I found this thread a while back about how to bypass the Shaw newsgroup speed limit.  If you're using Grabit, you add entries for each cities news server, and limit the number of connections they can make.  You then use one of them to select the articles which you want to grab, go into the batch screen, bring up the right-click menu, and use the option Download With Other Server to choose a different server.  I usually split the queue between four servers, using shift-clicking to assign a section of files  to each server.  Apparently, there's a program called Newsleecher that makes it easier to work with, but I haven't tried that yet.  I get in and around 600 kps doing this.

Nice, but too much work for the likes of me :D.  I'll just leech telus instead from my shaw account :P.

Unfortunately, my Telus access is completely gone, so that isn't an option for me.

Its not too hard to get a telus account/pwd.  They dont lose out on anything as the bandwidth you use doesnt get counted towards their totals or anything.

Well I gave this a shot and it works VERY well.. for those times I can't get a torrent and want to abuse my sanity with NNTP I will be using this trick..

BTW: Using shaw NNTP servers to download binaries is a direct violations of the TOS

A note for Mr. Analog: don't call Telus to check if your internet service has been termed yet.  Its then they notice that your email and newsgroup ids are still active, and terminate, as I found out the hard way :(

One more thing to keep in mind is that this will also work with downloading headers from multiple newsgroups.  So, for example, you could be downloading the header list from alt.binaries.game.xbox from the Edmonton server, and download the list for alt.binaries.tv from the Saskatoon server.  Just remember to pause your downloads first, as you can't shift servers once a file or list is downloading, at least on Grabit.

Mr. Analog

I don't use newsgroup downloaders, haven't for a while.

Other than kinky porn, there aren't a lot of large files I download.
