Anyone notice there were two new eps of Futurama last night? Time to watch it if you haven't!

Ditto, I saw it pop up before I went to bed on thursday, but that was only the 480p version. Later that night or Friday morning the 720p downloaded and I watched it that afternoon \o/

I just have  my client wait till the 720p is available. Then I don't have to download it twice, and I get to watch the full quality version.

Well, I nabbed it this morning, they were okay... it feels like they could have been so much more though.

Grey goo made of Benders? How'd they not make that a laugh riot?

From what I read it's another post-season anthology type eps, this time they use three different art styles (30s rubber hose, "8-bit" graphics and *shudder* anime).

I'll check it out here soon.

This whole season has been great though IMO

I enjoyed all 3 styles, but probably the 30s B & W the best.

Lela's pun based advances on Fry where rather funny as well in the 8-bit style.

That's for sure, they brought it back with a bang and ended with a bang.

I'll be buying this DVD set for sure!

I may have to agree with your findings, I didn't really think the rubber b&w disney/wb style was all that great, the only line I remember still is what the bullhorn said. I really liked the 8bit game style and the anime. So much picking on crappily dubbed giant robot anime's its not funny.

Yeah, they were going for early Disney / Fleisher (maybe a dash of TerryToons) and it didn't quite work, ah well, the rest came off pretty well :)

So...  Should this be watched in the order it was produced or in the order it was aired?  To see the difference, visit Wikipedia and click the column headers to order by episode number or air date: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Futurama_episodes#Season_6_.282010.E2.80.932011.29

Why can't they just show 'em in the order they were created?  <sigh>
Title: Re: New Futurama!
Post by: Mr. Analog on September 14, 2011, 09:12:30 PM
Well, with Futurama there's almost no continuity so... it doesn't really matter I guess.
Title: Re: New Futurama!
Post by: Thorin on September 15, 2011, 02:47:07 PM
Yeah, I'm gonna watch 'em in broadcast order.  Which means I need to rename files to have a different episode number.  Well, except for the ones that were already numbered in broadcast order instead of production order.

Anyway, watched the first four episodes of season 6 and WOW I'm glad it came back and WOW I'm glad it's just as funny as before!

Some of the stuff works even better now, it feels like they have a bit more comedic freedom now (I don't know why that is, but it is)
Title: Re: New Futurama!
Post by: Thorin on September 15, 2011, 03:02:19 PM
Some of it is lost on people that don't get what it's based on, though.  Like when Leela and Zap have to save Earth from V-Giny - there's the V-GER joke (gotta be a trekkie), the Wonder Woman Invisible Plane joke (gotta know Wonder Woman), the 50s-style space shows in Zap's dreams (gotta have seen the old 50s space shows), etc.

Although I s'pose it's no different than the content from the first season.  Once it's done downloading, Ima go watch it all! :)

Well they are on a pay-to-view network now, versus fox which was a mainstream network.  So they can swear full now, nudity if they want, and politically they don't have to be correct in any form.   Basically it could be Matt's version of Southpark if he wanted.  I'm glad it isn't, but I too noticed how much more "freedom" they seem to enjoy with their plot lines.

Haha, pretty good:

  • I was really disappointed with the first bit, I'm not a huge fan of rubber-hose animation but their decision to convey narrative through dialog did not mesh well and the animation was not nearly fluid enough. I realize they're on a budget but the selection of stock music didn't fit very well (especially since some of it wasn't produced until the 70s, not that most people will know or care)
  • The 8-bit video game treatment was much deeper than I thought it would be, lots of clever nods to so many games at once it will be hard to catch up with it all haha. Sadly they recycled the same joke twice (regarding resolution) which in itself was recycled from Season 1 (episode 6), oh well, the rest is really quite good
  • The nod to anime was CLEARLY the winner here, not so much for the story but for the adept knowledge of so many cliches, I'm willing to bet most "animu" kids didn't get about half of it but for my segment of neckbeard-dom... well all I can say is; Sandy Frank, wherever you are, this episode is for you!

Great way to cap an awesome season!

Now that some time has passed, the Futurama Wikia has that episode in detail... thoughts?

