Using search engines as keywords in Chrome

So for a long time I've been trying to find the quickest non-mouse way of opening bookmarks in Chrome.  I find myself pressing Alt+D to get into the Omnibar (yes, that's what it's called, and yes, Ctrl+L works too), then wanting to just type a couple of keystrokes and hitting Enter.  The Omnibar is good at bringing up previously-visited URLs, but I found myself having to move down the list to the one I want (thus, extra keystrokes - did I mention I'm lazy?).

So today I found http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/open-google-chrome-bookmarks-keyboard-shortcuts/.  What they describe here, basically, is to add a bunch of search engines in Chrome, and for each search engine you define a keyword (one or more characters) and a URL.  The really cool thing is that search engines are always first in the list!  Here's an example search engine I set up:

Name: Not Invented Here
Keyword: nih
URL: http://notinventedhe.re/

So now I open Chrome (by pressing Shift+Win+C thanks to WinHotKeys), then press Alt+D, then type nih and press Enter and I see the Not Invented Here comic in all its glorious goodness!

Here's another sample:

Name: RW New
Keyword: rw
URL: http://forums.righteouswrath.com/index.php?action=unread;all;start=0

Shift+Win+C
Alt+D
rw then Enter
*boom*, the list of unread posts on Righteous Wrath.

Really, kinda cool!  Also, that MakeUseOf link I had at the beginning talks about Firefox having the same kind of keywords but directly attached to the bookmarks, so it's even simpler there.

That's cool, kinda like dial-a-bookmark, I had something similar in Firefox but I found I used it less, so many times I just open the splash page and the link I want is right there in the top 8 (usually).

Mind you I don't have a lot of bookmarks...

It's all about not wanting to move my hand to the mouse and leaving both hands on the keyboard...  If I've already got my hand on the mouse, then I'll just click the bookmark on the bookmark toolbar.

It does mean that I need to remember what my keywords are, but hey:

"rw" - new posts here
"so" - Stack Overflow
"oots" - Order Of The Stick
"gm" - GMail
"dil" - Dilbert
"lt" - Lowetide hockey blog
...
They're not so hard to remember :)
