Well, I got my first taste today, serious framerate issues and the default FOV is really close (even for me)
The intro quests are really FETCHY and not fun, I'm also not a fan of the UI. This game was clearly designed for a controller.
I feel like it will get better but man, I had more fun playing Starbound!
That's what I heard as well as serious server bugs atm.
My first stab here, the lag you see isn't twitch it was actually in game:

THIS CAN BE SO GOOD BUT ITS NOT READY
I was planning on checking it out this weekend if I have time..
I heard... I thunk i might just refund it for now and wait :( i was soooo looking forward to it. :( :( :(
Played for 3 hours... Didn't have as much trouble getting my ship going since the planet I started on wasn't killing me but damn am I board of shooting plants/rocks and searching sparse generic structures on different worlds.
Going to read up a bit as apparently there is combat and other stuff but damn if I have to fly for hours to find it I am already done.
Putting a bit more time in... Finding / crafting things to increase your inventory helps a bit.
The language learning sounds cool but is actually really grindy when you only learn one random word at a time and apparently there are over a hundred per species.
Not lost on this game but at the same time it is a slow slow slow paced game.
More trading and stat building than action.
Things pick up a bit if you follow the main quest... You also start to get attacked by pirates and stuff.. However I find the ships flight controls so horrible that it is hard to hit the pirates... So far I have just repaired my shields and ran.
The space travel makes me slightly dizzy

I found this little demo by the main dev to be quite detailed and it maintained my interest (posted back in April 2016) -- the SCALE is unmatched anything before by the looks of things. The procedural CREATURES** alone amazes me, when I think back to when SPORE was first being demo'd. That feels like only a couple of years ago...
But I can imagine some parts of NMS quickly become grind-y though.

I have logged only 13hrs and that review is spot on...
I haven't maxed out my gear yet or finished the one vague quest line I have been working on but the review sums it up.. They also failed to note that inventory and upgrades take up the same slots in the three things that have them, your ship, suite and omnitool.. You are constantly in search for more space for all three and while you can visually get different ships and omnitools they only differ in slots and in the case of the ship some cockpit viewing space.
Found this video that is a compilation of many videos and contradictions from previous E3s.
In several places real gameplay has been cut over the original E3 stuff.

If they patch some of this in it would sure make the game more interesting.
Even with the massive bubble pop, I'm still so very tempted to play. I'm sure I could get many hours out of it.
I didn't follow the game at all since one of the E3 presentations where I first heard about it. So I'm not really expecting what most people are.
I'm mostly scared about performance and the potential for something in the game play to discourage me.
In the end I'm sure Hello Games just bit off more than they could chew and Sony's influence probably changed things.
Did hear that it was initially supposed to be a native pc game but it seems it uses a bunch of Sony tools lol.
All I wanted out of the game was exploring the vast universe and cataloging things, everything is SO JANKY I can barely play it
I'm going to try it again soon with a controller and hopefully get a better starting planet. If I'm going to play a game where I have to grind everything I'd rather go back to Starbound
Starbound is actually relaxing, No Man's Sky is just constant stress
The game is supposed to get a major fix patch within a week and there is hint of a second patch in the works with maybe more.
If you are only out to explore and catalog then the game has lots of that. I still plan on putting more hours into it but I am disappointed with several functions that appear to be missing or have not yet been discovered. More major things like faction standing mattering, and more space combat than just random pirates.
Also no matter how lifeless ALL planets have seemingly the same distribution of the core resources, as well as the generated structures making them much less distinct... I suspect this was done to prevent players from finding nothing or getting stranded, but there are other ways that could have been handled.
I think I may be a little too hard on it
I expected the first part to be a lot more magical and a lot less "survive your first night". I was hoping it would be like start out at a space station and set a course for a random planet and start exploring that way and gear up as you go

If you delete your save and start the game, then end then start without going in and out of your ship it will not save and will put you on a different starting planet each time... If you find one without environmental damage it makes walking around to look for your initial repair supplies much easier.
Also you really only need to repair and fuel the thrusters to start exploring the planet with your ship.

