I haven't even been able to play the last two evenings so I am not sure about my availability... I would have already been in there if I hadn't found it on my way OUT during my last game..

I was thinking we should build a small house / cabin at the surface with the basics such as beds, chests and crafting tables to enable exploration and allow a safe place to log out.

That's a great idea, I'll get on that if I play tonight.

But yeah, if you guys know when you'll be free again soon let me know.

I'm free Sat/Sun for sure

That was my plan to setup last lunch... but server was down.  I might be able to get that stuff put together this lunch though.

Heh. Last time I found an abandoned mine, I cleared it out myself :o didn't have a fallback position either.

This is more about getting together and doing something partially dangerous :P

More of us together, more mobs etc

There was a fair amount of spiders.. I had to make sure to get to the spawn and disable it rather quickly.

Ah, I wasn't aware they could poison you.

The Cave Spider was first introduced in the Beta 1.8 Pre-release
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Cave_Spider

Milk was made a cure for all potion effects in Beta 1.9 Pre-release 2
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Milk
QuoteYou can milk a cow infinitely as long as you have enough buckets. Right clicking with a full bucket of milk will start the drinking animation. It doesn't fill up the hunger bar, but will immediately cure the Player of any status changes or cancel the effect of poison and other potion effects.

Since it cures poison, an ideal source of food would be rotten flesh followed by a bucket of milk, which will restore hunger and then cancel out the poison, respectively. This would only require a cow and an open space for zombies to spawn on at night.

I know I've done a cave crawl / abanoned mine crawl since 1.8. So whatever happened, I didn't get poisoned.

Armor may have prevented the poison attacks from succeeding / luck I guess..

Ah, possibly. I almost never went out without iron armour. Stuff makes you nearly invincible.

I have had a creeper and skeleton team up on me and prove that wrong but yes, it makes you much stronger.

Yeah. if you get the right number of enemies your armour can go pretty fast. But I've had sessions where three or more creepers blow up right behind me, plus having to fight off some skellies and spiders, and yet, I still survive. Sure I have to go get some food, but without armour, I'd have been dead many times over.

Enchanting armor is where it's at. Right now I have protection from projectile attacks, pretty handy against skeletons (or Melbosa's archery skill LOL)

Build a cabin at the top of the mine... be careful not to fall down the pit.

Went in last might and started collecting track... Only encountered an average amount of monsters.

I think the more of us in there at the same time will increase the likelyhood of spawn (not sure on that one tho).

If we go in there as a gang we can clear the whole place in a night (I'm sure)

I made steps and an express ladder down to the mine level.

I already places some of the track in our incomplete rail tunnels.

Woo!

I got a big pile of iron from Melbosa the other day so I'll be making track again tomorrow morning :)

Unless I grabbed the bulk of it, there is a lot of it in those mines... I had about 160 track items gathered last night... However I lost a little in a flood when placing it. :(

I changed the doors around the beach station so if you go down the steps you should see the track... I had some on the slope but the water destroyed it.

Also found some gold in the chests, those are back in my base in case we need to make more power rails.

Okie dokie :)

How far along are you? I'm hoping that mass of iron stretches 2/3 of the way-ish

There should be track covering almost the whole bottom/south of the square (at least the part below standard grade) now... Since i didn't place any power rails, swapping those in will probably give you enough track to complete that segment.

I built a road to the mine from the beach just NW of Lazy's Island Home.  It is light up big time and has a 4sign label.

So I checked out the mine today... lite most of it up with torches I think.  But there isn't much in there that I can see.  I also cleaned up some more track and added it to the spawn station chest.  Seems to be a nice spider spawn down there that I barred up and signed up so you guys know where it is when you look for it this weekend.

I found two or 3 chests when I went in... Not sure how big those mines are supposed to be..

Maybe we should build a monster grinder around the spawn-er. hehehe...

Well it sounds like you guys cleared out most of the good stuff already, might as well clear the rest of it without me...

You should be able to disable the spawn with a couple (four?) torches next to it. that way you dont have to bother with boxing it up or anything. and its simple to re-enable.

No way... there is a lot in there to clear out yet... so much wood for example, and as Lazy says, there may be way more to the mine.  I just ran through with torches today and picked up coal when I needed it.  I didn't run across much iron (actually the only Iron I did see was in the big crevice entrance and I built up to it figuring there was more in the mine).  I think though, a lot of the mine does run into dead ends which maybe with some mining would issue some great rewards.

With the spider spawn sealed up (I just blocked off the exits to the area where the spawn is but not the spawn itself) the mine isn't as much dangerous at the moment.  I did however see more track and mine down where the spider spawn was, but didn't dare go in there alone to try and clear it out (was dense with Spiders).  Perhaps we can arrange a wander down there this weekend as a party so we can clear it right out and watch each others backs!
