I'm betting those are hard boxes with coil bound manuals inside. or even binders. Seen a lot of old software packages and manuals come like that.

I just read about Sorkin's concept, and presuming it's not a disinfo joke, I am actually now less interested in it*  especially in contrast to the FoD "iSteve" film
