I play Empire primarily, but am also working through the Republic side with a Jedi Knight.  With the legacy system now in place, they are all part of the Leviathan Legacy.

Which email you want it at? Gmail?

I'm on The Fatman server btw.

Yeah GMail, thx

Empire suits me, expect a black-leather-clad dual lightsabre wielding babelien (I'm assuming I can do that)

Classes explained: http://www.swtor.com/info/holonet/classes

Warrior Marauders dual wield, where as Inquisitor Assassin's use the dual light saber staff.  At lvl 10ish is when you get to specialize into these classes.

So what is that like Sith Warrior?

Sith is a Race and can be a Warrior Class.  Then the Class specializes into Juggernaught (Tank) or Marauders (DPS).  Once you specialize you cannot change to the other, and you open up your talent trees to spec your character abilities as you level (so specializing your specialization :P).

Does that answer your question?

Yes, yes it does!

I guess I gots some reading to do, I like high DPS warrior, I also like ranged sniper classes.

I'll only tank if I have a pocket healer, I always get @%&#ed over when Tanking

First Impression: ARGH

Okay, I quite enjoyed the intro and the character creation (created a dark side bounty hunter yay). Started getting into the story and WHAM there is absolutely no way I can find to scale the user interface.

EVERYTHING is microscopic, not just text but widgets and indicators...

This is a significant problem for me if I can't scale the GUI!! I'm not going to memorize everything!!

Through frustated googlin' this morning I found out that there IS a UI editor (at least I've seen video of it now).

I'll log in and try again, my smokin' hot cyborg bounty hunter chick wants to shoot stuff...

Okay, I scaled the controls... HUGE difference, I DO have to change the red text colour though, I wear reddish tinted lenses so it kind of disappears (also wtf right in the middle of the screen is the best place for that?)

I was a bit put off by the waypoint system though, it doesn't show marked world locations when you are in an instance (i.e. the starting bar!)

My name is Keive and I talk tough but I really don't know what I'm doing yet LAWL

I'm really pleased with the Random character/name generator. I usually spend hours in character creation but I always @%&# up my first character so I just hit random.

Trouble is I like Keive so far, she has the cutest cybernetic enhancements... mmm I haven't even fired my gun yet baby

I never did get the invite  maybe my previously activated trial blocked it?

What is the subscription fee anyway?

$15/Month, more if you buy more months.
Title: Re: SWTOR - Friend Invites

Jeebus that's pricey...

I know they're trying to get their revenue back for dev costs but more than $5 a month in a time where so many Free To Play games are around, kinda nuts.

I'd play it if it were FTP.

er... I meant more savings if you buy more months.

Yeah they are competing with WoW which is still subscriber based at the same price point.  I agree they probably would make more money if they went micro-transaction, but it is still cheaper than buying 1 xbox game a month.

I guess... I buy like 5 games a year, and usually on Steam sales hahahah

If I could do a $5 commission a month to pay for it I'd probably get in on it, so far I'm really liking the way the story stuff unfolds (we'll see how combat looks tonight maybe). It's a very pretty game for sure, but for $15/m I better be playing a lot of it and I just don't see that happening... I'm way to casual to make it worth my while I guess.

Firefall is looking a lot more attractive at the moment heh

Well, I tried to get on last night and ended up in some kind of login queue so I quit, I'm finding this a very frustrating experience so far...
Title: Re: SWTOR - Friend Invites
Post by: Melbosa on April 17, 2012, 08:41:13 AM
Yeah that is the only downfall to my server.  The queue.  You have a bonus of having a lot of people to group with, fight against and overall good populace base.  But it come with a price of a queue.

You can play on other servers if you are looking to just get a feel for the game and play through it.

I admit the queue itself is frustrating to me as well.  But what is just as frustraiting is being on a low populated server without anyone around to group or fight.

Most MMOs run the queue problem in the first 6 months on populated servers - CoH, WoW, LOTRO, Champions Online, DC Universe Online, DDO, etc... I've experienced it on everyone one.  I just hope Bioware fixes it sooner than the 6 month mark that seems to take every other MMO.

So if you want we could run a set of toons on another server... just pick one and let me know when you want to play!

Post by: Mr. Analog on April 17, 2012, 09:14:37 AM
The frustrating bit is I REALLY want to play now after having gone through storyline cutscenes... I have an attachment now to this character dammit but at every turn the game has been making it tough

1. The UI was absolutely microscopic when I first launched it, much smaller looking than some of the "Let's Play" videos I'd seen previously, through the SWTOR forums I found that it was because many people thought the default UI was too large. I realize this is Blind People Problems, but jesus it instantly reminded me of how much my eyes do indeed suck (this is also why Adobe can go @%&# themselves, Photoshop CS3 is the last version with text that adheres to Windows Large Font settings and their own font scaling is a JOKE... but I digress).

2. The beginners tutorial, oh excuse me, the LACK of a beginners tutorial, it took me 10 mins to figure out how the @%&#ing map worked (once I scaled the UI so I could actually see the icons). I had to go to the SWTOR wiki to actually find all the key bindings. Fun fact: you don't have to click foes, you can actually cycle through them with tab, you can also set preferences on auto selection but that's not easy to figure out when you first jump in (and it's not actually on the official website under the controls section!)

3. The Queue, it's a beta I know but yeesh, get some more hardware EA I know you have the money...

4. The map, once I figured out that marked waypoints don't show up on your radar until AFTER you leave a building I was lost in the starting bar area trying to figure out where to go and how to get the @%&# out

5. The controls are a little err, twitchy, and the way the camera zooms in is a bit jarring sometimes

6. Not being able to pick any race at the start is lame.

@%&# I LIKE

I love the character models and the art assets and damn it's a beautiful game. I can run it at nearly 100% "ultra" settings which kind of took me by surprise, very smooth! (Like all EA games VSYNC is disabled by default which was dumb)

The cutscenes are AWESOME and the dialogue wheel is BRILLIANT, I actually feel invested in the character, having easy access and lots of fun responses really win

The voice acting so far is pretty well done!

