Dude! If you edit a post, no one gets notified!  You can however, being a Mod of the forums, reply to locked topics.  I waaaaahhhhhhted to play at lunch damnit :(
Title: Re: Server Status

Best bet is to edit the first post, and reply with the status change.

1. keeps the current state at the top
2. notifies those subscribed that there was a change.

Agreed!
Title: Re: Server Status

I'm just used to forums where there's a "Send to top", and double posting is discouraged.

Back up for now. Having problems with the sas card still, but it gets further than it used to. I'll have to take it back down again sometime this week to work on it some more (likely).

Made a minor change to the wrapper script. See if you guys can figure out what it is. ;)

Since noone is on right now, I figure its a good time as any to bring it down again. I also updated the wrapper script again. The change this time is pretty obvious though. It should be back in a couple hours at worst. (I hope)

edit: Back up.

And we're back!
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]

I hereby request an extended maintenance window whereby the server can be taken offline for an few hours. If I had another machine with a spare PCIE slot this wouldn't be necessary, but eh, what can you do. It's not overly important, I just need to find a time to do it when you don't all want to play.

Getting a lot of lag at the moment?

Something up?

Lagging again...
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Tom on April 15, 2012, 06:00:21 PM
I really have no explanation for it :( No idea what's causing it. The earlier one could have been my weekly backups, but the last one? No idea.
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Mr. Analog on April 15, 2012, 06:17:15 PM
It gets really bad for a little while then settles down. I've only noticed it today.

Server Down! Going to finally try and get my storage sorted. Should be back up soon.

And we're back :)

Didn't get what I wanted done. And managed to brick one of my SAS cards. So Woot.

What can you do. Apparently desktop/consumer boards have "incomplete" PCIE implementations and/or ROMs that are too small and/or full. That and the LSI firmware likes to stomp on memory.

I'm building a new server box as we speak. The next downtime will likely be when I swap the server over.

Server is particularly laggy today, not sure what but even pressure plates + gates are lagging. At first I thought it was my connection but that seems fine.

It might have something to do with LennyLen's mob/xp farm. Not sure. Actually it was fine earlier, but now the MC server is /pegged/. using up 100% cpu on one core. She might need a kick in the pants.

Heyoh folks. The parts for the server I ordered /should/ arrive tomorrow. It's unlikely I'll work on it tomorrow, but I would like to do it this weekend. Maybe Saturday morning. Let me know if you guys really have to play, and I can pick another day.

If you're refering to that incident at the lan party back in the day at your house by claireview, that was cat fur stuck in the ram slot :( caused a short and melted things.

But yeah, I'm going to keep myself grounded. don't want to kill $600 worth of new hardware.

Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Tom on June 02, 2012, 03:14:04 PM
And we're up! Thanks for your patience everyone!

Everything works like a charm. My RAID array is back up, the system is so far stable as a rock, and things are pretty speedy.

append: In case anyone has issues reaching the server via the tomasu.org host name, use: 174.3.77.93 temporarily. I updated the DNS, but it may be cached by your OS and/or ISP for a while. Shaw's DHCP addresses time out after about 20 minutes, always end up getting a new ip every time I'm down for more than 20 minutes.

Please check to see if your stuff is ok. The tekkit server has been hit pretty hard by griefers. I'm hoping the main server hasn't at all. But I have backups for both, so it should be ok.

Going to be working on the server a bit this morning. It's up right now, but may go offline once or twice for short periods.

Actually I suggest you don't play at all till I'm done. It seems the map got reset back a day or two yesterday, so anything that happens today may go the way of the dodo.

Sorry bout the downtime today. My 'core network switch' decided to barf all over itself and every other device attached to it. Quick reset fixed it. I hope it doesn't happen again, but one can never tell.

Hey guys, I'm messing about with my firewall tonight/this-morning. I figured early in the morning was the best time, as you guys were less likely to want to play ;D I shouldn't be more than a couple/few hours, depending on how things go. (I botched my current install somehow, it can't see the second HT thread, and some odd performance issues.. I dunno. at any rate its a x86_64 capable processor and I installed with i386, reinstalling may help with my issues).

Seems I'm having DNS issues. My DNS provider seems to be down. In case anyone is having issues, try 174.3.68.209.

