Title: MINECRAFT
Post by: Mr. Analog on December 10, 2011, 07:59:53 AM
Um, so yeah, stumbled onto a great set of videos (starting here-> http://youtu.be/4UdEFmxRmNE watch the first 3 I DARE YOU) and finally FINALLY the curiosity light bulb went on.

Does anyone here have a server set up? Would anyone LIKE to have a common server?

I had a server running, and can set one up again fairly easily.

append: Also that first video happens to show an older version of the game, some interesting new mechanics have been added, and made fighting mobs a tad easier. At least you don't die quite so often.

Oh I know the version on the vids is very very old, but damn it's hilarious.

Wouldn't mind playing latest or whatever you're running, though it will likely be Sunday :)

I just installed 1.0, so you'll have to run that, since the client and server like to match in versions. It's up and running, so feel free. And let me know if its laggy. I might have to play with the QoS settings.

Sadly video doesn't work for me atm. At least if you have a newer version of skype. 2.2 for lunix crashes X when the video starts arriving, and 2.1 won't do video at all with newer clients.

Yeah, I don't get it at all (it may have to do with the popularity, but still lots of T&A for some reason).

What got me started was this:

Mini golf!

Yeah I had a few Windows issues (turns out Minecraft hangs on Windows 7 64 bit if you don't have 64 bit Java installed).

Sort of a pain in the ass fix though:
-Download and install 64 bit Java
-Download the Minecraft JAR
-Create a shortcut that will invoke Minecraft using 64 bit Java

All my hanging/stuttering issues went away. The worst was the first time it happened, I got surrounded by baddies and things started to get all choppy (it was HORRIBLE). Then I started a creative session locally and got the same thing after roughly the same duration.

The game is pretty addictive (I played it all damn day), I need some gold and some more iron. I've almost got the monorail built :D

I'm going to have to think of more stuff to build with all the damn cobblestone I have lol

I guess I'll start smelting it into stone and make a more grandiose house haha.

I also found out that you can make instant crops with bonemeal (finally a use for the damn things).

On Sunday I spent some time in creative mode and figured out how powered rails and detector rails work, if I had enough iron I could make a roller coaster :D

Hey, have you guys found any dungeons yet?

This morning I learned all about redstone repeaters

1. Do you have a white list set?

2. Do you mind if I invite a few people?

No and no. But I expect people to be respectful of other people's stuff. Also I may be adding some mods to the server in the future.

White listing is rather easy, I got the idea after seeing so many bots crawling this thread, who knows what real life creepers might join in and mess with stuff

Ooh, which mods?

Buildcraft, redstone power, and Equivalent Exchange are all on the menu, but EE doesn't have multiplayer support yet.

I might set up a whitelist. But its not advertising on the main minecraft server list, so for the most part it'll be ok. The other server I was playing on didn't have a white list and noone found it, other than people from the community that was hosting it.

Sev installed some portals, and we have a portal to 2048 blocks away from spawn, in two separate directions. He also lured some pigs back, so we now have pigs!

One of these days I'll have to check out The Nether. I've seen a couple portals already but I is scared of what might be in there...
Title: Re: MINECRAFT

Hey does anyone have a Flame Rod or know where there might be Blazes in the Nether?

Now that I've started Enchanting stuff I want to try my hand at Brewing :B

Gotta set up a chemistry laboratory to go with my "R&D" section haha. Incidentally if you are in need of an Enchanting table / library I have one built up (3rd floor, North wing, double doors labelled "Research & Development", you can't miss it).

Also it seems I've tunnelled my way nearly back to the spawn (close to a generated village). I built a new Skyway all the way back to The Moose. (<- if you were on Tom's server that sentence would make sense!)

I've found a lot of diamond now that I'm digging at the right level. When I started my first deep mine I had miscounted the base level of bedrock by about 5 and was digging a few levels too high.

Oh yeah, I also built a Nether portal too close to my neighbour so when I return to the Overworld I never end up in my own house lol

Except early in the morning near Starbucks and Timmies, where zombies naturally congregate and then spontaneously raise from the dead after drinking their healing elixirs.

Probably watermellons. They are somewhat rare. But once you have some, you can plant them and start a farm. Each slice is only worth 1 heart though, so you need a lot of them. But then each mellon leads to a lot of slices, so you end up with a lot of them.

