QuoteDear Shaw Internet Customer

In order to provide all Shaw Internet customers with an optimal Internet experience we proactively assess our network. Through our analysis we have noticed that the level of activity on your Internet account is more than 30 to 50 times that of our average Internet user.

We would like to help identify the cause(s) of the heavy traffic that may be affecting your computer?s performance and most importantly your Internet experience. Often a file sharing program can be the cause of high amounts of traffic. Not only will this affect the flow of traffic on the Internet it also puts a major strain on your computer?s resources.

I then sent a reply and got a phone call.. The basic response is that if I go over again they will call me again as there is no policy for extra charges or account termination at this time.

LOL I love having 5Mbit down and 1Mbit upload speeds.. Now to find a way to restrict my usage without restricting my fun.

Shayne

Actually they do have a policy for account termination...well, suspension.  I have served a five day suspension in my history of being an iXtreme subscriber.

They told me you get 3 warnings, and on the 3rd warning you get the suspension, and everytime you break 50GB they suspend you again.

Keep in mind its not 50gb a month.  its 50gb in a 30 day period.

Thorin

Good god, that's 10.3GB per day!
Prayin' for a 20!

gcc thorin.c -pedantic -o Thorin
compile successful

Lazybones

Well that suspension and 3x rule was not indicated to me at all, even when I directly asked about penalties.
I will be reducing my use to try and avoid any more, and am thinking about upgrading my account.

I am in the top 20 for use on the network right now, but from the sound of it they are still not metering some users.

Running P2P 24/7 and keeping the connection at about 1Mbit/s at most times adds up.

I calculated that if the connection could be run at full upload and download for 30 days you could transter almost 2GB of data.

Melbosa

Man I hope I'm a while yet.  According to my Router, my throughput was 586GB last month...

Which makes sense when I downloaded over 85GB yesterday from Newsgroups :o

Which reminds me that using NNTP for bulk downloads is against the TOS agreement.

Shayne

I used to download so much, but after serving a 5 day suspension *over a weekend* i felt sorta lost.  Now i pretty much just stick to PC/Xbox games...my webserver as well (averages 10-15gb a month)

Good luck guys :)  Hopefully you dont have to feel the wrath of Shaw.

The funny thing is that I am not the super down-loader in my household. I already have QOS in place so that I can use the connection at full capacity and still game and surf.. Now I am going to look into metering software for my router.

I think I should be ok... last month was just crazy for peeps getting stuff off me through my FTP.

I do pay for a business account, and have yet to be pestered, even before the I-Extreme account.  Hope I continue on that way. :D

*randomly picks thread from a few days ago to live up to the title that I only recently noticed, "Thread Resurrection Specialist"*

Well, um... *considers how to appear still on-topic* I hope my occasional BitTorrent usage doesn't put me over... *shuffles feet* *hangs head and slowly walks offscreen*

Seriously, I love finding out what title The All Powerful Admins give me, it's like a birthday present only less wrapping paper to dispose of!

Got my notice yesterday.  Seems I did 213GB down and 42GB up (thx Ustauk :P) last month... kewl eh.

Not a big deal, as my letter was a little more soft as I pay for a business account for a reason.  But still asked me to please reduce the traffic as I was in the top 10 in Millwoods region (was 3rd I think).

Hehe.. Well I have tired to reduce my household use but it looks like I will only be 100GB less than last month at this rate..

O well.

Got to love bittorent.

Oops, sorry.  Don't worry, I'm pretty much done downloading for now.  Although if I see something nice, I may request that you put it on those cheap Matrix DVDs, and I'll bring you some replacements at DnD :)
