or some-such.  Or if they get a message on login that says to request access on these forums or by emailing someone or something like that.  I would _not_ want my area griefed!

While annoying, the griefing on the tekkit server wasn't a really big problem (woo for backups). I'm wondering how the guy even found the server ::)

In the past I have heard of some really fancy admin mods that let you "own" areas and the like. I'm not sure if they are still around though.

padraictoomey could be the kid in the top left of the picture: http://www.tipperarystar.ie/news/local/tipperary-tiger-sharks-1-3467993.  Looks 12 to 13.  Here the name comes up as being part of a U12 Hurling team two years ago: http://www.tipperarystar.ie/sport/sologhead_gaa_1_2278098.  U12 is Under 12, so he'd be U14 now, or 13 or younger.  That seems to match the picture here: http://www.wattpad.com/user/PadraicToomey and the picture here: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/rdVvyC5_ayRSlB-CP8Lor9MTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0.  And then there's this (google-cached) post (look at #36): http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:lsUvfNH6o3EJ:www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1320789-avatar-the-last-airbender/page__st__20+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca.

Also, internet sleuthing is way too easy.

Yeah, I found him as well, though I didn't spend nearly as much time as you did ;D basically saw his near empty youtube page and said "meh".

For people who like to build stuff I highly recommend the Equivalent Exchange mod, I've been playing the Tekkit mod for a while and it includes EE.

Basically if you get enough stuff together you can exchange items based on their relative EMC (energy-matter conversion) values through conversion / transmutation.

For example, if you had 8,192 dirt you could make 1 diamond

You can also build a type of collector that gathers light and converts it into EMC.

Eventually you get enough EMC to build armour, magic items and tools that give you creative-mode-like powers

So eventually you'll be able to fabricate every building material, become relatively invulnerable with special armor, fly and single-click mine. All of this uses EMC which is stored in a kind of battery (Klein Stars).

Now, on the surface this looks pretty far out and why not just enable creative mode? Well it's fairly expensive to get to this point without other mods rolled into Tekkit, and even then staying fuelled costs a great deal of EMC (e.g. a Klein Star Ein, the lowest level of Klein Star stores 50,000 EMC, which is roughly 7 diamonds) so you still have to earn it but it does give you a lot more building options!

Food for thought anyway.