Let's get some Endermen Pearls and find one of those fortress things

I spruced up my house and found some cool stuff (diamond/gold/redstone). I've left lots of signs for people who go poking around the place as it's right near the spawn.

I also found a LOT of caves full of nasty things

I really need to get a farm going though THE RED WARRIOR NEEDS FOOD BADLY

I plan on building some really cool buildings and a proper railway system this time. Though it will have to be further away from the spawn, this biome is very dense with trees/hills and stuff... maybe a subway system just below ground level.

Some screenshots so unlike the previous server I don't lose stuff I build. All this was built in a couple of nights

Nothing super cool yet but who knows what things will be like in a week!

Wow, that's quite the construction for a couple nights' work.  Is there an overriding plan you have in mind?

I like how your house pictures look like pixelated versions of what a real estate agent would take :)

Haha, as you can see lots of nice amenities, close to resources and in a nice quiet neighbourhood lol

I think my next project is to make a map and go exploring. My goal after that is to find enough sand to build a glass dome to house a medium sized farm. (THE FUTURE!)

After that will be a rail link south where I'm going to build some relatively large structures. In the long term this house will become sort of a guest place for anyone to use.

After that will be building a nether portal and I'm going to try my hand at brewing. Oh, I also want to try building some kind of machine that makes music. Redstone is a lot of fun to play with but I haven't been motivated enough to build something really cool.

Of course it will depend on who else starts playing on this server, Minecraft communities tend to grow organically. So who knows, in a week there could be another giant moose LOL

Actually I'm sure there are pub servers like that, yes.

It's generally accepted that you don't move into someone else's patch I don't know how organized some servers are, that said griefing is a problem on some servers... (as I'm sure many YouTube videos can confirm)

aparently this game is not like Minecraft (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hog8L-lr4_w): http://wiki.terrariaonline.com

seems like so many Indie games are inspired by previous games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N__BhXhbSUs), not to knock good/successful ones (such as Minecraft). But it's rare you find unique ideas, especially lots from a single developer (such as http://www.mattmakesgames.com/ e.g. "Untitled Story" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaAqjGNh0r8) which reminds me of stuff like Meatboy and IwannaBeThatGuy, only not nearly as insanely tough ).

Well it's sort of like how many Portal clones cropped up in the last few years.

I love indie developers sometimes but the ones that glomp onto a fandom and want to add their own little twist drive me nuts (unless it's especially clever).

My subway (will) traverse nearly 32 chunks from the spawn location to a nice little beach area where I intend to set up a nicer house

The spawn is very snowy but I've made the best of it so far, I've built a library with an enchantment table and a portal building. There are so many trees, an impossible amount of them, wood is not a problem (unlike our last map which was mostly plains and desert).

I had really bad luck when I first went into the portal, I got stuck spazzing out inside the portal on the nether end, I had to log off and log on a few times to get out of it. I brought a ton of cobblestone to fortify the portal, I had basic walls and floor done but a damn Ghast sent a fireball right at the portal knocking it out, now I was in trouble because for some reason I decided to leave my flint and tinder with my good equipment back in the overworld. I quickly built up a pillbox around the portal to reduce any additional damage and then I tabbed out to find out if there was any way to relight the portal, turns out the explosion from a Ghast's fireball can re-light it, so I tore down the walls and tried attracting one of the THREE Ghasts that was tag-teaming me, it took a while but eventually I fireball relit the portal, UNfortunately I was at pretty low health and I too was on fire.

So long story short, I got the portal re-lit just in time to die and lose half the items I brought into the nether (which, admittedly, wasn't much as I suspected something like this would happen on my first trip to the Nether).

I finally found the other house from one of the other players, it was hidden on the other side of the trees opposite where I've built my stuff, it's pretty cool but he's right on top of a HUGE cavern that empties into lava and he dug a garbage chute straight down but for some reason there's a ladder so... I'm glad I know shift will hold you into place otherwise lava-bath LOL.

My goals are:
-To complete the first subway link
-Build a portal in the Nether to allow fast travel between locations
-Build a gate using sticky pistons (I haven't seen/heard any slimes yet)
-Build a mob farm (that might get me my slime drops...)
-Find clay (seriously, where is it?)
-Build a super-cool ocean front estate

I've designed the gate in a local test instance, it's pretty tight, I just need sticky pistons...

