BANG ON THE DRUM

Todd Rundgren

I Don't Want To Work

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day
I Don't Want To Play

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day

Ever since I was a tiny boy
I don't want no candy
I don't need no toy
I took a stick and an old coffee can
I bang on that thing 'til I got
Blisters on my hand because

CHORUS

I Don't Want To Work

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day
I Don't Want To Play

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day

When I get older they think I'm a fool
The teacher told me I should stay after school
She caught me pounding on the desk with my hands
But my licks was so hot
I made the teacher wanna dance
And that's why

CHORUS

I Don't Want To Work

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day
I Don't Want To Play

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day

BREAK

CHORUS
I Don't Want To Work

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day
I Don't Want To Play

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day

Listen to this
Every day when I get home from work
I feel so frustrated
The boss is a jerk
And I get my sticks and go out to the shed
And I pound on that drum like it was the boss's head
Because

CHORUS 4X

I Don't Want To Work

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day
I Don't Want To Play

I Just Want To Bang On The Drum All Day

Currently waiting for a meeting with the boss. I have absolutely nothing else to do right now. just waiting. That said, this isn't out of the ordinary for me.

Last couple of days I've been asked to do work that wasn't on my original list.  Today I'm trying to actually do what was supposed to get done (or at least started) on Wednesday.  And it's kinda interesting work, finally, so I actually want to do it.

Also, four posts in a row with 9Gag images - I know what you're using to wile away the time :)

I was on a break and got sucked in a bit ... but spent a lot of this week reading technical stuff and debugging some Java code that ended up making my brain kinda feel melty by today. So had to find a way to let off some mental steam ;)

Oh ascended one, I must decline your request, for in that respect I am empty, there is a void which will never be filled.

I just read internet summaries of funny/interesting tweets, and sometimes visit the actual Twitter of the tweeters ... but I have no need to have an actual account there...

Then he couldn't claim that Twitter is such a waste of time that he doesn't use it.  So...  You like TweetDeck?  I'm still using a Very Old Phone, but someday I'll switch to a smartphone and TweetDeck's the tweeting app I've heard the most positive things about.  Although when I start using it, I'll have to set an alarm or something so I don't spend three hours in a row just refreshing my feed...

::)

honeybunny, REALLY? I did not deserve that -- I was being INTENTIONALLY flowery in my verbiage, just for the hell of it (the "ASCENDED" icon caught my attention for some reason) I mean come on you gotta have known that (since the sentence immediately following was "normal").

Okay, that wasn't meant as an insult, just a statement that the flowery style reminded me of her writing and that it sent a flash of horror through my brain!  I guess I believed that as soon as I pointed it out, you and others would also get that flash of horror and then laugh at the "good" times back then.  I hope you at least didn't see the pictures they posted on Facebook that eventually got reported as offensive...

Anyway, I'm surprised that statement was taken by you as an insult, and I hope you can see that I was merely pointing out the similarity in writing style for that one sentence and then the flash of horror I experienced due to remembering that writing style of hers.  I did not say nor was I implying that you are or were anything like her, and I wasn't trying to troll you for a negative reaction; in fact, I thought you'd get a rueful chuckle remember the "good" times.  Looking back, given recent posts in that other thread, though, I can understand there's a bit of tension between us and you didn't take it as such, so sorry for that.

And Tom, damn you for posting that video, even if it was 100% on-topic!

I can't believe they number their buildings in the order they built them.  So you need to know where the edges of the block are (not always obvious with buildings up against each other and no street signs!), then you need to know which building was built before/after which other one.

Odd, but do they have a streets that make 90 degree turns thus making intersections of the same street name?

Adjacent towns that have the same street names but are not the same connected street?

They don't have street names.  Let me reiterate, if you're on a street, you have no way of knowing what street that is on the map as there is no street name that you can read from a sign and then find on the map.

Yes, you're describing a confusing system where you look at a street sign and it could be a couple of different streets on the map you're looking on, but imagine looking at the map and it's all lines with no names, and you simply cannot match it up against real life!

I've never heard navigating any city in Canada described as a black art, however: The Black Art of Finding A Japanese Address (http://www.planettokyo.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/detail/navid/16/cid/9/).

