The comments point out at least two explanations that are part of the current set of events... ... elixir that may have also messed with him in other ways.

Yeah that's got my vote. "A WizardWitch Did It!"

Also there was a discussion that "the Master" was gifted regenerations by the time-lords, so maybe they can be added.

As I said in my post yeah, not to mention at least two other future Doctors

Best "50th" Review Ever:

...We all love to sit around and discuss television and the deeper meanings of shows, but when it comes to Doctor Who, I think a lot of people criticize it to the point that it takes the joy out of everything. I prefer a different approach, especially for big events like the 50th Anniversary Special: Did I have fun on a journey that decidedly took me away from my own world and transported me to another? Did my pulse race? Did I laugh?

Doctor Who is essentially a show for children, but because the series has been around for 50 years, those kids have grown up and they've remained loyal fans and they somehow expect something else. What's more, there's an entire generation of *new* Who fans who've only came on board after the reboot in 2005, and they look at the series differently, too. Keeping all of this in mind, it's extremely hard to be too harsh on "The Day of the Doctor," knowing it provided fans around the world with so much joy...

re. the 50th -- joy delivery: confirmed! It was indeed a fun romp, even if later analysis and Deep Thought makes you kinda wonder what wibbly wobbly plot holes Moffat dug himself...

And ^ this review itself ^ ... what a wonderful find today; it is overflowing with the kind of child-like free-spirited joy that I can relate to when it comes to this "just a TV show". That spirit -- in much of the series, and in much of the fandom -- is why I admit I am now fully whooked on this show (thanks, daughters!). To quote, "...I'm letting it slide here as a fan because this was a fun ride..." -- this should be required verbiage in most reviews of most Who adventures!

To be honest I went in with trepidation, there is a big gulf between new and old that for a while looked like it was going to ignore the older stuff in lieu of the vastly popular New Who, however it really, REALLY worked and I enjoyed everything they put out over the few days.

Didn't think it was possible to increase the degree of badass intensity of this iconic screen grab of Twelve.
...but this does manage it: http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/198vta5qim6k7gif/ku-medium.gif

via Moffat confirms that first season with Twelve won't be split in half
