I'm really confused about the numbering of seasons.

http://futurama.wikia.com/wiki/Season_8_%28broadcast%29

On netflix I've watched episodes that came after the above ... so I guess the wikia != Canon?

cuz Wikpedia calls the most recent season "7" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurama_%28season_7%29 -- but "I'll take 8" ;)

possible SERIES finale = "Meanwhile" aka "pretty much the Nic Cage movie NEXT -- but with less wide open staring into the camera"

I believe there may be some strife in the fanbase over season designation, this happens with a few shows that do the whole hiatus thing.

The only thing sad about it is that some people legitimately lose sleep over such inane bickering.

My kids discovered Futurama recently and have watched most of it...  The humour's so much smarter than most of Family Guy.

Understatement of the century!!

Sometimes it can be very subtle, and it strikes you much later or when re-watching an old episode.

I just logged into Netflix and season 7 goes up to 13 there as well?

    1The Bots and the Bees
    2A Farewell to Arms
    3Decision 3012
    4The Thief of Baghead
    5Zapp Dingbat
    6The Butterjunk Effect
    7The Six Million Dollar Mon
    8Fun on a Bun
    9Free Will Hunting
    10Near-Death Wish
    1131st Century Fox
    12Viva Mars Vegas
    13Naturama

What might be confusing is that netflix also has the mini movies that aired between seasons 5 and 6

Thorin

Well, some consider the mini-movies as season 5, then the first Comedy Central season as season 6, then the second Comedy Central season as 7 and 8 since they aired as two different batches.

It's almost as screwed up as British releases.

I thought the first CC season was the movies split up.

Also depending on how you break it down, a problem is "Season 1" was super-short, some lists of episodes combine S1+S2 into a normal-sized S1, and thus there were only 4 "seasons" before the first cancellation (and thus the 4 mini-movies = a 16 episode "Season 5", plus the 2 seasons following that ending with the Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom tribute).

I guess the Final Answer to this all-important question is... what do the PRODUCERS of the product say?
Based on the "Production Code" I think it's pretty clear...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Futurama_episodes#Season_1_.281999.29

Season #1 = 13 episodes, ending in "Fry and the Slurm Factory"
#2 = 19 episodes, from #14..32, ending in "The Cryonic Woman"
#3 = 22 episodes, from #33..54, ending in "The 30% Iron Chef"
#4 = 18 episodes, from #55..72, ending in the BEAUTIFUL, HEART-STIRRING, Perfect Way To End A Series episode "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings"

#5 = 4 mini-movies, later split into 16 episodes, from #73..88, ending with "Into the Wild Green Yonder (Part 4)"

#6 = 26 episodes, from #89..114, from "Rebirth"(June 24, 2010) .. "Reincarnation"(September 8, 2011)
#7 = 26 episodes, from #115..140, from "The Bots and the Bees"(June 20, 2012) .. "Meanwhile"(September 4, 2013)

(but notice that the *TV* order is where things get messed up: episode #9 "Hell Is Other Robots" ending "Season 1", and "Season 2" beginning at #10 "A Flight to Remember" ... stupid TV executives... always messing up* good things...)

It's only with Season 6 and Season 7 that ProductionCode is finally identical to TV order (pretty much).

*WOW; #44: "The Route of All Evil", ProductionCode=3ACV12, but didn't air until December 8, 2002 = *TV* code S05E03(!)

edit: and top it all off, a DIFFERENT set of TV executives have added to confusion: "Season 6 was split across multiple home releases: Futurama: Volume 5 and Futurama: Volume 6."  ::)

Good thing the episodes are episodic rather than having a multi-episodic or season-long story arc, eh?  Sliders was bad for mixing up episodes, especially since the end of one episode would see them slide to a new dimension, then the start of the next episode wouldn't have them in that dimension at all.  The worst was where at the end of one episode a main character is shot as they jump through the wormhole but at the start of the next episode they are fully recovered, at least if you watch them in original airing order.
