Title: Got Vertigo?
Post by: Darren Dirt on March 22, 2012, 01:29:22 PM
You thought that communication-tower-climbing video was bad... the following "skipping rope POV" video reminds* me of last weekend when I was on the triple-loop Mindbender rollercoaster @ West Edmonton Mall!

*actually reproduced similar physical sensations in my head, around my eyes and forehead! What witchcraft is this!?

That reminds me: no more Drop of Doom!

And they're finally removing the submarines soon

So are they adding anything interesting? I actually liked the drop of doom...

Yeah, apparently the whole mall is getting a facelift. Apparently WEM has money to burn. I don't know what they're going to replace it with tho

OP: that "Full Circle" video is kinda boring, especially since it's actually an advertisement for a certain clothing line.

WEM: I did not know the subs were finally coming out!  Drop of Doom was replaced years ago with the Slingshot and a couple of years ago something got built where the Drop of Doom carts used to come to a halt.  Also, wow, WEM is now only the 12th-largest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_shopping_malls_in_the_world), although the largest, in China, is nearly completely empty.

I'm a little curious how the Persian Gulf Complex can house 2500+ stores in 450,000 m? of retail space (consider WEM has 800 stores in 350,000 m?)

I guess a lot of smaller shops?

probably very few large stores, and movie theaters which I am guessing count in the lease space. Just think of the space some of the multi-floor big storse take up at the ends of the mall.

But 2000 more retail spots? 2000!

I ended up at this article about the Dubai Ice Rink, in Dubai Mall: http://www.arabianbusiness.com/ice-skating-in-sun-sand-83569.html

Quote
Ice Marshals will be at hand at all times during public skating hours to ensure customer safety and a zamboni (ice cleaning machine) will be deployed across the rink every couple of hours to ensure top quality ice at all times. It takes approximately 15 minutes for the highly technical machine to clean the Olympic-sized rink.

Really?  It's "highly technical"?  I guess we're just more used to seeing them at work...

Quote
Using refrigeration plant technology, preparation of the ice rink involves a complex layering process, involving thin layers of water frozen directly into the concrete platform, or the eventual ice rink.
Dubai Ice Rink employs the latest technology to create, and maintain the ?frozen ice' consistency in an indoor venue. Similar to a giant refrigerator, glycol (refrigerant liquid) is pushed through a network of pipes or coils embedded into the concrete platform.

Err...  Don't we just call that a "flood"?

...

It's funny seeing how other cultures and people react to what we consider run-of-the-mill.

Agreed. Not at all effective in a marketing way. But boring and repetitious as it is, the way it's short sure is effective at making me feel sick in the head in the same way as an amusement park ride where I am close to, or surpass, going upside down.

And dammit I don't know WHY it works so well in that respect.  ???

Previously was surpassed by Mall of America (also a 555/Gharmezian Joint) but apparently now WEM is back to #1, musta added more floor space on the roof?

Phase Four made WEM bigger than Mall of America.

Maybe you got vertigo from constantly trying to look up her skirt.

1. thot so; what exactly is phase four, what does it include? (nm, Wikipedia told me ... yeesh 1999? The Famous Players movie theatres and HMV? *THAT* is phase "four"? #disappointing. Oh well at least "we" are like twice as big as anyone else in Kanata (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_enclosed_shopping_malls_in_Canada).

2. he who smelt it, dealt it! (seriously though, imagine you are seatbelted into a tiny Matchbox car attached to the rope as it moves, visually it's pretty much what you would see) (perv)

on the subject of vertigo, and how to overcome it
http://www.thisblogrules.com/2012/01/rooftop-photos-that-will-make-you-dizzy.html

simple solution: just challenge yourself to take a series of photos at increasingly high/dangerous locations in your local city or town!

Uhh, vertigo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertigo), being a medical condition, won't be overcome by dangling from the tops of tall buildings (although it will probably stop because you'll lose your balance and fall and die, and then ta-da, no more vertigo).  A fear of heights, on the other hand, can be overcome by challenging oneself.

However, standing on the edge of a ten storey building without any safety equipment just to say that you can stand on the edge of a ten storey building doesn't necessarily make sense.
Title: Re: Got Vertigo?
Post by: Darren Dirt on April 12, 2012, 04:32:23 PM
Sorry, I use the word "vertigo" as a general term for even mild woozy response to moderate heights. Not as a clinical diagnosis of a serious medical condition.

better to experience vertigo (in the general sense ;) ) than to have a damaged amygdala (http://io9.com/5901289/why-you-should-be-glad-youre-not-an-android-or-a-vulcan), life as a Vulcan would actually really really suck!

Yes I was about to say there's the inner ear problem BUT it can trigger a far trickier to deal with mental problem.

I've had a chronic sinus infection for a long time (since CST) every now and then it will flare up and it used to trigger panic attacks, but knowing what it is and being conscious about it really is half the battle (damn you GI Joe!). I have yet to fall down because of it but the fear of that happening was almost paralyzing!

Anyway, so far as I've learnt is take conscious steps and don't beat yourself up over anything you see as a personal weakness (well, that's what I was doing to myself, I'm like a freakin' guilt machine over here sometimes).

Conquer your fear as Genghis Khan would conquer a couch (http://youtu.be/cPx9zwH9IWc)

On the subject of SINUS annoyances... Every spring my "hay fever" acts up, this year it's been nutso big time sneezy runny DAMMIT I HATE THIS TIME OF YEAR since Tuesday of this week, and yay today is payday, finally, so gonna buy me the cheapest sinus anti-inflammatory that totally works as good as or better than the "Big Pharma" products:

http://www.google.com/search?q=quercetin+hay+fever
http://www.livestrong.com/article/521481-quercetin-facts/

IIRC the local health food store @ Southgate = less than $20 for a bottle of like 100 capsules. One in the morning, good for the day, and within about 30 days of this routine my body seems to have found its own balance and so if I forget a "dose" I'm usually pretty good much of the day anyway (that's what a lot of herbals do, instead of just "managing the symptoms", they assist your body in getting back to a place of harmony i.e. a "cure" (sorta (until next spring!) ) ).

So have you tried Quercetin? Seriously recommend it, bro. Woke up today and sneezed about 42 times and had to blow my nose 13 times but I know from experience that I'll have way less brain-fog-filled mornings as a result of Quercetin. I can even put aside a handful for you to try if you'd like, give them to you the next time we get together (which I presume will be soon, even if it's not for a Moviefilm In Theatres).

I have to be careful about what medication I take, anything that dilates my arteries (which most antihistamines do) can maybe give me a stroke or if I'm on my alprazolam makes things extra wavy gravy.
