Title: Awesomenauts
Post by: Mr. Analog on August 17, 2012, 04:40:30 PM
Imagine taking an 80s cartoon a 2D platformer and League of Legends and smushing them all together, you end up with Awesomenauts!

Fun little team vs team game available on Steam / XBox Live and Playstation 3 for less than $10!

http://www.awesomenauts.com/

There are currently 8 different characters/classes to play as, you can upgrade them during the game using pre-selected power ups, but basically it's just a fun team vs team free for all.

The soundtrack is, well, awesome! 80s inspired video game music http://youtu.be/48xz6DNWLr8 not to mention that each character gets their own theme music (I dare you to listen to Froggy G's intro loop and not find yourself humming it later http://youtu.be/P6Wnx6sulVo ).

Anyway, I just started playing the game, I suck but it's fun! Like TF2

Also I made some totally rad fanarts already :D

As a non-gamer, I've heard of this game and it's awesomeness.  I mean, it's right there in the title!

I wish I was playing Awesomenauts, right now, over lunch.

So far my favourite characters are Froggy G and Leon, I unlocked Clunk last night but I really suck at playing tank type characters. I'm more of a hit and run specialist :D

I love how with most characters you are trying to knock out towers, except for Leon that is, you get all excited when one of your towers is under attack because it means you can loop back around behind your foes and stab some back

The game itself is hilarious, all the dialogue fits the theme perfectly, I'm looking forward to unlocking more!

Oh yeah, if you're still scratching your head over this watch the beta review by TotalBiscuit: http://youtu.be/bzhBEPsgQQw

New DLC character today featuring the vocal talents of Simon aka "Honeydew" (of the Yogscast)!

Woo yeah!

Also there are new skins, one of which changes Lonestar into... AXE COP!

Huzzah!

Yeah, I'm out for a couple days myself but I have a real hankering to play some more multi-player stuff (and of course Awesomenauts will factor into this!)

As well ... L4D!! I don't know why I never played this stupid game really all that much before, I like it. Like a lot! The n00b is finally wearing off

You are all now official Awesomenauts!

Mercenaries who want to join the fight! If I missed you it's either:
a) You're not on Steam
b) Not in the RW Steam group

Thx Mr. Analog!!!! Played some today, definitly different on a mouse and keyboard.  Have to try it with my controller next.  Fast pace but not crazy.  Have to see when I can fit it in with xcom out tuesday and Civ 5 (free with xcom pre-order reward system) owning my life lately.

Dammit there are a buch of things locked rift off the bat and only accumulated play plus score unlocks them.

On the plus side practice mode counts but this does limit your attacks and character choices off the start.
Title: Re: Awesomenauts
Post by: Mr. Analog on October 09, 2012, 07:51:33 AM
Thankfully it doesn't take a lot of playing to unlock stuff (and you can do it in practice mode like you say) and all the new characters so far have been free.

For once I actually kind of like it because some of the characters you need to have a bit of experience playing to handle effectively.

Like Yuri, the rocket monkey, is really tough to play as (I find) after playing so much Clunk :D but I've seen people be absolutely devastating with Yuri

Oh and you really can't beat Disco Voltar :D
Title: Re: Awesomenauts
Post by: Lazybones on October 09, 2012, 08:45:19 AM
The only annoying part is being beat up on by abilities and characters you have not unlocked yet.

It is an interesting game, that is for sure.

Yep, that can be frustrating for sure.

The one thing that gets me every time is trying to run back to the safety of a turret and having a creep take me out

Suffice to say a lot of my deaths are "Humiliations" :D

But I get to play the respawn minigame again so whatever hah

Looks interesting, I think we're going to see a rash of steampunk-y type games in the wake of Dishonored...

(which after having seen a let's play of the press copy looks... pretty bad actually).

The game looks okay but the story and character interaction so far appears very weak.

Spoiler
The first thing that happens when you get off the boat is to return to your ruler with news that there is no cure for a plague that is ravaging your country, oh but wait no you have to play a game of hide and seek to learn basic game mechanics. Then when you meet with your ruler you are left alone with her and her daughter, she is killed and the daughter is kidnapped. When the guards find you alone with the dead Empress you are immediately blamed (framed?) but I mean even two seconds of thinking about the situation should make it obvious that you didn't do it (where'd the kid go?)
[close]

Maybe I'm spoiled by Portal/Bioshock 1/etc but to me it felt like a couple things were missing:
1. Introducing game mechanics by teaching you through the narrative
2. Making you part of the narrative without resorting to exposition

I mean they take you off to the side and out of the story to teach you how to do stuff and then they just introduce you to a character to flat out explains everything your character should already know.

Anyway, the footage I saw was for the press version and I'm hoping that these things were just rushed along and not the actual game because yeesh

3.7h of play according to steam, and I have hit lvl 10 so I now have a few characters to choose from and some of the better abilities unlocked.

If you want to grind levels, it seems setting your character to random and playing practice (easier to win matches) seems to be the best way. Well other than getting local co-op going as that also gives you a points / experience bonus.

I haven't settled yet, hell I just unlocked 2 new ones last night I haven't had a chance to play yet.

Leon Chameleon is the only one i DON'T like so far, I just can't seem to get into his play style.

Still trying to find a groove and load-out style for each of the characters I currently have available. I have found the play style changes a lot with loadout for each character.
Title: Re: Awesomenauts
Post by: Mr. Analog on October 10, 2012, 02:58:42 PM
That's very true, I kinda like Leon he's a good hit and run type guy, you can use the disguise / invisibility to get behind guys and backstab, then you can use the tongue to drag guys back into creeps/friends/turrets

It's kinda like using Lonestar to jump in around enemies and use the bull to shove them into turrets :D

I like the hit and run type characters, I think mostly because I force myself to pay more attention to my health bar. Like if I'm playing Froggy G/Leon/Coco I find myself jumping in messing up some junk and fading back (or in Coco's case trying to chase down enemies who are on the run :D ).

