Any and all Fragapalooza 2008 stuff goes here.
That being said, just visited the Fraga site and it seems they have posted a tentative date:
QuoteFragapalooza 2008 has been tentatively booked for July 24th - 27th!
Mark your calenders, book the time off, and make plans to have a hell of a kick ass time!
See you there... Cheerz!
Woohoo! Fraga '08!
Can't wait for some great TF2 matches!
Damn straight.
This year I will be getting a suite for certain. In fact I'll be booking the room once the dates are confirmed.
So, who wants in on that action?
(also, I have snore strips)
I'm in.
I'm going to be all over TF2 for sure. Savage 2 is looking a bit blah at the moment. Anyone else have thoughts of what'll be popular at Fraga in the PC multiplayer domain?

BATTLE CHESS! No?
RB6: Vegas 2!!!!!!!!!!! :P
More SUP:COM!
Forza 2!
SUP:COM is a given for me.
Mr. Analog: I wouldn't mind getting in on the suite, as long as it ends up being cheaper than sharing a regular room with 1-2 other people.
Also, It seems that a friend of mine from NY state is most likely going to be coming up for fraga. Not sure why, hes kinda crazy like that. Wanted to come to a large lan, and Fraga happened to be the closest, and he knows someone going to it :o (oh god, what have I done :()

Well, you can call the Mayfield and find out for yourself.
We won't be bunking more than 5 people though. 4 is the happy number.

I know that a regular double room is $150 a night, and a regular suite has a bed and a pull out for about $50 more a night. There are also suites with two queens and a pull out, which would be nice to get hold of for 206$/night. Only one person would have to sleep on the floor. I sure do wish they gave more than two keys though.
With my friend comming up, I'll just have to see how many people are getting in on your room closer to the actual event.. I don't really want to leave him to fend for himself.

Right! Which is why I'm glad we're having this conversation early :)
I know Tonnica, Lazybones, you and your pal makes 4, if we get two beds and a pullout like we had back in 2006 we should be doing ok.

So 5 total then? since you would be in the room. j/k. I know what you mean. 4 nice, 5 ok, more not ok.

Well, I thought it would be pretty clear, but yes, as I said before 5 would be the max.

Date and Venue change?
Booking issues with the Mayfield. Have to work through some of it before we really know for sure. Stay tuned.
The so the Mayfield screwed something up? I assume the original dates where not announced until some form of reservation was made.
More of a Mayfield trying to be difficult again. I'm sure when it is resolved, you will get an update on the news page of frag.
As Melbosa has said, the title of the thread is kinda wrong - nothing is really certain yet.
QuoteWe realize that some of you have booked your vacation time already and that is why we are making this announcement now, even though nothing has been confirmed. Please bear with us as we work on getting this confirmed ASAP.
If we have to change venues, the new date for Fragapalooza will be August 7 - 10.

However when taken with the VERY FIST LINE in the post
QuoteWe have run into a serious snag that we are working through. We are having some issues with booking the Mayfield and are looking at an alternate location. The biggest snag will be the date may have to change.
Well, resolved could be a new location, old date; resolved could be new location, new date; resolved could be Mayfield with old date; resolved could be Mayfield with new date; we just don't know what yet. President and Vice are working on it.
We'll see, they have to have it more or less sorted out by May I should think.
Going to be at the Sportex, Aug 7-10th.
I wonder how many cancelations the Mayfield will see now?
Ack!
well here is hoping things go well at the new location. I probably should start booking my vacation around this.
Hmm, there's not really an abundance of rentable sleeping quarters around there...
Quote from: Thorin on March 31, 2008, 09:22:35 AM
Hmm, there's not really an abundance of rentable sleeping quarters around there...
But there is the LRT to anywhere you want to go! Plus TENT CITY! Yay :P
I'm glad to see the location and date are finally decided upon for Fraga. As well I'm kind of glad to see the Mayfield get the boot this year. Increasing rates by 100% is redonkulous.
The Sportex will provide a nice change, as well as significantly different facilities. Where the Mayfield is a hotel that has rentable rooms, the Sportex is a stand-alone building with huge (HUGE!) amounts of space in the venue. The Sportex is also a bit farther away from resturants/bars/etc. so people with spacious cars will become very very popular.
Sleeping is easy for me. I live on a transit line linked to the LRT so if I need to I can go home to sleep. I'm not sure how difficult it will be to manage security in the Sportex, but as a precaution we should set up a rotation after we set up. Just to make sure there's someone there to keep an eye on the rigs while the wimps of the group catch some z's.