Slimes are sadly quite rare in my experience :( All I've managed to see in the old map was like 6 of them.

As for clay, its found in abundance in marshy areas.

Yeah! I think I found some actually it was in sort of a circle. Damn slimes, maybe the nether slimes are easier to find?

Sticky pistons would be cool...

SCREENS!

-The Spawn Street Terminal entrance for the A Line
-Which is closed for now (to be completed in 2012!)
-But it's okay, I have the keys and can let you in. Single track only for now
-Dats a looooooong tunnel
-The dot in the centre of the map is my house, the marker is where the beach terminal will eventually be, once it's done
-Read you a book at the Libary
-The Portal Building (cue evil sounds)
-Damn Portal, where's GLaDOS!

Eventually these may become stations if I can find enough iron and gold. Speaking of gold (and redstone) the track is set up for maximum speed where a powered rail is placed every 8 metres.

Not only are slimes rare to find, their a royal pain to fight, the separate into smaller slimes about 3 or 4 times giving you about 12 slimes jumping at you... X(

Also, might I ask what type of server are you running, just the one off of Minecraft.net, or one from Bukkit?

It's a good investment of time, it adds SO much more stuff to it. Mine is a bukkit server, and we have our own economy, factions, the list goes on... Some are more useful than others such as Permissions and GroupManager.

a handful of other MC videos from that user: http://www.youtube.com/user/271kochu -- including a presumably-cool piston machine demonstration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFxvmKtWy1k) -- I don't get it tho (but even I can recognize that @ 5:02 the "self-repairing" piston/generator thingie is pretty amazing)

I guess it's this kind of hackity-crackity stuff that leads to "12hr Digital Clock (35x15x14) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xvuh5XJaQBo)" eh?

The creativity of Minecraft users is endless, I've seen so many amazing things (like a fully functional Pong game)

Usually you can download the maps and see for yourself how much work goes into things (like a Turing Complete Machine!!).

Of course patches often change things but people bounce back so fast now, plus the game itself is pretty fun. Arrgh, now I want to play!

You need to work on your backup procedures.... Don't want something like that happening to your real work. ;0

Heh. well normally I have my backups running every night, and every week those get copied offsite. But in this case, it was that I didn't cp -a world world.bak  before re-running the minecraft server.

And the previous problem was because I had manually excluded ~/minecraft so it didn't copy the offline worlds I had on a couple machines, and forgot that the server also had it in ~/minecraft. whoops.

ALL SOURCE CODE MUST BE STORED IN A SOURCE CONTROL REPOSITORY ON A SEPARATE DRIVE
preferably on a separate machine in a separate location
and of course that separate machine must have nightly backups

There's really no excuse for not using source control with the plethora of free, open-source source control repository software.

Oh, but this is about minecraft world file backups.  Yeah, does that mean that whole subway is gone?

No heck no. I just didn't make a copy of the world before updating the minecraft server. The new version upgraded the world in place to a new format. The old server will likely no longer be able to understand the new data, so there's no going back to the old version.

I want to see if they fixed the collision detection on farm animals. No matter what I did, they could get out of fences, and doors. My next attempt would have been just to put the animals in a pit, and put a ladder down...

I guess you can make wheat/sugar cane farms that use pistons and bone meal to insta-grow tons of stuff.

Yeah, regular farming is pretty crazy, I don't know if they've fixed the animals from spazzing on fences.

Title: Re: MINECRAFT
Post by: Mr. Analog on March 09, 2012, 02:20:14 PM
Somewhere around 600 blocks of sand as I estimate I'll need roughly 1600 window panes (25 stacks of 64).

1 sand block = 1 glass block
6 glass blocks = 16 window panes

(600 / 6) * 16 = 1600

10 stacks of 64 sand should do the trick.

I found a ton of diamond last night, time to build some awesome armour and explore the nether.

I built a boat and discovered the whole north side of the map is ocean, if you make a map you can use shift+click on the crafting table to get a copy of map_0. (It centres on the spawn house)

The majority of our continent is tundra so far as I have mapped. There are some desert biomes to the north and targa to the east (where the skyscraper is now).

To the south appears to be swamp or jungle, I've not been close enough to be sure yet.

I still haven't opened my copy of MassEffect 3 yet! Can't take on Minecraft right now...