Yeah I just followed some steps to remove my save state however I couldn't get it to de-sync with Steam cloud properly so I'm doing a re-install
I hate the UI as well, it's hard for me to read / use and the starting world I ended up playing on made it worse (it was all snow)
I'm going to take another stab at it, maybe tonight
Barring the negative posts I have made, there is fun to be had in the game.. It is just they WAY over promised this one, and it does have issues with its core mechanics.
If anything it has made me more excited for Star Citizen and Squadron42, as I personally prefer having more mission based content and more detail in my vehicles and weapons.
Just wanted to know if worth the full price or if I should wait for sale/patches.

It's back now
FYI the patch has not landed yet, there is a big CAPCOM sale... a lot of games 40% off or more
OK after a few weird glitches today (was getting weird flickering for a while) I've finally gotten into the game. I created a new save which was KEY the planet I started on was quite pleasant, big open fields, nice warm temperatures a good variety of life and material nearby
I've made it to my first space station and my first outpost as well as an abandoned outpost. There is a lot to do which amounts to busy work, the "Sentinels" are there to just stop you from flooding the market from mining, it's a bit unrealistic but I get it
Anyway, this game is kinda slow and plodding and is both fascinating and frustrating. When you start finding interesting things the game opens up, but there's a lot of nothin' too
I'm having fun with it now (it's almost 1:30!) but I would wait for a sale if I were you

Bingo
I also get strange flickering when on the space stations only.
FYI pirates will attack you if you leave orbit with a large amount of gold or high value cargo as well.
If you run into the large transport ships in orbit attacking them for resources will also get you attacked.
So far the only commodities I've seen that have a positive value are basics like carbon and plutonium
Crafted items and found items also fetch a good price (usually)

Suit slots upgrades are found in those little drop ships that have a holo backpack on them, you get the slot instantly. There are also upgrade terminals on the space stations after you find an Atlas 1 pass.
Guns are upgraded by replacing the gun, same with ships.. You need to find them.. They game will automaticly make them + or - 1 or 2 the current number of slots of you gun or ship.

i googled and it seems to be related to the steam fps being on or the steam overlay. People have reported turning either off will fix it. Havent tried it yet. Possibly it might have been me changing to uncapped fps that did it as well. I get decent framerates.
Yup, disabling the FPS counter stopped the constant flickering, but it comes back temporarily when steam pops something up. Disabling the overlay entirely fixes it completely.
I have spent so many hours exploring one single planet... I don't think I'll be doing that again lool. Almost finished hitting the waypoints, then I'll go find that orb I missed at the beginning to allow me on the Atlas path...
Does anybody know if the atlas pass crafting recipe is a random drop or a triggered event?
I've literally found dozens of containers and locked doors that need these things...

If you see the space anomaly appear in your system one of the quest givers there will give it out randomly.. It is also given out randomly by other NPCs... However it isn't that common... It takes hours for some people.
It gives you access to two things that are better.
1. In locked buildings there is often a suit upgrade terminal behind the door.
2. those container often contain antimatter or vapour so it speeds up getting warp fuel
the V2 and v3 passes seem to open mostly empty rooms which appear to be incomplete content.
Interesting!
OK I actually have the recipe for antimatter now, I also have a dig tool with 10 slots. I seem to be getting everything backwards oh well
It's fun-ish (like you say, grindy)
I found some ruins today which was kinda cool, was getting kind of bored of monoliths.
Also some of the puzzles are interesting, I had to solve a pattern matching thing