Mind you this means the map is probably going to be unreachable till its fixed.
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Tom on December 15, 2012, 07:36:35 PM
DNS all fixed, but I had to swap DNS providers and stuff. So it may take a while for it to update for people. In the meantime, use the ip I put in my last post, and in the OP.

When I say "GOOD" I mean will run at near full rated capacity... Past that they might still work bet degrade at various rates.

That /might/ have been my backups. I can't remember if that's the weekend I decided to upload all 11GB of my "important" files (none of it is actually pr0n) up to a remote server. Since it was via SSH it had priority over virtually everything unfortunately.

If I can figure out a way to switch ssh/scp transfers into a different TC bucket I will, but I still want plain ssh to be high up in the chain.

If you where on windows I could tell you how to setup very specific QoS tagging or throttling rules on the machine doing the transfer.

Well, It's probably a similar idea... but I don't want to actually limit the entire machine's ssh, just the bits doing the file transferring. But hmm. I know I can tag based on those TCP tc flags, but I'm not sure how fancy I can get with that... and if I can get ssh to only tag bulk data with 'maximize-throughput' (or one of the newer flags)... Hrm.

I fiddled with my firewall a bit today, tweaked a couple things. latency should be better I hope. getting like 10-20ms to google from 40+. had tcp-acks in the wrong bucket and I enabled a fancy tcp low latency kernel option.

:(

I've fixed everything I could think of that might be wrong on my end now. I at one point had a fancy dual dns setup where one replicated changes to the other automatically. but I think that was being a bit finicky. So now it just rsync's the domain files and restarts bind on the slave. Also, there was a typo or two in the tomasu.org domain db, which have been fixed. I also made sure the ns servers were properly set up at namecheap (they might not have been). At the same time I also broke the dns for my fjellstrom.ca domain cause apparently the .ca root and .com root specify ns servers differently.... which is dumb. I did a "select all domains, set name servers" action, and that borked my .ca's :(

Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Tom on June 07, 2014, 09:55:10 AM
Google's dns was just too slow for me. the latency from here for a long time was like 80ms+. it really does feel like it slows down the internet when pages these days have TONS of scripts, images and css all loading from many different domains.

I set up a local recursive bind dns server which has 1ms or less latency (usually half a ms or less), and @%&# be fast yo. (except sometimes on initial lookups, since i have my cache set to expire pretty quickly, and some full recursive lookups can take a while).

mc.tomasu.org is an alias for mc.svc.tomasu.net.
mc.svc.tomasu.net has address 192.241.149.34
moose@balsa:~/projects/LuaGlue/build/tools/Hoof$ host mc2.tomasu.org
mc2.tomasu.org is an alias for mc2.svc.tomasu.net.
mc2.svc.tomasu.net has address 107.170.226.228

I've seen my vms in some Datacenters be unavailable for 30min or longer... most of the time its at most 5-15 minutes.. but I'm less than thrilled at Digital Ocean's uptime at one or two of the dcs I have my vms at.

Yeah. I need to run some tools on the old map, to get it ready for the newer versions. And I think upgrade to a certain version before the latest, so it runs some special code on it... In order not to break special mobs.

I have bad news, I have worse news, and I have freaking terrible news.

The bad news, my NAS dropped two drives. I can /probably/ rescue that array. Worse news is that I had thought I had a full copy of that array on my server, turns out no, I wiped that array before frag when mucking about with servers, and never copied it back over (and re-enabled the rsync cron job to keep it up to date), also one of the arrays in my server is marked 'auto read-only' meaning some kind of write or read error happened, but it wasn't enough to boot a disk, and the other array is marked degraded and punted a disk... So I've turned them both off as I don't have time to deal with this right now.

That means, there will be no overviewer till probably long after I get back, and no hourly backups. Freaking terrible I know. And I'm sorry.

Silver lining, minecraft isn't hosted here anymore.

So a dude on reddit posted a blog about his hacked up teleport network (and other server !commands). He wrapped the server in a non blocking wrapper... It gave me a good idea, I can extend my rcon tool to run as a daemon and check for !commands, and do various things like support !home, !back, !toggledownfall, !setday  etc. :D

I'll look into it later (probably after I get home, have some more important things to do atm)

Commandblocks can do some interesting things. but might not be flexible enough. but rcon can run any admin command. even for non admin users.

