Live updates from Macworld... buzz is that there will be a huge product launched... Possibly a new ultra mobile Mac or phone
http://www.macrumorslive.com/ better link :) (for up to the second)
Here we go, Apple bashing Microsoft already, I don't recall Microsoft walking down that road at CES.
Apple TV looks a pretty interesting little machine. I wonder what codecs it can play and can it connect to a Vista machine. $299 USD, ships in Feb, taking orders today.
Ding iPhone.. launch the lawsuits....!
Apple would have to be insane not to communicate with Cisco on the name first.
Pretty slick ideas though. iPod, Phone, PDA, massive touchscreen, no stylus.."We have invented a new technology called multi-tuch. It works like magic, you don't need a stylus, far more accurate than any interface ever shipped, it ignores touches, mutli-finger gestures, and BOY have we patented it!"
"iPhone runs OS X!"
It sure doesnt look pretty
Before announced, im going to guess.... $399 USD.
From this image http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/01/dsc_0182.jpg it looks pretty big.
Touch screen dialing sucks BTW.. It better also support voice dialing... Biggest complaint I have for my phone is that it doesn't have a button Keypad.
Interface is killer good looking http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/01/dsc_0184.jpg
As beautiful as this looks though, its a giant expensive touch screen (exposed at this point) just banging around in your pocket. everyone will buy some sort of case for it and at that point it looses a lot I think. A nice convergence device though by the looks of it. OSX is a negative in my book
GSM, smart move. This would be Rogers in Canada

Yep, sucks for those of us on CDMA.. but I don't see any other way they could release such a product. Just find an unlocked one, pop in your SIM and away you go.
Ya, thinner then the Blackjack and Q. I was so close to getting a Blackjack but now I am heavilly on the fence
Im already on Rogers, im hoping for a Hardware Upgrade path
Similar web technology in Safari that Opera is sporting
Apple Stock is up 3% already today.
...4.26%
...4.87%
...4.97%
...5.08%
...5.23%
...5.65%
...6.19%
...6.25%
...6.39%
...well, im done updating this now, crazy.
If this thing works HALF as well as they show it to, it completely shames ANY PDA/SmartPhone on the market...
Accept I don't see anything about corporate PUSH email, just the Yahoo stuff...
Apple put up a quote earlier that said something abotu software makers making there own hardware. This iphone just screams that, they had the software and designed the hardware around it. I will totally agree with you Lazy, this thing is so far ahead of anything else available.
I wanted a next gen iPod though :( 120GB, widescreen touch interface
"A lot of these phones have low battery life. We've managed to get 5 hours of battery of talk time, video, and browsing. 16 hours of audio playback."
That is crazy good considering the size. No HDD helps as it now has no moving parts, but still
$499 - 4GB
$599 - 8GB
...available in June

As of this second they OWN the personal DATA device market on GSM.. No question..
Too bad I am on a contract... This device would be enough to make me switch to GSM.
http://media.macrumorslive.com/p/1168368240-thumb.jpg ... now that...is a bluetooth headset that i like :) probably doesn't sit well but its not like those horrible giant ones people wear all the time now. Do people really get calls every 30 seconds to warrant it?
I don't think i can do $599 on a 2 year contract, thats probably going to be $649 in Canada

There are plenty of non ugly ones on the market, but everyone just gets the $50 MOTO ones the phone store has...
I don't ware mine during the day at work.. Mostly when I am on the move, in the car, and sometimes when I forget it is there..

Is Rogers the only GSM carrier in Canada? I did some quick looking around and it would look like it. So we are going to be stuck with them for the most part. Hopefully Cingular doesnt strangle hold this for to long, ebay is an option.

It's a HELL of a lot cheaper than the first Rasz, for a data device that does JUST WHAT THEY HAVE demoed it is well worth it.