Theres always the Colleseum INN, its a short walk away.
edit: My place is a little too inconvenient to get to each day, so I'll have to find accomodations for me and my friend.
Ugg, finding accommodation is not going to be easy.
I hate to say it but I miss Mayfield already...

For those that didn't see the full list of crap the Mayfield pulled to force frag to move.
http://www.fragapalooza.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=29623#29623
QuoteThe Mayfield has seen fit to do the following for FP 2008.
- Not respond to my phone calls for 3 months.
- presented us with a contract 3 months late
- INCREASED OUR FEES 100%
- imposed an absolute NO SLEEPING in the venue rule.
- Charging us a food levy so people can bring food in the venue
- Will not accept any sponsor shipping till day of event, and then must be cleared in writing before hand or it will be refused.
- Any sponsor food such as pizza party must be pre-approved in writing before hand, as well as staff meals.
- Extra Power Levy
After seeing this list I think moving was the best idea.
wholy crap. If it was just money, it could have possibly been worked out. But they must have really wanted us gone. They should know that MOST of those bullet points are make or break for the entire event.

Only if you want it to be. Its usually WIDE open durring The Ex. Its the smaller building where the kids rides all used to be. Last year it was a native gallery of some kind.
I remember working dog shows there when I was in Scouts (clean-up crew, blech, but an excellent fundraiser). It's 60,000+ square feet with nothing but columns to hold the roof up and doors big enough to drive pickup trucks through. There's also a concession with full kitchen in the lobby that the Fraga organizers could probably arrange to have open at certain times of the day.
I'm willing to bet that the Sportex is significantly bigger than the Mayfield Trade Center, so if Tent City sprung up again there'd probably be more room for tents.
Tent City is coming back, so will be lots of room for it!
Oh, does anyone know what the entry fee might be this year yet? Even just a ball park estimate would be helpfull. I'd like to get money into paypal before next week so I have a better chance at making the early bird draws. I almost missed out last year due to payapal taking 10 days...
And yes, I'm aware I can go to MemoryExpress or some similar place to purchace a spot, but I'm lazy. Its also a good 2.5+ hour bus ride from my place :)

Seems about the same. I think it might be $10 more than last year. but I wonder if that even covers the rising cost of power ;)
To me, $80 is a good price. I can afford that no problem these days. I'll have to think about getting a tent though. Going to miss having a room with a shower though :(
If you are looking for a tent checkout Costo, I saw some nice ones last time I was there. My last tent was from Walmart and it was very well prices and not bad over all.

I figured I should get seating picked early so we can start reserving seats around a good spot.
I chose the East side, Row 3 Column 46. It's close but not too close to sponsors and far enough away from tent city and the tourney area to be mostly peaceful. And it's still in throwing distance of MegaFPS so I can throw NVidia squeeze balls at them.
Uh I mean in waving distance of MegaFPS. Yeah, that's the ticket! :P
Hotel booking
I know some of you were thinking of getting a hotel on the LRT route to have a place to crash.. You might want to try searching expedia.ca for last minute deals.
I managed to book a room at Sutton Place for between $84 to $105 a night! Looks like that deal is over but there other other Edmonton hotels listed for significantly less than the hotels own online pricing
I think Tonnica and I will just commute from our house, I kept waffling on the hotel thing and it's got nearly the same problems as just crashing at home (distance, transit times).
I figure if I'm going to use a cab at least 50% of the time I might as well sleep in my own bed.
So where the heck is everyone sitting? :) (they rearranged the seating to save on tables, so you might not be sitting where you selected before)
And would anyone be willing to give little ol me a ride to fraga? I'll probably stay in tent city if I can find a tent.

Anyone here got one they can spare? Or maybe accommodations they are willing to share?
And Mr Analog, if you don't have a ride, maybe we can share a cab to fraga? probably have to be a van or something for all the equipment.
I updated my spot next to everyone, and I should have Melbosa's spare PC for my self.
I am borrowing a pickup truck on Wednesday so I can pickup equipment from Melbosa's, I could possibly also do rounds to pickup other equipment but the truck only seats 3 and not comfortably at that.
I have the truck throughout the event, I just haven't figured out were I am parking it when not in use..

I have a tent buried somewhere... if I can find it today you can borrow it.
You rock.
/me prays for a good find \o/
Any luck so far?
I checked the places I thought it would be in, no joy.
I'm checking the downstairs storage soon...
Thanks for looking :)
Oh, and if you could, could you bring the cartoon/animated-show you offered earlier? (for some reason I can't recall its name :o)
Was a the event today, look sweet! Might find we should have had the event there for years before. Found out the concession is open 24/4 as well btw.