Not sure they can listen for specific text, though maybe they can... I dunno. But this extended rcon tool could just sit there, listen for commands, and do what it needs, no real moding needed.

That tool is what I use to tell the server to turn auto save on, and off for doing the map backups. "save-off; save-all; rsync; save-on" is basically how my backups work (the save commands are all done via the rcon utility I wrote).

The nice thing is, I think rcon can run even the fancy command block commands, as they are really just "cli/chat" commands to begin with. also non admin users can't always use command blocks that use admin commands.

Due to low/no activity on the old usamot map, i have shut it down and backed up the map data. If anyone wants it let me know. It's still stuck on 1.6.2, and will need some tools run on it to let it upgrade properly to 1.7+.

If there's demand for it, I can put it back up on my home server, but i can't afford to run the hosted box any longer if noone is using it.

Some things wrt overviewer have changed. Old ov links to usamot will not work. and somehow the awesome little mini-map i was generating for the index page is completely broken for now.

DNS has been updated for mc.tomasu.org and ov.mc.tomasu.org to point to mc2.tomasu.org.

IP Address change: 68.149.56.140

Swapped out my modem finally. Things actually seem to be better so far. lower latency, haven't seen the weird infinite spinning progress on pages so far. Sadly this modem doesn't have a bridge mode, but it does have a IP Passthrough mode which is ALMOST the same, except It's essentially a raw SNAT passthrough and keeps the modem's MAC, not the device behind it's MAC, so the DHCP reservation changed. :(

Ah well. Let me know if there are any problems. Might mess with my network more later. Just a heads up.

I did update the DNS, but the DNS settings may take a while to be updated across teh interweb cache's. It'll eventually make it to everyone.

Is the server address info up to date in the OP?
The DNS names should all work. the IP in the OP was wrong though. updated it.

According to YouGetSignal  (https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/)
"Port 25565 is closed on 174.3.107.104"

Are you configured to use a different port?

Back to my own little world for now then.

edit:

I don't remember approving leave for anyone... not that being out of town is an acceptable excuse. I'm out of town right now and I'm not letting that get in the way of Minecraft.  That's what holidays are for isn't it?  Now I'm just going to have to spend more time relaxing down at the beach.

I'd like to appologize for that. My big opteron server box is a tad unstable. Most likely due to the actually broken cpu that is in it. Bought it used, with a crack in the pcb, and an entire memory channel is dead. So I bet something else is wrong. Used Opteron 6xxx chips are getting real cheap though, soon I might be able to afford a replacement. 16 core 6380s are like $120cad with shipping now.

Hey Tom, Mr. Analog and I will split the cost of a new chip for your server. We've been using your server for our minecraft fix for years, it's only fair we help pay for it a bit.

Figure out the chip you need and how much the total is with shipping, let us know and we'll send you the money. I can easily do $60ish to $70ish and so can Mr. A, so even if it's a little higher than $120 do it anyways.

You get a stable server with a fully-functioning CPU, we get a few more years of Planet Bob :)

Ebay has some Opteron G34 6380's for $100~ including shipping, they take a good week or two to arrive tho. I wish I had one a bit sooner, its been locking up partially due to running some demanding stuff for work :( that and systemd seems to like causing a CPU HARD LOCKUP every time it attempts to restart/reload itself. which really bugs me. HOW EVEN. I posted a WTB ad to kijiji like 3 minutes ago before I saw this post. heh. Hopefully get something a bit quicker and cheaper? Most of the ebay results from the US are sent via the Global Shipping Program which is dog slow, or like charge $30+ for shipping.

There are cheaper chips, but mostly from china (where I got both of mine from) and quality is suspect. I've heard tell that a lot of the cheap server hw on ebay from china is salvage from garbage/recylce shipments. And it shows. ugh.

Well if it's $100 for the chip and $40 for two-day shipping, that's within the range of what we're happy to pay for. So you don't need to spend too long looking for the absolute best deal...

None of the options seem to provide that kind of speedy shipping. all like 7-14+ days if from the us. many are using the ebay global shipping program which is notoriously slow.

Take your time.

1. Make sure it is room temp
2. don't bend the pins
3. make sure the thermal compound is good.
4. Don't put the heatsink on backwards (also be sure all packing film is removed)..

