Nevertheless, everyone likes something different and even on movies we never always agree.  For example, everyone on this forum really talked up Watchmen.  I didn't enjoy watching Watchmen, even though I could see the brilliance of the film - I just wasn't entertained by it.  The same might happen for you with Avatar.

Yeah Watchman for me was .... meh... that is about what summed it up.  Was alright, was ok, wasn't a complete waste of my time.  But it wasn't huge in my books.  But I was the same about Sin City as well.

i fell asleep during sin city and still havn't bothered to watch it all the way through... but the same could be said for Citizen Cainon my part.

I want to see Zombieland! It looks hilarious! :D Some of my friends have told me about it, and I really want to see it for myself now.

Mr. Analog

There are plenty of stories yet to be told; but the system as it stands today is calculated to bring in a profit which means less gambling on new stories and more banking on existing (or formulaic) stories, so I doubt very much that we'll see much creativity on the scene these days (unless some new up-and-comer blows a hole in the system).

The challenge I give to those who saw Avatar is what new things did it say about humanity?

Again I'll say this; I'm sure it's a great movie with lots of spectacle and emotion (like many I listed in my first response), but it seems like an all-too familiar premise being kicked around again, so I probably won't see it on the big screen because I already have a fairly negative view of it and I could use the $20 better somewhere else.

It's a highly rated comedy with a lot of enthusiasm and absurdity. A funny movie more than a scary one. I kind of preferred Shaun of the Dead but that's just me. That said, it is rated "R" for violence/gore and language, according to the MPAA "parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously".

"Top 50 Science Fiction Films" a majority of these I have seen, and enjoyed. how many have YOU seen?

PS: surprised/disappointed to see ^ this^ was missing quite a few good ones on Mr. Analog's list ( http://forums.righteouswrath.com/index.php/topic,7264.msg46854.html#msg46854 ) ... but I guess if you're limiting yourself to 50, you gotta exclude some. (Listing 107 of them allows for extras, though: http://www.imdb.com/list/1t9qe2TSJ3s/ )

Found a couple movies I'll have to check out. But, K-Pax listed as the number 1 movie....

Exactly, plus they have 2010 but not 2001?

The inclusion of certain titles leads me to believe this is a Hipster List, some interesting titles but, still, HIPSTER LIST

Oh man, I've watched so many more since my last post, maybe it's time to update it :D

Some interesting stuff, some fluff too... it's going to be an interesting year

So here's a surprising B-Movie.

"Creation of the Humanoids" (1962), in a post-apocalypse futuristic society humans have built a series of robots to help them rebuild. As the technology progresses the robots start looking more and more human-like, this is disquieting to a minority extremist group that sees the rise of these humanoid robots as usurping humanity. This story concerns one of those extremists getting tangled up in a plot to actively begin replacing humans, why are the robots doing it? To preserve what's left of mankind.

I don't want to blow the plot twists (I know, I know, it's a 50 year old movie) but it deals with a lot of interesting subjects like racism, love, intolerance, mortality and the very meaning of self.

This is a very talky flick (as are many B-Movies), the sets are limited and it is somewhat direct in its delivery but it's surprisingly well written.

Worth your time to check out.

The twists are much better IMO

The Titanic was a retold story.  The Dark Night was a retold story.  Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter being based from a book are a retold stories.

Star Wars: Retold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJTCYdZTj2A
The Matrix: Retold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMf9GlLXouA

both sci-fi, both retold. So it's related to this thread ;)

Holy cow, where to start? Now, obviously some of these are more adult, so take with a grain of salt.

...
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
by the way, did you know that due to the ridic budget of ST:TMP the sequel was produced as, essentially, a "bottle episode"? :headAsplode:
