What an awesome list!
UBER-AGREED! 2008/2009 will be AMAZING in terms of visuals as well as story/feature innovation, I am sure!

"procedurally-generated", "open-ended" (adventures, space sims)... exciting times we're entering!

but to me the most promising phrase (to me, anyway) -- "From Warren Spector" ;D (the main mind behind the timeless classic Deus Ex, a.k.a. VG historian/curator/rescuer, a.k.a. "the James Lipton of video games" )

*notice that DE3 is from Eidos, but Spector has his *own* project... telling isn't it?

Very nice. I couldn't be more pleased to see that big smack of adventure-type games in the list. I've been playing catch-up on the genre lately and am hungry for more.

contents moved to http://adrianwerner.wordpress.com/previous-years/games-of-2008/ ... and WOW check out his 2010/2011 list of releases. Kinda glad money+time = restricts this game-lover's ability to sample what's out there ;) Nice to see so many puzzle/adventure titles too (i.e. indie developers still have a chance of getting recognized, if they offer something FUN, even if not "brand"able...)

Warren Spector's "won" project? EPIC MICKEY. (Not your childhood version of Mickey)

I've been hearing and seeing about Guild Wars 2. OMFG it looks awesome. if its HALF as good as it looks, it'll still be better than WoW. I'm not a huge fan of games, but hot damn, GW2 makes me want to play it.

While yes the graphics of GW2 look fantastic, it has been proven that Game Play is huge in the MMO market.  Aion is a very beautiful game, but it could not topple WoW, barely denting the market.

Time will tell about GW2.

Epic Mickey on the other hand looks... well... different...

re. GW2: wow, intriguing promise inherent in that video! And at about 2:50 in, I felt like it needed an announcer saying "In a world... where your actions... matter!" ;)

It's all ABOUT gameplay, based on the videos/previews I've perused. Having an impact on the story by your actions, in a *kids game*, wow... plus, bringing back Darkness to The Mouse. Coolness.

WoW has nothing to do with gameplay, most hardcore WoW gamers I know automate nearly everything with scripts. WoW is more of a strategy game with a social angle, there are people who get together just to talk about how to max DPS using spreadsheets, databases and charts. It's a game Jim! But not as we know it.

That said, I don't care how good GW2 is, it will never pull away the core WoW gamers (the same way it won't attract EVE Online gamers), they just aren't regular gamers anymore they're dedicated to their games  of choice and just will not leave in large numbers unless something breaks the world they are in, and even then there will be emulated servers rolling around long after... heck, a great example of this "neva-die" action is Ultima Online which, unbelievably, is still going. UO was big in its day but nothing like WoW and there's the same (or more) level of dedication to it from the players... it's scary.

It is scary. But I figure if GW2 really is good enough, it'll attract the people who already left those games because they don't like grinding, and attract yet more people that didn't even start playing them because of the grind fest.

Least I hope so.