Probably all standard stuff but SO often an issue when you rush.. Especially #4.

Heh, yeah. I tend to rush things sometimes. I won't be rushing a cpu swap on the server I spent at least $3k and many hours on (I built it from parts, so it took some time and logistics to get put together).  :D

I've been wanting to get in there and clean the thing out. It's been a while. Two giant heatsinks on a giant (sorta E-ATX, actually slightly different) motherboard. Replacing it with anything that comes close to its core/ram count would be a bit pricey. I'd prefer not to go back to the old xeon based box. :(

Turns out compile jobs and vm REALLY like cores. lots of cores. :D This box has 32 (bulldozer) cores and currently has 112GB ram due to a dead ram channel, but I do have a full 128GB I can slap in there.
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Tom on September 13, 2018, 04:44:15 PM
Got the cpu! Woo. Now I'll let it warm up. I was a little scared, it's LGA (vs PGA), meaning pins in the mobo and pads on the cpu.. and I couldn't remember what the server currently has so I had to quicky google to see if all of the Socket G34 processors were LGA. (Should be, it'd be weird for two different socket styles to have the same name, esp in the same family of CPUs)

It was packaged pretty crappy. Hope its fine...

Yup. I've done both :)

That said, its MUCH easier to bend pins on the motherboard, and its next to impossible to fix them in some cases.
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Tom on September 14, 2018, 04:10:16 PM
Managed to drop one of the heatsinks and bent a bunch of fins. yay.

But everything is all working. all 128GB ram is available now, and things should be more stable! woo. The newer cpu also has a lower TDP should heat shouldn't be as big a problem.

Oh, and hey, I tweaked the cache for the virtualmachine raid, and it should be /a lot/ faster. Minecraft might actually notice if a lot of chunks are being loaded/saved at the same time.

Hmm, actually, I only saw one or two warnings from minecraft about lag, and one was before I was doing a big build I think? Not sure.. hrm. at any rate, I'll turn tweak it a bit regardless.

What time of day / night are they usually on?  It is a quiet server because there aren't a lot of players, but we probably miss each other just because we're on at different times, too.  Like, I was on a few days ago continuing my obsessive mining, because I found it soothing.  I'm trying to figure out what I want to do next - I might go build something in the savannah I've made a portal to, and I think I should add some signage in the nether.

Glad to hear they're having fun.

Also, I think this is getting off-topic for the "Server Status" thread :P

Hrm. Are you still getting regular console messages about backups? if not, just regular daily backups are happening of the map files around 5am.

Other VMs on the box might be stealing some IO and cpu, but there's so much of it available, that i find it odd. Like the disk sits on a 4xhdd in raid10 (far, so it performs like raid0), cached by an nvme drive set to take the majority of the io. So basically disk access for something like MC should be nvme speeds most of the time. It's got dedicated ram that can't be stolen, and it's been pinned to a single module on a single socket, with its memory being tied to that zone... sooo, I'm not sure what's up. Other vms COULD take up excess cpu time on those cores, but its unlikely since theres 28 other cores they could be using.

If theres no "server backing up" type messages then it's not backing up the map every X hours. I should re-enable that. I decommissioned my older xeon server and moved all backup duties to the NAS, and I swapped the quad core xeon into the NAS which previously only had a dual core i3. And I hadn't remembered to setup the regular hourly minecraft map backups yet. It IS taking dailies, so at least we won't lose everything if theres map corruption or the vm dies. but it won't be super up to date if lots of stuff happened in one day.

I'll have to install some resource monitoring software to see whats up. I'll also attempt to prioritize minecrafts access to cpu and io. Give it minimum and maximum guaranteed bandwidth so it can't be completely starved, but also not starve anything else.

Been meaning to set up more detailed resource monitoring anyhow. It'll be interesting to see how that opteron box handles things.

Datapack mods

Two suggestions.. I am testing these on my home server right now. just need to put them in the datapacks folder in the world folder on the server an run the reload command.. No client side changes need.

1 Player Sleep
https://www.planetminecraft.com/project/1-13-datapack-1-player-sleep-4078421/

TreeCapitator (may need to unzip the folder since it isn't in the root of the zip)

1.13.2 is out and apparently adds some substantial performance and stability fixes. It might be worth adding to the server.

