...not just the obvious Warp To Level 8. Nope, this "exit" trick, which, I gotta say, WOW...

(watch the whole video if you have the time, it clarifies the reason for the significance of the 4:25 point that I marked.)
It's amazing how some of these tricks have only been found in the last 10 years or so and have become essential to speed runs, you'd think a game like SMB would have been completely ripped apart by now.
Watching TASBot runs are wild these days
Some of us nerds will really appreciate THIS complete breakdown of the full speedrun... under 5 minutes, folks. O_O

Seems a TON of the "how the hell did he not die?" moments are based on to-the-pixel exploitation of the ACTUAL hit boxes:

Welcome to the fascinating world of speed running, might I recommend the VODs of every GamesDoneQuick ever :D (they're quite addicting to watch)
See you at AGDQ2019!
This is also where you find out that there are bug fixes etc and minor differences between releases and special editions etc.
There are like 3 distinct versions of Mario 64 if I recall between Japan, International and special editions.
I don't have the time to watch full speedruns usually, but I really like these 20-minute explanation / analysis / MATHS videos.
Like... here's one for Mario 64*which is surprisingly fascinating/engaging... especially considering I have never played that exact game.
Plus, it involves *Parallel Universes*.

...omg my brain, wtf? I actually understand what he is saying here (that's how clear the earlier explanations are) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpk2tdsPh0A#t=15m31s
*found independently during early lunchtime; I posted it here not knowing you had mentioned Mario 64 (!)
Half button press was a huge meme last year