There is no backwards in the game since the generation system doesn't really care what order you do things... The atlas quest has a specific order but it is more checkpoint based so there is that (don't trade the stones, you need to keep them for the end of the quest).
There isn't much else to the game other than exploring... Looking at reddit there is interesting stuff to find however it is all somewhat random... You could just end up finding a lot of the same over many hours.
I had to go manually find the antimatter blueprint. Sigh.
I just launched my ship and ended up in orbit. Am confused.
The most annoying part for me so far is that the hit boxes can be a bit opaque. So you end up having to maneuver around a foreground object to get the background one to activate. And especially that waypoints and beacons can re-activate an already visited location. And those stupid markers will stay on your hud IN SPACE AND OTHER PLANETS. So you have to go back and visit already visited locations to get the stupid markers to go away.
Yeah I wish there was a way to set HUD filters!
Or at least the game could just know that you've already been to a location before trying to send you there again lol.
New annoyance. If you don't get every single chunk of a ore deposit (like gold) it will look like the entire deposit is still there if you walk a ways away. ugh.
I just minecrafed a little tonight :o
Aka: Got myself lost in a cave, and eventually decided to blast my way out the roof of the cave. :D
That grenade launcher tool is very useful. One shots those flying sentinels and digs through all kinds of terrain. I basically stopped using the other gun like tool.
Hmm I have the recipe for them but never built them
Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk
That there plasma launcher is super useful.
If you just keep trading up your gun you also tend to inherit one with a bunch of the upgrades as well.

Super old news, people found that out within a short period of launch.. and users VERY frequently run across systems other users have.
While the game has billions of planets everyone starts in the same galaxy and is given a similar objective which drives them into potentially overlapping paths.
The RNG could just be placing them in the same general area. True random would lead to overlap, but not SIGNIFICANT overlap. an entire galaxy has billions upon billions of stars, and many of them are on the outside ring of the galaxy, which is where i thought people were getting placed. Out in the arms.

It got a little easier when I boosted my shields / beam weapons (also when I figured out that you can press "X" in space to switch guns) but still I've yet to win a dogfight
Interestingly enough if you go right back to your grave all your stuff will be there with no enemies so... what's the point of it?
I'D SAY "beta is beta" but this was released as a finished game
I generally don't have a lot of "fun" per-se playing any game, but this one has at least kept my interest. I still need to find a bloody atlas interface and junk. TBH I find it relaxing most of the time
The only things I find really janky now are the space stations. WHY SO BIG? Just give me a menu screen like in
CosmonauticaMan! If they combined the charm of
Cosmonautica with the VASTNESS / FPS of
No Man's Sky it would be AMAZING
OH YEAH word to the wise move that FOV slider to the maximum the game becomes WAY more playable. It didn't occur to me until just now that that was a thing I did that made things less "pukey" for me
If you get lost on the Atlas path there should be an Anomaly (it is actually a space station size ship) that appears in your current star system or next eventually. An NPC there will give you the option to re-join the path.
Yeah. The fov is very important. You can bump it up further with an ini setting iirc.
Theres also a nice mod to disable the "instagram (brown) filter" the game puts over everything.
I do find it relaxing most of the time. Basically why I play it.

Not so much lost, as Im not on "the path" to begin with. I skipped the initial orb thing. I think I either have to go back and find it, or what.. I dunno. Haven't seen any evidence of an anomaly yet.

Ahahaha talk about timing. I found an anomaly and got my AtlastPass v1 (finally)
I found a new 24slot multitool last night so i didnt have time to go look for an anomaly or anything :o also was stupid tired after two days in a row of <6hrs sleep, so i had to hit the hay early :(
I've been wanting to play so bad, especially after watching lets-plays of it. Was just too tired to play for very long last night. :(

I have considered a refund but at the same time it was a gift and I got a few hours out of it...
What do you think Mr. A?
Without without some more content I think it will end up on the shelf.. I did log back in and encounter a fairly large space battle the other day.. I attempted to help the ship that sent a distress call but found it kind of difficult... I didn't have any accept mission type interface so everyone conned neutral so I just flew in close to the ship with the distress call and started shooting at the fighters attacking it. This conned 3 of them at a time which was rather easy to deal with until I accidentally hit the capital ship I was helping and had to run away because it was hitting me hard.