1.14 is still a ways away with new game-play however.

Villager breeding is more difficult and villager farming is disabled when mobGriefing is disabled.

I would like to suggest this datapack that only disables mobGriefing when in range of a creeper.

SB UnCreep DataPack
https://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/sb-uncreep/

There are some other datapacks that do things like this as well.

- Nether fortress located, blaze farm created
- Stronghold located, portal to the END is available (haven't touched the dragon yet.)

Might be interested in tackling the end dragon soon so we can explore the end cities and get all that sweat new stuff there.

No but, I was online when he took on the dragon with just his daughter because I was off trying to find the perfect location for my Forever Home (6250,-14000, plains with hills right next door, thanks Biome Finder!). They died in the end a couple of times, and his daughter got very sad that she lost all her good gear and quit and poor Lazy was left to fight the dragon all alone. Lazy, you deserve all the xp you got for that!

Darn it. Sorry.

Xander followed me into the "store room" and hit the power button on the server. It gracefully shut down, but hung before it actually shut off so I thought it was still on for a while. It should be back up now.

Ha!  I did that once to my dad's work machine, back when he still worked on mini computers (bigger than a micro computer).  Apparently me switching it off and right back on lost a lot of data, and backups were a lot harder to do in the late 70s.

I'm pretty glad he likes pushing and not holding buttons. And that PC power buttons are software controlled. a hard power switch could have meant a fair amount of corruption.

On and off, yes. I'm really hoping Overviewer will get set up again because I'm much more motivated to build stuff I can see on a big map.

I absolutely love gathering materials, feel free to post here when you need stuff, I always seem to have lots and am happy to share. It's a long, long way to my house, though, so I really should finish a nether transport system. Or we should put in portals again.

Try building out the ice boat system it is quite fast depending how far out you are.

Haven't looked into it fully but I could potentially host the server now as well, I have a dedicated server with a decent CPU running outside my NAS.

Curious what the current needs are for the server, how many vCPUs, RAM, JavaRAM allocated and the size of the world files are.

Maybe it's time for Tom to pass you the world files and let you run the server. I think you have a little more spare time to spend on it these days, or at least more energy for it.

I know I wouldn't have the energy to keep a server running.
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]

The biggest issue for me before would have been the hardware (not enough server power). Shrunk all my stuff down to my NAS a few years ago and only recently added a NUC back with a faster CPU.

As for time, that is highly variable but I do have an interest in it being up as I play on it on and off.

How beefy is this nuc? The server can be a bit cpu and io heavy on occasion.

I'm ok with handing it off. I just don't have the energy for it anymore.

If we want to do a graceful transition I could give you SFTP access to my NAS, if you start sending me world backups I can build a mirror that we can test on to see how well it works. Or the other way arround I could pull from you.

The NUC has a high end SSD in it a 7th gen i5 and a decent amount of ram..

I would be interested in knowing what your java Memory settings are etc.

If you are worried about the hardware I also have a fully functional server at my home that runs a pair of HyperV hosts that could host as well.  I would not have the time to setup and maintain, but hosting I can do no problem.  I can provide remote access through TeamViewer or SSH depending on what your needs are.  Attached are the specs from CPU-Z, and they are dual CPU.  Again I have two of these hosts, with SSDs and Spindle Drives.

java cli options: -Xmx4096M -Xms1024M -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalPacing -XX:ParallelGCThreads=4 -XX:+AggressiveOpts ...

Sometimes it needs a bunch of ram and cpu, but currently the vm is only using 2GB ram, and cpu use is really low. The more people you have on there, the worse it is.

I gave the VM 8GB ram and 6 threads/cores. Not sure it needs that, but it doesn't hurt.

I can fire off a backup whenever you like. integrating an auto scp would be possible...

I understand, if I start getting snapshots of the world it should be easy to do a graceful swap and to do a bunch of testing without needing any more input.

There are a few things we will need to coordinate however such as possibly repointing your dns record for the server to a cname I control, Shutting down your version and maybe putting in a MOTD to remind players to change to the new dns name in the future I can do that after the fact however.

It looks like Minecraft 1.15 will be a significant release. I hope the overviewer team keeps pace.

Not to pester but if you are able to at least send me one backup dump I can setup some testing to confirm I can adaquatly host the server. If it works we can just coordinate a time to do another one time backup and formally move things.

SFTP should be easier to repeat if we are going to do some testing before doing a final cut over and repeating the upload.

I just so rarely setup direct users I think I missed the fact port 2222 had been blocked..

I have a testing mirror of the server up at rwmc.contentcubby.ca .

I am currently doing some basic tests, if you want to log in and test it should have all the same whitelist etc as the normal server.

Please note that at this time the world might be reset / overwritten / go offline as I am testing, however it would be nice to have some remote users test connectivity.

Just a reminder I am JUST doing testing right now don't move to my server. I would do some more testing then take anther backup and get tom to redirect his DNS to my server to officially move over.

I have have overviewer running locally right now, I am working on a nice clean way to publish the map publicly, this map is being built off my backup which is NOT going to be kept current yet.

OK I think I have everything up and ready to go, maybe we can stress test the server with multiple players?

To cut over the server officially I suggest the following (we should plan WHEN this happens):

1. Shutdown the official server
2. Transfer a current backup to me
3. I will overwrite the test server with the last world backup
4. Update mc2.tomasu.org and mc2.svc.tomasu.net to be CNAMEs pointing to rwmc.contentcubby.ca so users that do not use the forums get redirected to the new server.

The whitelist is rather long actually. Not sure if it should be trimmed or if we should maybe just ID the entries as "friend of X" so we know who invited who.

Some of those in the long list are from allegro.cc's forums. Those names Thorin pointed out im not familiar with so either I didn't add them or they changed their name? Or I just forgot lol. I've added several people for Thorin's kids.

I added the caves render to the overviewer map.. I have mixed feelings about this view as it is cool to see how big some people mines are but at the same time it uncovers hidden items.

We should complete this migration so the over-viewer is up to date etc and the responsibility shifts over.

Send me a message when you have sent me a final backup and make sure to shut your server down.

The migration is complete and the server is up.

New Server Address: rwmc.contentcubby.ca
New Overviewer Address: https://rwov.contentcubby.ca/  (currently updates about once an hour)
Server Version:  1.14.x

Please remember to update your saved server address  mc2.tomasu.org or mc2.svc.tomasu.net or 68.148.49.236 to rwmc.contentcubby.ca

The old DNS addresses will continue to work for the foreseeable future. They have been forwarded to Lazy's domains and I see no reason to remove them.
Title: Re: Server Status [UP]
Post by: Lazybones on October 20, 2019, 12:32:21 PM
New Overviewer Address: https://rwov.contentcubby.ca/
- Overviewer currently updates about once an hour (I may make this more frequent depending on server load)
- If you want a sign to appear on Overviewer in the Sign filter put the text "--POI--" in one of the lines of the sign, probably line 4 / the last line for consistency.

Server Update: mods updated

Mods / Datapacks:
Disable Hostile Grief (https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/customization/disable-hostile-grief-data-pack)
One Player Sleep v3 (https://www.madcatgaming.com/one-player-sleep-data-pack/)
TreeCapitator V2.5.4 (https://www.planetminecraft.com/mod/treecapitator-datapack-1-13/)

Instead of the game rule that turns it off completely the data pack Disable Hostile Grief will just disable the hostile parts like creeper explosions, this should allow villager farms and villager breading among other things.

I haven't seen anyone else on the server since I upgraded it, hopefully everyone can check on there stuff at least.

If you are looking for NEW chunks that bees could have generated in I found and marked a flower forest biome, I have collected some bees for myself, I can probably just breed more and maybe leave some at spawn.

I have built a small green house with bees at spawn, be careful if you anger them they will kill them selves stinging you.

Feel free to bread them and use leads to take them away if needed.. or harvest some honey comb, build a bee nest, breed 3 more to fill it then take the bee-nest away with the bees in it.

Found some bamboo (https://rwov.contentcubby.ca/#/-1247/64/-166/-2/minecraft%20-%20overworld/day) finally and planted some at spawn.

Also installed a new datapack mod on the server Sethome v1.3.0 (teleport home) (https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/datapacks/)

There is an instruction video but for the most part you just need to know two triggers.. /trigger sethome and /trigger home .

Should cut travel in half and make getting lost a thing of the past.. if you want a more advanced teleport system I am open to that as well but at least you can ZIP back home now.

Title: Re: Server Status

I have SHRUNK the over world dimension map removing chunks that have been occupied less than 3 min. This has reduced the world folder for the over world by close to 1/4 so it should be good for performance.

You likely will not notice any difference in game but the impact on the over world map is clearly visible.

Pre Trim

Post Trim

I will leave touching the nether until 1.16 is released and I can upgrade.

Yes the majority of the over world was explored but not frequently occupied space.. Checking the location of all players it looks like we have strong occupied space around everyone's bases so I don't think anyone will miss anything.

Really looking forward to the nether update.. It should COMPLETELY change the nether into a place you want to explore.

Shulker boxes are portable storage, which is super handy for large builds as they can greatly expand what you can put in your personal inventory. They can also be dyed if you don't like the default purple.

Server Version:  1.16.1

The server has been updated and neither has been trimmed / reset.

I also did a full optimization run on the files so all chunk files should be the latest version.

This is what the neither looked like in mcselector before trim
pre-trim-mc.PNG

This is what it looked like in mcselector AFTER trim
post-trim-mc.PNG

This is what the neither looked like in overviewer before trim.
pre-trim-ov.PNG

This is what the neither looked like in overviewer  after trim.
post-trim-ov.PNG

IF overviewer gets updates or glitches I will regenerate the maps. It doesn't support any of the new 1.16 block types yet so it isn't going to render the nether great to begin with.

PLEASE check your bases, as usual I will consider a rollback for up to about a week as long as it doesn't wreck builds, however with mcselector I might even be able to export and patch maps in that case.

I think it had torches.  I'm not 100% sure on that though. Sometimes I just ignite Netherrack for illumination.

Quote from: LennyLen on June 25, 2020, 05:27:14 PMI think it had torches.  I'm not 100% sure on that though. Sometimes I just ignite Netherrack for illumination.

My map trimming depended on finding things that do not naturally spawn in the nether so if it was lit with netherrack that both explains why it didn't get filtered and why I didn't catch it on the map visually.

I kept all chunks that had the following blocks and a few around them.

Palette contains "torch" OR
Palette contains "wall_torch" OR
Palette contains "stone" OR
Palette contains "packed_ice" OR
Palette contains "stone_button" OR
Palette contains "obsidian" OR
Palette contains "ladder"

If you didn't lose too much and are OK with it I will leave it, if in the next few days anyone finds a major loss we can look at restoring it. I would have to restore the WHOLE old nether, let you mark it and then re-trim it.. The trim was nessary as in the nether the player view distance generates a lot of chunks.. and the biggest change in this update is the nether bioms so I didn't want anyone to have to travel far to find the new stuff as there is a LOT of new stuff. I also didn't want to do a full reset as there are a lot of fast travel tunnels setup.

Just a quick warning.

Piglin can spawn in the transport tunnels if they have not been properly spawn blocked and are aggressive to the player by default unless the player has an item of gold armour.. Had some attach me when doing spot checks.

The zombie pig men are now Zombified Piglin, the behaviour of being passive till attacked is the same but they look like piglin now. Don't confuse them.

Don't forget to reset your home, it is a different plugin with different syntax.. It isn't super intuitive but you can have multiple homes now.. (you lose your XP by using the TP however)

Looks like I should turn auto updates off.. I think it is working however it generates cookies and remembers zoom levels.. Something drastic changed in the URL zoom level format so every time I open it now it start zoomed out to black, however it appears to be there if I zoom in.

Taking a look, it is generating tiles / content and isn't hung, but there might be other problems.

Found the real cause.. Looks like Mincraft region files are being generated WAY WAY WAY outside the map area, probably one of the datapacks.. This is causing overviewer to generate huge amounts of blank space, hence the zoom issue.

Might need to change settings and re-render it all..

I think I have fixed it by limiting the area overviewer renders. If anyone builds outside this LARGE limit, I can just make the area bigger.

From the first post in the thread

Quote- Overviewer currently updates about once an hour
- If you want a sign to appear on Overviewer in the Sign filter put the text "--POI--" in one of the lines of the sign, probably line 4 / the last line for consistency.

If you DO have --POI-- in the last line of your signs and they do not show up after the next refresh, let me know.

Just a thought but how would you guys feel about a fresh server for the Caves and Cliffs update?

I ask because our current server is pretty built up already and few people play. Might be fun to have a fresh start

Thoughts?

Looking through he discord bot status post few people play on the server (reminder if you want online notifications, I have a bot that posts notifications to the RW discord in the minecraft channel)

Looks like LennyLen, Mr_Analog and Thorin are the only active players in the last few months

11/06/2020 -'ValkyGames'

08/24/2020 - 'BMan_C'

08/23/2020 - ['Catasin', 'McDoodleSquish', 'bag0bones'] Last time I played significantly with my daughters on the server.

04/22/2020 - ['FabledMessiah']

Not sure if LennyLen follows the forum much, if he doesn't respond to the thread I can change the MOTD on the server or maybe someone can stalk him on  the server and get his thoughts?

I would suggest we wait just a little bit after it comes out in case overviewer is broken. They normally also pump out a .1 or .2 quickly after release.

I should reset the server whitelist if we do a clean start I don't know who a lot of the authorized players are and the whitelist carried over from when Tom was hosting this world

I'm okay with a reset. For my home location, I want a plains area with hills / mountains nearby for the mining, though. Notice how far out I went this time just to find my happy space?

And we should really set up a teleportal system again, so we can more easily visit spawn and each other. Even in a boat on packed ice in the nether, it takes me several minutes to get to spawn.

Yeah, that wasn't my favourite map, that's for sure.  I'd like spawn to be some plains with some forest nearby and some desert nearby and some swamp nearby.  And I wouldn't mind getting another Spawn City built.

It's gonna be another five or six months before it's out, though, right?

As to the topic at hand - I'm not opposed to a server restart.

Sounds like the active community agrees on on a new map.

When the release comes out there will be a few pre-requisites from my end so everyone will need to hold on for a bit:

1. The docker tools I use to manage and update the server will need to be compatible (should be very quick)
2. I will have to check if overviewer is supported / won't blow up (you guys can tell me if this is optional or not)
3. Map / spawn selection.. I might enlist help for picking a seed as this is going to be subjective.
4. Mods / Datapacks - we have a number of them on the server to make things easier you will have to tell me what the minimum expectations are.

Quote from: Thorin on January 28, 2021, 09:09:25 PMAnd we should really set up a teleportal system again, so we can more easily visit spawn and each other. Even in a boat on packed ice in the nether, it takes me several minutes to get to spawn.

Quick reminder that there are already several teleport mods installed on the server

Spawn (Enter '/trigger spawn' to teleport to the world spawn point. /function spawn:config) (https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/datapacks/)

Homes (Allows you to set homes ('/trigger sethome' or '/trigger sethome set <ID>') and teleport back to them ('/trigger home' or '/trigger home set <ID>'). /function homes:config) (https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/datapacks/)

TPA (Enter '/trigger tpa set <PID>' to request to teleport to another player. Press Tab to see each player's PID (Player ID).) (https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/datapacks/)

Back (Enter '/trigger back' to go back to the last location you teleported from (using Homes, Spawn, or TPA), or to your last death location if that's enabled. /function back:config) (https://vanillatweaks.net/picker/datapacks/)

I am working on confirming some things like datapack but I am tentatively planning to do an in-place upgrade of the server to 1.17 this weekend.

Overviewer will not display new 1.17 objects but appears to run.

I will have to go through the datapacks as well..
Title: Re: Server Status
Post by: Lazybones on June 12, 2021, 10:31:51 PM
Server has been updated to 1.17

We lost two of the teleport datapacks as there isn't an equivalent yet.

The One player sleep datapack has been replaced by the new 1.17 game rule "playersSleepingPercentage 0".

Let me know if there are any issues.

The plan is to start a new world when part 2 of the update comes out which I THINK will be versioned 1.18 IIRC.

Notice the current world and MC server will likely go offline this week in prep for a COMPLETE reset for 1.18.

1. A new forum thread will be created for server status.
2. The server whitelist will be reset
3. No promises but the target is to have a new server running for the weekend if possible.

Checkout the 1.18 topic thread (https://forums.rwoc.ca/index.php?topic=12310.0) for ideas being put forward for the new reset server / world.
