Time to update the server :P

Speaking of such things.. I just went to check to see if Bukkit or Spigot has even a dev version for 1.8, (obviously no) but theres some strange news. One of the main devs quit (announced he's shutting down the project), then mojang took over the forums, and code. (They bought it ages ago so legally its fine). So bukkit will be updated to 1.8, but it looks like its under new management (Grum, Jeb, and Dinnerbone).

That's only part of it. That happened after Mojang started taking over the project after the "shut down" post was made.

It's thought that that guy is upset that he didn't know mojang owned bukkit (I've known about it for quite some time and I'm not even a bukkit dev...), and once they took it over, he filed a DMCA claim cause his /gpl/ code is still in bukkit which isn't GPL compatible (it includes mojang's minecraft server code, so it can't possibly be gpl compatible till that code is made gpl compatible).

Some people are (dumbly) arguing that any code ever submitted to a project is now owned by the project, but that is false. Projects actually need to set up a legal contributor license agreement, where by the copyright is transferred to the project (which means it also has to be a legal entity, bukkit wasn't, at least before being bought by mojang).

The guy does probably have a leg to stand on, unless he did sign onto a CLA assigning copyright of his submissions to bukkit/mojang.

I think mojang can just rip out his code and call it a day.

Huh, I expected it to be a lot older than 1.7.2.

In the last couple of years MC development cycle has been a lot faster, so, not so surprising any more. There was ~1 month between 1.6.4 and 1.7.2

April this year saw 4 minor versions alone.

Like I say, I'm keen to get onto 1.7.10 because after having played it at Fraga I was really impressed with how well it played, even when some of us were doing really (usually) laggy things

Yeah, I'll attempt to work on the upgrade soon. The planetbob update wont be much work, but the usamot update will be interesting.
Title: Re: 1.8 is out
Post by: Mr. Analog on September 04, 2014, 11:00:49 AM
One of the 1.7.x updates made updating from 1.6 easier (supposedly)

But yeah, it would be cool to play in both worlds again.

...which reminds me, with everything going on last week I didn't get a chance to push up a test server for the maps I've made B'OH

Well, we'll see what happens. If bukkit/spigot isn't updated somewhat soon, we'll just have to dump it. But that might mean faster update rates :o

If we return to vanilla, what functionality do we lose that's commonly used?

I'm thinking the /spawn /home /back commands are the most commonly used.

How about white listing, is that supported in vanilla MC?

And turning off mob griefing so the creepers don't blow up our builds, that's in vanilla, right?

Essentially all we lose now is the warp commands. There used to be other things... Oh, that live map thing we'd lose too. its a bukkit plugin.

I haven't yet, but I've heard the final release is more laggy than normal :( even though the snapshots were less laggy and faster (much faster) than any version to date. It's odd really.

I did start trying to play Agrarian Skies yesterday. I might continue... But holy grind batman.

Ah, but by those, you better have an me system up and running or something. I'm at the very beginning working on fn string. And even that is a nasty grind. cause you need to get trees infected, and the leaves have been nerfed since people recorded those playthroughs... I got like 4 silk from a single large tree. and it takes 9 silk for a string. lol.

One of the "for the lawls" challenges is something like 8 octo compressed cobble. That's like tens of millions of actual cobble. One dude set up what he called a "Lag spine" to generate cobble. when ever he warped there, the game got significantly more laggy. lol. huge tower of cobble gens.
Title: Re: 1.8 is out
Post by: Mr. Analog on September 08, 2014, 02:26:22 PM
Yeah, as you progress through the challenges the curve goes up dramatically and you end up mostly tinkering with automation and setting up complex workflows to meet the target goals, even with multiple players it takes a while to get through it

I do like what some of the mods bring though, especially when playing a modpack like Yogscast Complete you can make stuff that can sometimes be a pain in the butt to find in the world (like clay!), then take it to the next level with Mekanism / Applied Energistics to automate the process.

I think back to my solar panel factory in FTB and now I could do it with Factory blocks, ME Computer, Pattern Encoder, etc. I could manufacture almost all the components needed and automate the crafting AND set it up so it was on demand. It's amazing how far some of these mods have come

I've played a little bit of 1.8.

The new enchanting system is a definite improvement, and now there's finally a use for lapis lazuli. The new Villager trading system is better as well.  I haven't done any large construction projects yet, but I can see the new stone types being useful for variety.  Different types of fences and gates has been useful as well. I've been using dark brown oak fences with lighter birch gates so it's easier to see where the gates are.

I haven't really come across an other new stuff yet, except for rabbits, which have only dropped raw meat for me so far.

I have experienced a lot more graphical glitches than in the last few versions.

The concern was going to vanilla and losing extra functionality, but when that was looked at in detail, I don't think anyone will really mind losing the extra functionality.

Tom, is it difficult to switch from Bukkit back to vanilla?

Also, without the warp commands we'll be building railroads and tele-portals again :)
Title: Re: 1.8 is out
Post by: Mr. Analog on September 17, 2014, 09:35:30 AM
Well, there is a portal hub already set up and woefully empty at the moment, give me a list of co-ords and I'll set up command blocks for everyone

I think the big change for me is to just start stockpiling buckets of lava and making sure crafting stations and materials are closer to builds; that's usually what I was using the /back and /home commands haha

Question: is the time involved more about upgrading the maps like when we trimmed the old Usamot map?

If so I don't think we need to trim again, not for a long time, just get them up to latest greatest
Title: Re: 1.8 is out
Post by: Tom on September 19, 2014, 12:57:28 AM
I don't think a trim is needed either, but it isn't what is holding things back. mostly my lazyness and energy level is holding it back.

The old map needs some tlc to get it updated so things don't break. And once we do upgrade, we lose the option of a hub world. No bukkit/spigot, no linked servers.

Hmm, I didn't expect that. Must be a weird glitch? Minecraft can get pretty glitchy.

ALSO the server was acting pretty laggy when I was on checking things out. It was peggin both cores of the vm just while I was walking around. Maybe that'll get better... But everything I've heard says that 1.8 smp is super laggy.

Note to self the /tp command does not have an automatic y coordinator safety to put you on the surface. It will happily to you to under the map if you enter 0 0 0

Didn't need that diamond enchanted gear now did I.

Also the command block to tp back from the mob spawned was removed ? And replaced with a really long walk back?

It was there a couple of days ago, but it wasn't working.  I have no idea why.  I copied the command and entered it from the console and it worked fine, but nothing was happening when I pressed the button.

update: I made a new one in a slightly different position, and it works, so I've removed the old one.

p.s.  It hadn't been removed, it just wasn't working
Title: Re: 1.8 is out
Post by: Mr. Analog on October 14, 2014, 08:31:18 AM
I validated my own TP block commands first day we had 1.8 going and didn't have any issues, I think I may have been a little OCD setting them up in the first place because I did make note of all three co-ords and they should be in the blocks.

If anyone needs more blocks set up let me know, I don't mind taking the time to set up blocks to help people get around the map. PM me a list of co-ords and I'll set them up over the week.

Cheers

P.S. Redstone timing / signal strengths seem different, so if you had any redstone gizmos and haven't tested them I suggest you do, in a lot of cases it was just moving repeaters around, fairly minimal but annoying when you expect stuff to just work.