Title: Re: FRIDAY!!
Post by: Thorin on September 28, 2012, 10:46:15 AM
It's not my team that calls it a known requirement without writing it down, it's external forces.  When we plan our sprints, we figure out all the tasks required for a story, just like the other teams.  The problem is that we have a person with a vision who wants the software yesterday but doesn't understand (or perhaps doesn't care) that us dev and qa people need more than vague suggestions stated at a meeting to know what the software should actually do.

And the last big piece I developed where the description of what was desired was vague (and not what they actually wanted), I thought I did a good job and then I heard that it was basically garbage and unusable, so understandably I'm a bit more hesistant about developing based on vague suggestions.
Title: Re: FRIDAY!!
Post by: Mr. Analog on September 28, 2012, 10:55:32 AM
So... I'm guessing product owner? Does your team do product owner feedback during sprint reviews?

If so I would say rate them down 'cause clearly the wireframes and/or functional spec documents aren't being done properly or at least reviewed. We went through some crap like that last year and had to have some serious conversations with our PO and the powers that be.

This year most of our problems have been external teams pulling us into their problems. :-/

Oh good, you watched it.  Next it recommended Otep (http://youtu.be/VXRM2PoHGDw), and then Bastille (http://youtu.be/JQnSc0bczg0) after that.  There is no real pattern to these musical selections, I think.

Yeah.  Mixed in with the weird music videos was a Doctor Who Confidential, a Minecraft mod video, and some short thing about a Chihuahua.

hehe

My current list of "Recommended for You" videos:

STARFOX 64 - Game Grumps
Baldur's Gate - Yogscast Sjin
Fallout 3 Ultra Graphic Mods (actually something I might look at)
The Walking Dead: Fallout New Vegas Version (!?)
Minecraft - The Redmurk Mystery Part 1 - Yogscast (god, that takes me back)
Dead Island Riptide - Story Ending

Mostly video gamey, so you know what I watch on YouTube pretty much lol

I've noticed that even 6 months ago the YT "suggested videos" was a great way to actually discover completely new to me related or semi-related videos (and video producers). Now it's much heavier in the "stuff you've already seen", it's kinda disappointing actually.
Title: Re: FRIDAY!!
Post by: Mr. Analog on April 26, 2013, 01:20:35 PM
I think the suggestion algorithm is broke.

Though I guess sometimes I'm not logged in to my account so it can't filter out things I'm subscribed to and just bases "suggestions" I may have already seen on the fact that I'm watching OTHER videos that are tangentially related

Actually even being logged into one account across different devices seems not to be aware that I've already watched some things so it suggests them anyway.

Agreed. It's not even the fact that it's videos I've already viewed, but that it used to mix those in with "hey, that looks cool, I'll check it out!" videos -- those are what seems to have vanished (or is becoming extinct).

Yeah, but what I'm saying is I don't think YouTube actually knows in all situations if you've watched something.

It knows on my home computer what episodes of a series I've watched, but not on my tablet, even though I'm logged into the same account.

I love Mambo No. 8, and I love the film Office Space too ;)

Today was fun. So was yesterday. I have some minor bits to do still, sorta kinda. not that important at this point in time.

But holy @%&#. I had this fancy little image selection widget all coded up for iOS, and well it worked rather decently, except it didn't handle scroll overshoot quite right, and fixing that.. well that took a rewrite! because safari is a pain in the ass. so now instead of using safari's native support for momentum scrolling, I got to reimplement it myself so I get to know when and where the scrolling is going to end. woo. the first version took a day or two to get working right, the "fix" (aka: rewrite) took another day and a bit. not fun.

More fun? that "not important" task is getting it to work with android. turns out android doesn't actually support the touch* events ::) WHY THE @%&# NOT??? god. what a useless browser. mobile browser that sends /mouse/ events in a mobile touch environment. I don't even.

So freaking tired.

I spent the previous two weeks going through a newly inherited project that is TOTALLY BROKEN, and documenting the brokenness. In the end my supervisor's recommendation to the boss(es) was to scrap it and do a simpler, and cleaner version. It wasn't worth working with the existing code, or completely rewriting it from scratch (as a majority of the site features probably aren't used much). So incredibly boring.

Hey Mr. Analog, wanna trade tasks? ;)

This is an in-joke - we were both in the office on Tuesday and I offered to trade work with another person, but Mr. Analog had heard what I was working on and told the other person Do Not Accept!

