Title: new player: Aethun
Post by: Thorin on June 30, 2012, 03:42:21 PM
Spent the morning hanging out with a guy from Sweden, named Aethun.  Gave him some stuff to help him get started, showed him around a bit on the server (Mr. A, nice 3x3 door!  I finally went and looked at it!), showed him where the railroads are, and I think I convinced him to set up shop down south somewhere.  He said he's gonna use Frontier Hotel as a base of operations until he's got his own place :)

So now we have Canadians, Australians, and Swedes (that I know of, I wonder if there are any other countries represented?)

German/Austirans, Americans,  though I'm not sure how often allefant and sevalecan get on the main server anymore.

So whose friend is Aethun? :)  Since everyone on this server seems to be either related or friends of existing players...

Hello!

I'm from the allegro forums, where I go under arvidsson.

I intend to build a medieval inn at around (-31,1650), unless the land is claimed by someone already. The plan is to later on expand into a smaller medieval village with a blacksmith, windmill, watchtower, etc. I have been looking around for interesting designs, but I haven't exactly found what I'm looking for, so I'm experimenting a lot in single-player creative mode to get a realistic, cozy feeling to the inn. Hopefully it will become a great little vacation spot for when you all are tired of building stuff :)

Welcome!

Do you mean this area: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-31/64/1650/-2/0/0 ? If so I don't think anyone is building there, can't wait to see what you come up with.

Yes, that's the spot! I've started clearing out the area from trees, and found a huge chasm underground. The overhang and surrounding hills could make for some interesting locations for buildings. I if get going long enough I will expand the village to cover a lot of the area south of the river. Thankfully, I won't be creating gigantic structures.

Any ideas for a nice medieval village name? Or, maybe I should complete the inn first, but it will require a name too :)

That is a fantastic spot!

I'll leave the naming to you of course :) but a cool Minecraft-y name is always required for an inn: The Hissing Creeper or something :D

That's not bad.

The wandering zombie?

The thiefing enderman?

The annoying pig?

:D

Welcome!

The closest neighbours to where you plan to build would be DerekVPierce (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/-139/64/1068/-1/0/0) and iLLian1of7 (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/1038/64/2136/-2/0/0), neither of which are anywhere close to you.  There's a portal near there that someone made long ago, and a tiny little farm field that I built to get wheat to lure cows back to my place (took forever!).

I like The Wandering Pig for an inn name.  Medieval village names?  There's all kinds of choices for that...  Aeversham?

Yeah that portal there was mine... was going to build up a new location there... but then I found my West of Spawn location and started building there instead.

Don't know how often you check here, Aethun, but that new player LadyLeenie didn't know about the Overviewer so didn't see that she was building right next to your southern location (http://mc.tomasu.org/#/107/64/1615/-1/0/0).  I told her and YellowBear to not cross the river, but instead build northwards.  They're also planning a village :)

Okay, that's no problem. And here I thought I would be pretty isolated :) One of them gave me quite a scare when I was building, showed up from nowhere heh.

Anywho, the inn is coming along nicely. The basic structure is done, just need to furnish and build the roofs. For the latter I need a whole lot of clay, but I can't seem to find any nearby.

Ocean floor is a rather good place. Lakes are good too, and swamps I think are the best.

Swamps are pretty good, actually I think I have a couple stacks of bricks if you want them.

I can leave them in one of the community chests near Spawn

Yeah, LadyLeenie didn't realize you were just around the bend (of the river) until after they'd built their bridge already.

For clay, you can talk to LennyLen.  He had a whole bunch that he was going to give to me that I haven't got around to yet.  I'm sure he wouldn't mind giving 'em to you instead.  I'm not in need of clay and bricks at present anyway.

If you're going digging for clay, LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES AT HOME.  Seriously.  I drowned digging for clay in three blocks of water, then later in two blocks of water!  When you're drowning, you get knocked downwards every time you lose a bubble.  If you don't have any upward momentum before you start getting this knock-down, you will not build up any upward momentum.  So in 10 seconds (10 hearts) you will not be able to jump up onto a single block.  So the rule is always start moving up before your bubbles run out so that you have upward momentum or be ready to plant a door / torch / fence / something to provide an air pocket underwater.

A stack and a half dropped off at the "free stuff" house near spawn:

For some reason I have problems entering that house. I open the door, walk in and then keep getting "teleported" to the entrance. I couldn't open the chests on the top of the house either. Any idea why this is?

edit: I manage to get in by jumping furiously. But I still cannot open any chests. Maybe you can place the stacks in your house?

The problem is that the community chests are too close to the spawn point, so nobody without Operator status can open them.

Sure I can put that in the house, np

Well that explains why stuff in there wasn't removed from there :P  Maybe we'll have to move the free stuff house?  Any idea how far away we'd have to move it?

Probably not very far as I can access the chests in Mr. A's house.

Okay, lots of bricks in the basement of my house near spawn.

There is a chest on top of some furnaces, it should be in there.

Cheers!

If I can figure out how to move spawn, I can move it to a place thats near the current spawn, but not overlaping with anything important.

Isn't there a /spawn command?

Or is that a mod?

Thanks a ton for the bricks! Was enough for one and a half roof, so I'll go clay-hunting soon. Finished up a lighthouse on the south point of the island, not entirely happy with the design (I copied a lot) but at least I managed to not burn it down.

If you move the spawn let's build a cool safe zone for it.

Let me know where to put it. mcedit seems a tad broken. I might have to edit with something else, probably nbtedit or something.

I'm glad to announce that The Wandering Pig is now open for business!

Only a days journey south of the Frontier Hotel, this little inn provides shelter and food for the traveling adventurer. Three rooms are available, where one is a little bit more exquisite for the gentleman with the more expensive taste. If you come by horse, there is room for it in the barn where it can mingle with other farm animals. If you come by boat, look for the lighthouse on the southern tip and head inland for a short walk. The toilet is at the back.

I look forward to your visit! :)

Nice, I saw it on the overviewer and will have to check it out in-game when I have some time (or am lost).