That fscking rules :) I can only assume the concession will do
very well. Especially if they charge the same prices that they do at the Ex.
Well, I managed to get everything I needed. Double size air mattress. Small-Medium sized tent, a new folding chair :D new powerbar so I don't have to tear apart my mess of wires here ;D its all good :D
I also got a couple packs of Coke and 4 bags of chips for snacks and stuff, so we at least have enough for the first few hours ;D
I hope you all have great fun at the event!

Me too, I hope you all have a good time.
Its too bad neither of you can make it :(
Earlier, I saw a drinks cart.
I just about @% my pants!
So I hear our attending members made out not to shabby in the giveaway department this year?
Lazy got a 8800GTS 640 gfx card, and Mr.A managed to snag a motherboard, power filter, and something else.
I danced my way to the acquisition of an Intel pillow. I am now famous. Internet famous! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWljU7HvzF0)
In addition, I got swag including a Bawls sack, MSI squeeze ball, and this year's rather nice Fraga t-shirt.
The real bonus was getting out there and playing TF2 with a whole bunch of guys. There was a rainbow of skill levels and it made what are now familiar maps even more fun. I was even scouted as a potential member of Team3 for my Medic skills. Everyone was either calling me Spy (because of the way I was dressed) or Doctor Jones (from my handle and class in-game). Now that was a compliment! :D
So how was the venue? Did the concession make good money? Was the power nice and clean?
Quote from: Thorin on August 11, 2008, 11:46:28 AMSo how was the venue? Did the concession make good money? Was the power nice and clean?
The venue was mostly nice. It looked a bit like we had all been locked in a giant basement but it was air conditioned, spacious, and regularly maintained. The bathrooms had an attendant in there practically every hour keeping things clean and stocked up which was great.
I'm betting the concession made a small fortune off of us. Everything came with fries and it wasn't fancy but it was all very convenient and the staff were all very polite.
Negative things were the vibration that irregularly rocked the building due to nearby construction and the drop in temperature overnight with the air conditioning running. I saw a lot of folks huddled up in blankets to keep warm overnight, but it's always easier to warm up than sit through heat.
The power and internet stayed up and consistent throughout the entire event. I didn't hear about any problems but I seriously doubt there were any. People kept their stuff off the power trunks and there was lots of power to go around.
I'm glad the Sportex did a good job providing the venue. I used to work there as a clean-up crew for dog shows when I was in Scouts. Great fundraiser, and they did a good job keeping everything tidy and humming along.
Didja know you guys were on the news last night at 11? Global had a 30-second bit about Frag. Dunno if this is the same article or not: http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=09efcaae-0b31-4431-a6b7-5004d301c980 (http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=09efcaae-0b31-4431-a6b7-5004d301c980)
The sad thing is we probably have to go back to the Mayfield, and ALL of the good things about this years Frag will disappear. (things like a kick ass internet, steady power, working AC, and a CLEAN venue).
Why would you have to go back to the Mayfield?
The SportEx is being torn down this year. And the Agricom is likely way too pricey to book for frag. The other options are places like the Shaw conference center, which are either too expensive or too small. Not a lot of choices for an event that draws ~1000 cheap gamers.
Well, I've had a day to decompress and think back here are the pros and cons as I saw them:
PROS
- The venue was spotless, cheers to the SportEx staff and the Fraga volunteers
- A concession that had reasonable prices and friendly staff
- Security was spot on
- Lots of fun events
- Network stability
- Power never failed that I noticed
- Gigabit internet connection
- New RAND!!
- TF2!!!! BONK!
- Dedicated Fraga servers!
- No old @%ty Counterstrike official tournament
CONS
- Sound system tweaking. Seriously, when seated you can't hear @%
- Start contests and stuff earlier, not that I have anything against Karaoke at 2 AM... just... ew...
- More events/contests during Fraga spread out through all four days
- 100 MB network cap :noes:
- An attached (good) hotel would be a plus... though the cabs were fast and efficient
Personally, I think this is one of the best Fraga's I've been to (not number one though, I think last year was pretty good). I had tons of fun, everything ran smooth and I won stuff.

He is PRIZ-OR purveyor of pretty prolific prizes!
Well at least he can feel confident he wasn't the biggest weirdo (http://jasonlandals.com/fragapalooza-2008-day-3-the-crazy-games-begin/fraga_day3_0023/) there.

Nice job on the TF2 Spy costume!

Thanks! Maybe next time I'll complete my costume
before an event instead of
after. :P
I think it helped me get into the finals of the dance-off. It had to have, I've got no game! (and yes there are videos on YouTube and Google Video)