I think the main thing that bothers me at this time is that it has potential but it feels like they'd have to put a lot of work into it to get there and if so many people are refunding it they may just scrap the whole thing
I'm still on the fence with it, it's relaxing to play because you basically don't do anything, and there are no risks (just as there are no rewards). It IS eating up my game time, time I could be playing and having actual fun with Overwatch / Fallout / Doom / Starbound
I mean I feel like I want to keep it just in case
but I'm worried that they'll shut the servers down and then there will be no game thereEDIT: Apparently there IS offline play but the articles I found seemed a bit sketchy on the details. Some say the only missing features would be the discovery uploads

There's base building and now other players can visit / interact with things you build. You can also leave messages for others via terminals.
Heavily damaged ships now crash on nearby planets and apparently survival mode has been given a few tweaks
Still no multiplayer yet so it's not at Minecraft beta level yet ;-)

Apparently, there's multiple land vehicles. You can have multiple ships which can have specialties, and a freighter ship.

I never did get back into playing it, but I still want to... though last time I tried i wasn't too happy, but probably just because i was using my old save and they made the game a bit harder wrt. enemies attacking you all over space.
Ya I am not all that interested but it is interesting that they are still working on it.
It would have been easy to walk away from failure that's for sure, but they stuck with it
I think it's their baby, and truly believe in it. Sony's failure be damned.
I like it. And I really do want to try it again, I had a decent amount of entertainment from it before, and now it should be even better :D this time I'll try not to skip the big funky orb thing. makes it hard to get back onto "the path" or whatever they call it.
NEXT is now live on all platforms.
I played 6-8+ hours yesterday. Here's some thoughts:
+ I'm liking the portable refinery.
- Not super fond of having to use found navigation data to feed to the portable signal booster in order to find more buildings. but its ok.
+ Theres a module for your ship to support long distance transfers! WIN! it's a bit expensive. Semi early game, since you need a piece of anti-mater to make the thing. So it's not something you'll be able to do right away.
+ If you bought a certain package early, you get a nice ship upgrade immediately (redeem whatchamacallits). Though the only thing that changed was that it came with a intersteller drive with some fuel.
+ The initial tutorial is actually quite good.
- The controls still suck donkey butt.
- Inventory management is also a pain in the rear. Still very limited on storage space.
I'm still enjoying it, though I'm not finding a lot of great stuff yet. I think they scaled the ramp a bit since the original release. So its a bit more gradual? I even checked a couple planets in a couple systems for buildings and signals and it stopped giving me new options, so it was basically completely drained of useful stuff... I remember there used to be a crap load of stuff on your starter planets and near by.
I may be playing a bit more today. If anyone feels like playing together with the multiplayer support, let me know :)
I want to give it another go, maybe at Fraga
I've been playing many hours of it... I really like the changes and the story really pushes you through the tech now.
I'm playing today :D going to chill with getting my base set up properly, and doing some things to optimize my unit earning potential. Chillin really.
If anyone wants to hang let me know :D
New update just hit. And it's pretty awesome.
You can now upgrade and customize your ships. No more having to hunt for the perfect ship, just spend tons of units and probably nanites on expanding storage and it's level. So now if you like a certain design but its not an S class, you can actually just upgrade it! My Lord. I want to keep my special pre-order ship. It's my baby lol. Now I can S class and max storage that sucker!
Also you can have more than one multi tool now! So one can be specialized to mining, one to fighting etc!
The global storage cubes were more than tripled in space.
Can scrap ships for Units!
And other things!
https://www.nomanssky.com/synthesis-update/
I think I'm going to play a bit again soon.
That sounds awesome!