We have three carriers in canada...
Rogers GSM
Telus CDMA
Bell CDMA
ALL other providers in canada are virtual providers that sell handsets working off of these three networks under different branding.
Im not arguing that the price isnt good, i just think its way out of my price range. even the 4GB version.
Well, thats it. Apple changed there name at the end (dropping Computer) and stock is now at 7.27% and climbing rapidly. (make that 8.2%)
RIM stocks dropped nearly 7% on the day (makers of the Blackberry)

and BOY have we patented it!"
That sucks, Its ironic though because drunkener and i were talking this morning about the IPod interface and how we love it, unfortunately well never see it on any other device due to patents. I then suggested maybe other manufactures could get around this by making a touch pad where you can use patterns and gestures to execute commands kind of like in the game Black&white, for example draw a ">" for play or something.
Well then i checked out this thread and behold! Apples new product and a mile long list of interface patens to go with it. There goes innovation out the window again, really i question the usefulness of patens in the digital technology industry.
The whole industry is F****d IMO, everyone musling eachother out with patens and the lawsuits are running ramped.
Whats worse then that Druid is that Apple just set the bar at such a high level that it will take years and years for other companies to even come close. Other smart phones normally run on Palm or Microsoft based OS so its now up to those 2 companies to get there phone OS up to and beyond the Apple point, I'm not so sure thats an easy task if you see what Apple has done.
I will agree though that when you begin patenting things like an interface you really cripple the rest of the world. The click wheel is still in my mind the best interface ever designed for a portable device. You never need to move your finger off that little touch sensitive pad. Things that Creative has done simply do not compare. Now they went and did the same thing for touch screen.
One gaping hole in this presentation was word of corporate email integration. This appears to be a completely personal targeted device, with Yahoo providing the PUSH email support.
Anyone wonder if there is also a PRO version not far behind with an MAC XServer tie in?
Its also pretty hardcore Apple which is a problem if your company is well...Microsoft with Doc/XLS/etc. It is totally targetted at the personal level.
Official iPhone page is up
http://www.apple.com/iphone/
Macs do a rather good job of opening most document types, however for corporate space you would need some form of office on the phone.
Claims to be running Mac OS X.. but I wonder what CPU, how much RAM and what subset of the OS it supports. If you can launch even some of the native OS X apps, it would be amazing.
OSX embedded is my guess. No idea about specs which is sorta disappointing, I was hoping to know the size and resolution of the screen, also how much of the embedded 4/8GB is taken up by OS and Apps would be nice to know. I really look forward to the Arstechnica review on this thing come June.

Screen details where covered in the keynote and are available on the site. http://www.apple.com/iphone/technology/specs.html
Oh :) Ha Ha. Looks good.
I'd still prefer a new iPod as I like my RAZR's size, and much of the time i don't need this type of convergence device. Its getting to the point where we would want 2 cells on the same account.
Wow...the game sure has changed...

:D check out "The first 30 years were just the beginning..." (http://blog.dreamhost.com/2007/01/08/apple-welcomes-us/) (a Mac blogger's silly, over-the-top pre-yesterday predictions)
With many (re:all?) cellphones dropping dramatically in price within a year of being available and many of these phones hitting the $0 mark with a 3 year contract it could be interesting with iPhone as I'm inclined to think that it will NOT drop in price. I cite the iPod as my example. Over the years they have made it smaller, larger capacity, more feature but during all these changes the prices have for the most part stayed pretty stationary.
I am going to be that the iPhone does the same sort of deal. They will release a trimmed version in the form of an iPhone Nano for the low cost market, and they will advance the iPhone with more space, more features, 3G, etc but the price point will probably stay the same (perhaps the uberest finding a home at $499 on 3 years).
whispers of other models have been echoed elsewhere as well.
So I've been experimenting with iTunes this afternoon and I can't import Xvid/DivX files into the library. This basically makes AppleTV rather useless to me (and many others I'm, guessing) unless you are a fan of transcoding everything.

A quick google netted me this.. Not sure if it works.
QuoteIf you install DivX, Xvid, and AC3 QuickTime components, and put your movies in ~/Movies, Front Row will be able to play them without conversion (although I've been having trouble lately with the AC3 codec).
Interesting, though here is the kicker, Quicktime does the playing of said files, i just tried 3 different videos and it causes Quicktime to crash, while WMP and VLC play it without a problem. Codec issue maybe.