Two more hours before I go get the trailer, seven more hours before I leave for camping.  And we're going somewhere close, less than an hour away, so I'll probably be drinking beer and chopping wood by nine hours from now.  THIS IS NOT A DANGEROUS COMBINATION IN MY OPINION.  You can call me Lefty if I end up being wrong on that opinion :)

I can't believe how much camping we have planned this year.  We managed to find a spot for this weekend, then again for next weekend, then all of the second week in July, then all of the second week in August, and then probably a couple more weekends at the end of August / middle of September.  Probably $1,200 just in camping fees!  But at least we're using this new trailer, better than letting it sit doing nothing.

Tom, that is awesome!  It's taking a long time to de-clutter and clean because it took a long time to clutter up.  Hopefully once you get it all tidied up you'll set yourself a daily reminder to do a five-minute tidy and a weekly reminder to do a thirty-minute clean, and then you'll have this awesome living space that you'll be proud of.

We do the big cleans, but no one does the daily tidies, which with six people and two dogs means the big cleans are a lot of work.

Yeah, totally.

It's just a matter of keeping on top of it, even just a little. Though I have these mood swings that make me not want to do jack squat, and not give a fsck. So once in a while I get a little behind, then it snowballs. :( But in the end, I may just hire a cleaning service to come in a few times a month and get the stuff I /never/ do. floors, walls, dust, etc. And I'll have more reason to keep the majority of it clean.

But yeah. Last weekend, I managed to work on my LuaGlue project a bunch, then I cleaned out my storage room, which made room for the rest of the clutter thats on my livingroom floor right now (old family photos, some books, and my hobby electronics tools and parts), I also put up some peg board to hang tools and stuff in there. common stuff that I need often but hate going out to the shed or digging around in a box for.

Yeah, it feels good.

I think cleaning out your storage room so you could use it for easily-accessible storage was a great idea :)  If you need a truck to take garbage to the dump or anything like that, let me know.  Same goes for you, Mr. A - if you need help hauling stuff to the eco center one of these days, just ask.  I have no sports taking up my evenings...

My main problem with all this old gear is I know most of it works but I'm never gonna use it. I have a hard time letting go of old crap, but it needs to go.

I'll get all the drives out this weekend and maybe we can set a date to haul all this jazz off to the Eco Centre
Title: Re: FRIDAY!!
Post by: Tom on June 20, 2014, 10:40:28 AM
Hehe. I do have an old freezer and dresser, and shelving unit that could use a haul-out.

I got rid of /most/ of the junk and clutter last christmas. right now its just a relatively small disorganized pile of random stuff. It /looks/ huge. but it is not even remotely close to the size it was before christmas, and that wasn't even close to the size it was a couple years before that. OMG.

Interestingly, I've had this plan in mind for the back room for a while. I'd gotten two big shelving units months ago, and managed to assemble them. Then I sorted a bunch of stuff on one shelf, and the larger second one wasn't so fortunate. A lot of the stuff that went on it, wasn't organized in any real meaningful way. I've taken some of it to the shed, some of it is hanging on a wall, and more is organized on the shelves better (in bins, related to type of task, like painting, plumbing, or tiles, etc). But yeah, had to find space to put the family pictures, some renovation books, tools, and my EE stuff.

A section of that room will house my networking gear too. It's sortof just stuck in a corner atm, but I want to either make room on one of the shelves, or put in a smaller setup for that. (2-3 servers, big switch, modem, 3+ UPSs...)

I know exactly how that is. But I just got so fed up with the clutter. I'm done with it. I've given away and thrown out so much working, potentially useful stuff now that the old me would cringe very hard. But its just not worth it. I have one box of random computer junk that I tried to kijiji for like 40$ and noone wanted so whatever, I think it's good to junk now... Unless anyone wants a AM2 board with a Phenom I 9550? I'm not sure if the board works, I didn't bother to figure out what part of the machine was broken when it stopped working. Also have a couple IDE DVDRW drives, a floppy drive, old shaw modem, some OTA Analog mpeg capture cards, and some other stuff i can't recall off the top of my head.

Speaking of BROKEN (but "important") ...

Your guys' "fun" is (arguably) better than trying to trouble-shoot a failing completely-"automatic" 22-step installation* of an Oracle product which fell in your lap in order to evaluate the damn thing.