I think they will probably allow more ship customization. This was likely just a step on that path. You can expand your ship's inventory slots, and class.
Inventory management is a lot less annoying than it used to be. This update made it so you can just drag and drop stuff more. Older updates drastically increased the storage of inventory slots. This update drastically increased the number of slots in base storage cubes. You know, those big ass cubes that were near useless before except for the fact that they were all magically linked, so any #1 cube shared the contents of any other #1 cube you make... Which I did NOT know for a very long time.
A previous update added the need for powering things, including the aforementioned storage cubes. It's kindof annoying ESPECIALLY since even once you power them there's a "no power" icon on the cube itself but its actually powered. fun. You need to either use solar panels or bio generators OR use the fancy survey device scanner mod to search for magnetic something-or-other power sources you can place a really cool looking power generator on. That device will also scan for resource (metals, gas, etc) deposits that you can place automated resource gatherers on. I'm not sure if they run out or if it just takes a long time. It can be a challenge to get one of those magnetic power sources near to your base or your resource outposts.. In my last save I had to walk out placing things to expand the size of my base in order to be able to reach the actual power hotspot thing such that the power cables would actually reach.
I've been playing this weekend. Put in probably 4-8 hours in my last save but then after realizing that save doesn't have the cool Horizon Omega pre order bonus ship in it, I used the NMS save editor to hack it in.. but it wasn't quite the same.
So I started a new save last night :D A lot of stuff has changed in the game the past couple years. It's really not the same game anymore. There's lots of quality of life improvements that make it a lot less annoying to play. That said, they've seemingly changed the story a bit ad-hoc and there's some places where things don't quite mesh up in a super smooth polished way right in the beginning. The beginning of the game is a lot less hard though. At least it has been for me. Used to be that any mining would call the Sentinel almost immediately. Now I haven't seen a single one since starting the new save. Perhaps I'm just lucky this time around. They COULD polish up some of the storyline somewhat though.
NMS always had potential. Keep us updated, should you find anything else significant in the changes.
me> Sooo, TL;DR. Getting my $67 worth. GOT my $67 worth. A loooooong time ago.
I've now put in over 80 hours in my new save (some of it was idling, so lets say 50-70 hours of play time) according to the in game timer.
Dang. I've done a fair amount of ACTUAL game play but also a massive BUTT ton of grindy busy work to earn units and especially nanites.
The amount of nanites you need to upgrade ship class is pretty significant. C->B is 10k, B->A is 25k, and A->S is 50k. Doing that the normal/manual game progression way would take AGES.
The nanite sources I know of are off hand:
- inspecting various objects
- uploading discoveries
- completing missions
- a couple NPCs on the space anomaly ask for discovery data as well. it stacks with uploading discoveries
- collecting and smelting larval cores from whispering egg/biological horror nests
- killing sentinels for pugnium
- smelting pugnium
- smelting platinum, gold+silver->platinum
- smelting runaway mould (which you get from this chain: Residual Goop -> Viscous Fluids -> Living Slime -> Runaway Mould) Smelting the first three items takes a long time, so set that up before going to do other stuff, just be warry to save semi often as I think you can loose stuff in smelters in some cases)
There are more ways I just found out about from the wiki like:
- selling upgrade modules to merchants
- scraping ships for upgrade modules and selling them
- trading get relics, korvax casings, and Vy'keen effigies to their respective races
- feeding certain animals after which they lead you to an object that yeilds them
- crashed freighter storage containers
- freighter cargo containers marked exotic
- smelting hexite+faecium
- smelting hadal core (didn't even know what that was)
- smelting salvaged data
To upgrade my preorder bonus ship I've mainly been doing it the grindy way by space station hoping and buying pugnium, platinum, and residual goop, then smelting all that junk.