I also like teaming up with a good offence guy using Voltar (sort of like Pocket Medic for TF2), being able to drop healing drones in the right place can completely change a battle.

I do like shuffling selected powers as they really do change the play style. One thing is for sure, once you get the piggy bank you'll want it right away (so you can pick both your main powers right off the bat).
Title: Re: Awesomenauts
Post by: Lazybones on October 10, 2012, 03:17:32 PM
Ya the piggy bank and the lump sum health boost for some characters is a big thing.

My main issue with Leon is his speed vs his range... To get close enough to anyone you have to combo it with one of his ablities, thus kind of spreading out your points a lot.

Lonestar on the other hand has really nice DPS, high jumping range and movement speed.. Especially if you focus on increasing his guns speed and damage.
Title: Re: Awesomenauts
Post by: Mr. Analog on October 10, 2012, 03:20:25 PM
Haha, yeah I focused all my boosts into the backstab for Leon. Most sessions I don't even pick the tongue, if there's enough going on sometimes people don't even notice (particularly Clunk players for some reason heh)

Not like I'm a master or anything, I die a lot lol (but it's still fun)

Oh, new character coming soon, Thorin will like her, Raelynn is a red-headed E.L.F (?) sniper

Apparently she has a gun that can change modes from short range rapid fire to long range single-shots and has the ability to create cover (walls)

It will be interesting to see how a long range attacker fits into the mix as so far the only class that could put the long distance hurt on you was Coco and that pesky Ball Lightning that goes through turrets and walls.

Oh there is also a new map coming!!

lol, yeah, I like redheads.

"E.L.F" - Elven Liberation Front?  Freeing themselves from the oppressive dictatorial rule of Santa the Communist?

"E.L.F" - Emo Life Forever?  A bunch of guys and gals pretending to be vampires who then turn into actual vampires but don't realize it until mom forces them to go look for a job during the day and they burst into flames?

"E.L.F" - Eternal Libations Force?  Bartenders with magical beer taps hooked to bottomless kegs in another dimension?

:)

Well by long range I assume that means one screen, Lonestar's bull can already basically cover that and can be upgraded for damage.

Ooh yeah, that's a good combo.

I'm guessing she will be higher DPS maybe. I guess it depends on how the range will work and what the cooldown will be (I assume sniper shot will have a significant cool down).

It could be that the targeting will allow her to view enemies off her current screen (flavor text suggests watching out for the "dot"). If so that will be very very interesting to gameplay

Whoa, finally played my first Quick Match (non-private server), it's challenging if you end up on a team with nothing but bots LOL

But anyway! Absolutely lovin' Raelynn, her style keeps me a bit further out of the action which is good 'cause when things get crazy I barely keep track of my health LOL

A good combo with her seems to be any big heavy hitter type guy (think Clunk or Sk?lldir) and a harasser (like Leon or Coco), she also seems to work good with close fighters as they can go in and distract the enemy team a bit and forget about the 30 damage they're going to take lol

Oh they've nerfed one of Voltar's powers, I dont remember what it was though

Looks fairly balanced to me, not a big reduction in those shots and there are lots of increases and improvements

Voltar
- NEW - Voltar?s ?Summon Drones? ability has been renamed to ?Suicide Drones?. After purchasing the Suicide Drones skill, drones will continue to spawn automatically. Using the Suicide Drones skill now orders your drones to home in on nearby enemies, exploding on contact.
- The damage dealt by Suicide Drone shots has been reduced from 5 to 4, while explosion damage has been increased from 10 to 12.
- Weapon range and homing capabilities of Suicide Drone shots have been improved.
- The damage increase from Weaponised Hull (Suicide Drones) has been increased from 5 to 6.
- The price of Dreams of Greed (Healing wave) has been reduced from 205 Solar to 155 Solar.
- Movement speed slightly reduced

I would say the auto-spawning the drones and increased explode damage makes this change a buff more than anything. I was playing last night and found it much less confusing using the drone suicide power because I didn't have to waste drowns to re-spawn my max number available.  Also with the damage upgrades and suicide Voltar is not completely useless in offensive power, you can really chop down players that forget to boost their health and focus on damage.

Ooh yeah good point!

One thing I didn't like when playing Voltar (which admittedly was not much) was that I kept having to keep track of the number of drones and where they were. I can't tell you how many times I'd hit the respawn and lose 2 when I thought I only had the 1.

It's a good change.

Exactly it takes away the micro management and waste of the power timer to keep the drones at full power. My only beef at the moment is that the suicide attack does not always cause the drones to go toward the correct target, or any target sometimes.

And now the balance nerf, I knew Voltar's improvements where too good to be true.

Patch 1.8.1 (Hotfix)
06-11-2012

Character balance/fixes

Voltar
-Suicide drones, shot range decreased from 14 to 10
-Suicide drones, warpgate overdrive cooldown reduction decreased from -2 sec. to -1 sec.
-Suicide drones, warpgate overdrive price increased from 190 Solar to 250 Solar.

Raelynn
-Snipe shot, cooldown reduced from 10 sec. to 9 sec.
-Snipe shot, charge up time reduced from 0.67 sec. to 0.5sec.
-Snipe shot, damage increased from 30 to 35 damage.
-Snipe shot, flashy glasses, Solar/damage percentage reduced from 15% to 10%