I'm really confused about the numbering of seasons.

http://futurama.wikia.com/wiki/Season_8_%28broadcast%29

On netflix I've watched episodes that came after the above ... so I guess the wikia != Canon?

cuz Wikpedia calls the most recent season "7" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurama_%28season_7%29 -- but "I'll take 8" ;)

possible SERIES finale = "Meanwhile" aka "pretty much the Nic Cage movie NEXT -- but with less wide open staring into the camera"

I believe there may be some strife in the fanbase over season designation, this happens with a few shows that do the whole hiatus thing.

The only thing sad about it is that some people legitimately lose sleep over such inane bickering.

Understatement of the century!!

Sometimes it can be very subtle, and it strikes you much later or when re-watching an old episode.

I just logged into Netflix and season 7 goes up to 13 there as well?

    1The Bots and the Bees
    2A Farewell to Arms
    3Decision 3012
    4The Thief of Baghead
    5Zapp Dingbat
    6The Butterjunk Effect
    7The Six Million Dollar Mon
    8Fun on a Bun
    9Free Will Hunting
    10Near-Death Wish
    1131st Century Fox
    12Viva Mars Vegas
    13Naturama

What might be confusing is that netflix also has the mini movies that aired between seasons 5 and 6
Title: Re: New Futurama!
Post by: Thorin on April 22, 2013, 04:10:21 PM
Well, some consider the mini-movies as season 5, then the first Comedy Central season as season 6, then the second Comedy Central season as 7 and 8 since they aired as two different batches.

It's almost as screwed up as British releases.

Also depending on how you break it down, a problem is "Season 1" was super-short, some lists of episodes combine S1+S2 into a normal-sized S1, and thus there were only 4 "seasons" before the first cancellation (and thus the 4 mini-movies = a 16 episode "Season 5", plus the 2 seasons following that ending with the Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom tribute).

I guess the Final Answer to this all-important question is... what do the PRODUCERS of the product say?
Based on the "Production Code" I think it's pretty clear...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Futurama_episodes#Season_1_.281999.29

Season #1 = 13 episodes, ending in "Fry and the Slurm Factory"
#2 = 19 episodes, from #14..32, ending in "The Cryonic Woman"
#3 = 22 episodes, from #33..54, ending in "The 30% Iron Chef"
#4 = 18 episodes, from #55..72, ending in the BEAUTIFUL, HEART-STIRRING, Perfect Way To End A Series episode "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings"

#5 = 4 mini-movies, later split into 16 episodes, from #73..88, ending with "Into the Wild Green Yonder (Part 4)"

#6 = 26 episodes, from #89..114, from "Rebirth"(June 24, 2010) .. "Reincarnation"(September 8, 2011)
#7 = 26 episodes, from #115..140, from "The Bots and the Bees"(June 20, 2012) .. "Meanwhile"(September 4, 2013)

(but notice that the *TV* order is where things get messed up: episode #9 "Hell Is Other Robots" ending "Season 1", and "Season 2" beginning at #10 "A Flight to Remember" ... stupid TV executives... always messing up* good things...)

It's only with Season 6 and Season 7 that ProductionCode is finally identical to TV order (pretty much).

*WOW; #44: "The Route of All Evil", ProductionCode=3ACV12, but didn't air until December 8, 2002 = *TV* code S05E03(!)

Title: Re: New Futurama!
Post by: Darren Dirt on April 23, 2013, 10:47:27 AM
edit: and top it all off, a DIFFERENT set of TV executives have added to confusion: "Season 6 was split across multiple home releases: Futurama: Volume 5 and Futurama: Volume 6."  ::)
Title: Re: New Futurama!

Good thing the episodes are episodic rather than having a multi-episodic or season-long story arc, eh?  Sliders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sliders_episodes) was bad for mixing up episodes, especially since the end of one episode would see them slide to a new dimension, then the start of the next episode wouldn't have them in that dimension at all.  The worst was where at the end of one episode a main character is shot as they jump through the wormhole but at the start of the next episode they are fully recovered, at least if you watch them in original airing order.

Sounds like the genius that is Arrested Development -- specifically the "on the next AD..." and "previously on AD..." , almost all of those scenes are completely made-up BS that only exists in those bumpers #geniusIsay