* unsupported, natch, since it only exists for evaluation purposes -- other than looking through bash shell scripts and decompiling Java classes I'm completely on my own (the Oracle forum "community" has been ... less than helpful. Heck, I would take "welcoming", didn't even really get that.  :P ) ... but on the bright side, at least I'm kinda learning GNU/Linux (see, I even made an effort to call it by its Proper Name, thanks Mr. Stallman!) Although much the time, I feelz THIS...

Lazy - feel better soon!  And yes, it's hard to delegate because others might mess it up

Mr. A - you do it because you care about what you're working on.  Beats only caring about beer at lunch.

Tom - good to see your plan coming together, and maybe you and Mr. A can coordinate on when you want your old electronics sent off to the eco station and I could do it in one trip.  Maybe we need to start a separate thread for that.

Also managed to get our new security handshake process working

All that's left are the service layers and unit tests which I'll pick up tomorrow

Now I'm upgrading Office, the installer treats people like babies, it's extremely condescending.

I try to avoid lettering users have any say in the install process... Most are babies and click through everything without reading...

I will say this, it was pretty well guided, then again I just did the "recommended" install which doesn't give you options.

So far the only app I'm worried about is Lync, most people I know who upgraded had a lot of problems with the UI... so I can hardly wait (ech!)

also I'm grumpy and it was just uber grating to hear a voiceover telling me where the save button was (again) :)

Friday Funnies...

Okay so it is Tuesday -- not even "mini-Friday" as Garner Andrews would say along with a one-finger salute -- but I find this matches the spirit of much of this thread.

A welcome relief to the seriousness of the workweek, here it is...

http://iwastesomuchtime.com/on/?i=102585#How+whacked+your+PERIPHERAL+VISION+really+is (how caricature artists see the world, maybe?)

OUCH. My eyes, my brain, they are actually working as intended? YEESH.

my vote for WEIRDEST/MOSTEXTREME distortion? David Duchovny.

Pro-Tip: Don't blink. Blink and you're gonna miss the full effect. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. Good Luck.

And if the above doesn't quite work for you (since you might need to get too close to the screen or something) this video is fun also. And, MATH!

So what is the story? Someone post a photoshop? Open a bad email? Browser based word replacement plugin? Did they actually get exploited?

hehehe nope just me being bored and using the good ol' "Inspect Element" and some stream-of-consciousness with no internal mental filter.

Was in a weird mood.

In response to an annoying popup spam webpage that had visible-obvious fakery in some online banking, I decided to show myself how fake webpage content SHOULD be done :)

bonus points: count/list the specific "improvements" I made vs. the original...  ;D ;D ;D

With a disclaimer that I absolutely love cats, gotta ask, does this ever stop being funny?

You can almost imagine cartoon thought bubbles over the other 2 cats, like they were 3 teens about to do something bad, and one suddenly got caught and they literally "high tail it outta there", all like "dude, you're on your own!"

Cats are so graceful and cute. I almost miss having them in my home (the lack of hair-getting-every-@%&#ing-where confirms the "ALMOST" part)

My kids used to slide down the stairs on an old mattress that just fit perfectly.  It had a landing with a wall at the end, kind like this one, although there was a little more space.  But then the wall was solid concrete, as it's the basement outer wall...

What I really need is better support settings. The support ended up ripping off the back of parts of the model lol. Side in the pic looks ok, but sheesh, backside looks as bad as my backside. HAHA MADE YOU THINK ABOUT MY BUTT.

Now it is friday. woo. Got a kiddo appointment today, then groceries, then work probably? Then hobby. Might be live streaming some tinkering this weekend :D TinkerTom on youtubes, and TinkerTomMakes on twitch. Like, Comment, Subscribe, hit bell icon! kekekeke.

Really nice find! BRILLIANT!

I've always had a child-like fantasy dream of doing what this guy ACTUALLY DID! So now I don't have it as a dream anymore -- "I woke up and I'm covered in ants!" (and he's lucky nothing worse crawled out of that rotting wood in the uncovered car he rode before the rainstorm!)

Still, can't stop watching...  8) 8)

"The Room" ... as a Prince song.

Disaster Artist looks to be a very divided film at least from the reviews I've seen, it makes me want to read the book now!

Also it got me to re-watch Ed Wood, what a classic movie. I forgot how goddamn intense Martin Landau was as Bela Lugosi.
