Lifetime upgrades is a bad business model, especially if your product becomes less and less attractive to new customers.

They are already wiggling around that implying subscription features that you can only get in addition.
There is Emby/Jellyfin as alternatives to plex.
Same goes for mIRC, there are opensource alternatives that ARE good.
