no, thread title != "keep an eye on the company formerly run by Steve Jobs". It's "an Apple watch product -- coming soon, apparently".

...the latest rumored product to come out of Apple is perplexing, to say the least. It's been called the iWatch, although that's not the official name that'll probably be attached to it. But in a nutshell, it's a watch, albeit one that's rumored to come with a video function, among other things.

Apple seems to think that there's a market for a new-age watch like the iWatch, one that'll offer a throng of features you normally wouldn't find in a standard timepiece. More than just being a fashionable accessory, the advent of health monitors, sensors, and whatever entertainment option you can fit on these watches could pave the way for a new revenue-making product for the company.

After all, watches aren't that expensive, it has a shorter replacement cycle than, say a television, and the timepiece business is thriving these days. So why not jump on the bandwagon, right?

Bloomberg is even reporting that the device could be introduced as early as this year

I am still waiting for my Pebble kickstarter to arrive... Probably $$$ cheaper than a possible Apple iWatch...

Should be interesting however we have had an TRUE Apple TV rumored for how long, the watch may be vapor for years.

Mr. Analog

If there's one company that can convince people to buy stupid stuff at high prices it's Apple, then again with Jobs gone who knows, any product they sell that is short of a supercomputer in your pocket will seem less interesting.

Unless this is some kind of stealth way into wearable computers that just happens to come with a glasses/hud thing

(Google Glasses vs Apple Watch?)

Camcorder vs a Smartphone / iPod like device?

I still see no reason for Google Glasses in its current state. It needs more HUD ability... All they keep showing is features that compete with a GoPro camcorder... IE first person video recording.. I only recently heard mention of the MAP hud which actually might have a use.

Mr. Analog

I agree, wearable computers seems like nonsense, particularly in their current state, then again a decade ago I thought the same thing about tablets.

I expect these devices to be experimental limited runs that may catch on with a few people but will show Apple/Google what kind of usage to expect from real consumers.

Then again maybe the CEOs went to a lead paint chip tasting party and this is all some mad dream

I think y'all need to read the latest Shadowrun source books.  This idea of wearable computers and personal networks are extensively covered in Shadowrun, as well as the whole Augmented Reality concept that Google Glasses present.

What I'm waiting for is the level of magic energy to return, although with my luck I'd get goblinized into a Troll.

Hmm, some of you might not know what I'm talking about, so: http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Personal_Area_Network and http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Goblinization.
Prayin' for a 20!

gcc thorin.c -pedantic -o Thorin
compile successful

Mr. Analog

To me it seems like "VR" one of those things that always seems to be just over the horizon...

I am all for wearable computing... I have had a PDA or SMART phone for a LONG time, however when I purchase them it was always because the tech had reached a point to meet a need.

Google Glass in its current form does not do that... It is in need of a REAL app like http://www.wikitude.com/ or http://www.layersforiphone.com/ .

A Smart watch would ether need to replace my smartphone feature wise at a smaller form factor but similar price OR need to augment my smart phone at a reasonable price (Pebble).

The prime reason I went with pebble is because they announced it would be water proof. I am often in some form of on call state and often spend time at Pools with my kids... Being able to leave my phone on the bench and receive my notifications in the water is actual a really attractive feature to me vs checking my phone every X min for messages. Also on cold or wet days not having to pull my phone out to check why it vibrated should also be nice...l we will see.

Mr. Analog

I agree with you there on many points.

Also the pebble just seems cool, and there's a lot to be said about that.

also you gotta wait for the Internet Crash -- still 16 years to wait, according to http://shadowrun.wikia.com/wiki/Wireless_Matrix

Well some time has passed, and Google Glass drone ships are really spreading out around the Earthosphere, to the point where the mothership is providing a "DOs and DON'Ts" webpage i.e. "Don't Be A Glasshole" guidelines