The missions actually have some sense to them (well as much as go to point A and beat up some fools can be anyway), I feel like I'm doin' stuff

Anyway, I'm pretty grumpy about not getting to play last night...
Title: Re: SWTOR - Friend Invites
Post by: Melbosa on April 17, 2012, 01:22:22 PM
So the trick to the queue is Log in when you get home... go make some dinner and eat... and check after.  seen queues as long as 50min since the last patch.  The time listed is pretty good give or take 5 minutes.

Hopefully you can get on to check it out more!

Post by: Mr. Analog on April 17, 2012, 01:28:03 PM
I'll try tonight, I'm working from home I'm sure I can get on there at 5-ish

Just pisses me off is all, also I just want to @%&# around alone for a while first, that's one thing I really liked about GuildWars you could get to lvl 20 by playing with yourself (LOL)
Title: Re: SWTOR - Friend Invites
Post by: Melbosa on April 17, 2012, 01:38:04 PM
If you don't want to play Flash Points (Group Instance Stories) or Heroic Areas (Group Areas) you can solo almost your whole leveling to 50.  Your class story chapter finales may need some help but otherwise yes it is a very solo-able game.

http://www.google.com/search?q=free+alternative+to+photoshop
"Paint.net" is almost always mentioned in "Top 10 Free..." lists (as is GIMP).
And "Pixlr" = web based so obviously limited functionality but it seems to be frequently mentioned as well (a quick tool to have in your kit I guess) and since it's on the web prolly does proper font size scaling ;) .
Title: Re: SWTOR - Friend Invites
Post by: Mr. Analog on April 18, 2012, 07:58:51 AM
The problem I have with other tools is two fold:

1. Not all the features of Photoshop are in any one tool or work as well
2. Most free alternatives have @%&# UI (have you even tried GIMP, jesus)

I also paid for the upgrade path like an idiot thinking they would comply with Windows UI standards (as they had done for years) NO DICE

I contacted their support staff when I get to the beta for CS4 AND later CS5 with a comment about their lack of Large Font support and they didn't understand at all what the problem was either time, so to hell with them.

To hell with any software publisher in this day and age who can't make a customizable UI.

Every other server is free though, so I created another character on the next server over.

I know Melbosa was trying to find a populated PVP server but this was ridiculous, after waiting an hour there was an estimated wait of 38 minutes, that's pushing it.

Made it to lvl 5 already, kinda fun but I sort of miss the waypoint showing up on the hud rather than the mini map (like in CoH) I'm constantly checking my map rather than looking at cool stuff.

After having played for a little while I am disappoint, the main thing that's awesome is the character development, it's engrossing and you can see how your responses can change things (heck, you don't always have to end things violently which appeals to me).

The downside is that it's still a fairly formulaic MMO, dodge mobs, hit instances, blah blah blah...

It also has the annoying binding system for gear from WoW and there is no way to change your status bar indicator colours (life bar is a dark red I can't see).

As much as I want to like this game... I can't see myself forking out dough for it, I'll give it a few more days, I'm kinda hoping that there's some really cool stuff just around the corner...

Aye... How quickly most people forget :D.

I remember queues of 2h for CoH after the first real content release!

Only way to get in is play before dinner time... or queue up before dinner and get in after dinner made.

...or use a lower population server...

:P

One feature that would improve the game is visible waypoints without having to use the radar/minimap AND being able to set your own waypoint on the map. (the fog of war is kind of lame too, I mean IRL I can get roadmaps for any backward ass place on the planet, and we don't even have interstellar spaceships)

Also being able to edit colours would help a lot.

My character kicks though yay, though I need a high powered ranged attack for spanking high level Lieuts and/or team up with a melee type to keep mobs off my valuable butt.

Game is still great!!!! And PVP is awesome.  Now they have a group finder with the last update, which makes the game even more enjoyable as you don't have to sit in chat to find a group for a mission!

I highly recommend this MMO to any Star Wars fan.  It is well written and very engrossing from a story standpoint and well designed for casual play.

Anything else you can say about the gameplay?

Combat system is like most MMOs, with cool downs and such.  Your companions do add a lot of chance for solo play and they have their own attacks and strategies - some are healers, others are dps, others are tanks.

Crafting doesn't require you to actually spend time at it, as you use your crew (companions) to do that.  So a time sink that would normally eat at your play time becomes more a wait for them to be done scenario, while you do other stuff - like Minecraft smelting.  Most crafted items are better than drops until end-game; although some still are better even than that from Flash Points (group instances) or Operations (raid instances) at 50.

Space flight is a nice distraction from the other game play.  It plays like Star Fox, and it does offer nice rewards and credits for doing them.

World exploration is such a nice sight.  The worlds are so much like the movies, cartons and books that you really feel like you are in that universe.  Hoth is so much like its movie counterpart that you can almost make out locations as you transverse the tundra.  Tatooine is itself almost perfect at least from what I have seen of the Empire story lines.

The linage system is very nice addition to the game, letting you start and setup your own Legacy (think Vader and Luke here).  You set up how your toons are related and once you gain enough social points, legacy levels or just regular levels you start to see bonuses for your alts appear, and sometimes even for your Main head of your Legacy.  While most of these are helpful in solo play, you really can't use any in group play over 2 players, and not in PVP- balance for people whom don't level a lot of characters.

What else would you like to know?