I think I'm going to try the ship salvage route, and finding any upgrade modules I have stored or in use that I don't want anymore and selling them. (note though, modules you got from the main story missions are "free" and dont count against the max 4 upgrade limit, so if you have the space might as well just keep them, esp because sometimes they have effects that other modules won't) I did collect a bunch of nantites initially from the larval cores but it proved annoying to find and remember where the abandoned buildings were. I've also been mass collecting space station missions, and doing them in batches because many missions of the same time will complete with the same trigger. Its a great way of getting nanites and increasing your rank with the races and guilds.
Another grindy thing I've been doing is buying/selling the tradable goods at space stations to collect credits while buying the other stuff that produces nanites. It generally makes up for what I spend on the nanite materials.
After they added the deep resource deposits and the industrial machinery to collect them, I set up a few mining outposts. particularly for magnatized ferrite, parrafinium, oxygen, and activated emril. I've so far ammased over 4 billion units from selling activated emril. INSANE. At the moment I wait till I have about 300m worth of activated emril before going to sell to not totally drain all the best places to sell it. Once you sell a ton of something to a place, it's buy price drops significantly. Like -70% from ~0%. It does recharge, but takes tens of hours of play time (not real world time, actual play time, even time spent with the game inactive doesn't count. the game has to be active/focused)
I just got my first freighter of this save. it sucks compared to my first ever freighter. that was a lucky break, class A or some such with 40+ slots. it was great. Now I've got so much money I'm just going to bide my time till I find a S class freighter and buy it.
I'm getting close to finishing most of the built in story/missions. But I put that on pause after the ship upgrades hit :D but I think I'll start working on them again while I wait to collect another 40k+ nanites. currently sitting at ~10k.
Oh, another thing I did recently was star system hoping to get the storage slot upgrades from both the space stations (normal station and anomaly). One of the updates added the new anomaly and the anomaly now has a place to buy special upgrade modules AND storage slots. I'm now maxed out on personal storage slots. Oh, one of the upgrades also increased the storage slots in a big way. you have way more of them now and each one stores a lot more basic materials. 9999 basic items per slot. Crafted materials still are only 5-10 items per slot.
So yeah. I've been getting a lot out of the game so far. While I wouldn't say its been super FUN (I have a hard time feeling FUN...) it has kept my attention. Back after the initial release I felt I got my moneys worth from the first 20 hours I played. I figured 20 hours of play time was worth what I spent. Steam claims I've put in over 389 hours of play time. but that most deffinitely counts all idle time, AND some time I think where steam thought the game was running but wasnt.
OH that reminds me.. I've mostly played this save in Linux :D Steam's proton translation layer has been working very well with my new system. I've had a few crashes, but for the most part, its worth it. I don't like rebooting and losing my dekstop session state just to play a game. Also sometimes I like to hop between the game and other things I'm doing. if I had to reboot, I just wouldn't play nearly as much and my progression would be much slower and I'd probably not even want to play as much.
Even though its still not the perfect game or exactly what was advertised its still got a lot to offer. Don't think the things I've been spending time on are the only things to do. Theres so many things I've just been ignoring.
For example:
- New living ships
- Freighter related stuff
- Multiplayer missions
- mega base building
- music blocks
- some of the story from the dude that gets you the land vehicles
- most end game content including getting to the center and other galaxies
- various game modes (inc: permadeath, creative, etc)
- the abyss update content including the underwater mission and exocraft
- vr mode
- things related to quicksilver and cosmetics
- anything "food" related
Next on my list I think are (in no particular order, not including my normal every day grindy stuff):
- try salvaging ships for credits and nanites
- finish upgrading my preorder ship
- finish main story quests (almost there?)
- get better multitool(s) (you can have more than one now and switch between them)
- find awesome S class frieghter
- find awesome living ship
Sooo, TL;DR. Getting my $67 worth. GOT my $67 worth. A loooooong time ago.
And they are just going to keep adding more content and bug fixes.
Might? Have to revisit this game? (a lot of this Tom already covered but the content keeps coming)
I knew it still had updates but this looks awesome! Maybe worth reinstalling

Absolutely!
Dang, I've missed a few updates. I might have to check it out again.