Minecraft can be played over lunch... can be played from a web browser... can be played when you have a free moment but not enough time to get into a ME3 story progression.

No Time is not really an excuse. It may be just my world at the moment, but I hear this far to often now.  And every time I want to use it myself I am regretful when I do.  But it is way easier to say that to someone than really what you want to say.  It just seems too convenient to use for some as of late (no one here mind you - just in my RL circles outside of here), and it is starting to gnaw at me.

Now Priority level is an excuse - you will always find time for things you really want to do: Look after the family, have a dinner with your significant other, read a book, sleep, eat, watch a TV show, relax, etc.  So if your interest is low then the "use of your time" priority is low.

Sorry Lazy, not particularly picking on you, more just ranting a bit about the lack of time everyone seems to have despite the same 24h clock we all live with.... /sigh

I can't  / won't play games while at work
I have a 1h 15min commute (means home time starts later)
My children frequently need attention until at least 9pm ish / I have after work activities to do.

So if you want to play starting past 10pm your time maybe,.... because that is when I get my gaming in... That and sometimes on the weekends when I am not out and about most of the day.

I like gaming but it isn't a priority... or at least I don't have much time for the priority level that gaming falls under.

I think once/if you get up to two plus kids you will understand... Thorin is even busier, more kids and they are in demanding activities.

If the iOS version supported online play with the server, then I would probably be able to sneak in some play time at other times of day.

Sorry you can't play at work... makes my lunch times a good refresher for the afternoon.  I know family life is important, and would never say otherwise.  After 10 is when I am there most nights if I am on...

QuoteI like gaming but it isn't a priority... or at least I don't have much time for the priority level that gaming falls under.
That is what I was getting at.  Priorities shift and change.  If gaming isn't a priority, that is fine.

QuoteI think once/if you get up to two plus kids you will understand... Thorin is even busier, more kids and they are in demanding activities.
And yet Thorin makes time for his D&D game nights, despite his many engagements, because it is a priority to him.  He isn't out of time, he just spends it differently.

And another peeve I am starting to get is the "when you have kids you will understand" statements.  Yes I know my life will change.  Yes I know my finances will change.  Yes I get that life will be different, that time will seem to disappear for myself or ourselves (meaning my wife and I).  Just cause I don't have kids of my own doesn't mean I live a sheltered uneducated life.  This way I live my life today is because my priorities and responsibilities are based on that life.  When my life changes, so will those priorities and responsibilities.  I hope when it is my turn with the family life that I have some aspect of my gaming still there - it relaxes me, it gives me a break from RL - it is a release.  I just may spend once a week at it instead of 3 to 4... or maybe more.  I won't know what that looks like until it happens.  Every one is different.  Hell I can see a difference between your parenting and Thorin's... between my wife's best friend and one of mine... neither are wrong to me, but there are definite differences which works for those whom use them.

Sorry again Lazy... you just happen to be hitting some RL sore points between me and others in my life circle... especially around my wedding and xmas events.  If you can't justify the priority no worries.  Know you will be missed.

QuoteIf the iOS version supported online play with the server, then I would probably be able to sneak in some play time at other times of day.

Yeah I was hoping it was as well so I could use the wife's iPad to play while Grey's is on....

Well I was able to do some more exploring at lunch... wow did I ever find a large cavern area... connecting caves upon connecting caves.  Found 3 dungeons so far, one had two chest in it full of Iron Buckets - have to figure out what to do with them :D.

For some reason I could see the creepers this time and catch them before explosion.  But Mr. Analog is right; for some reason the Mob population near my big hall is very high!!!
Title: Re: MINECRAFT

Yeah, there are like two or three interconnected ravines on the east side of the map (where you is).

If you find a lot of mobs spawning there are two things to check:
1. Is there enough light? (dark areas will spawn mobs)
2. Are there openings or otherwise high ceilings

Mobs will spawn in any dark area, so if you have a big room with a high ceiling and not enough lights mobs will spawn.

If you take a peek at my mine system you'll notice a few things: narrow corridors, lots of light, no area larger than 16x16 metres.

If you mean the area with your furnaces there were two skeletons there when I was making my way out... but yeah you'll get baddies wandering around in cave systems, that's usually why I wall them off when I'm in mining mode. I like exploring but I make sure to dump my valuables (diamond, iron ore, etc) off first and just keep the essentials (picks, shovels, torches, armor, weapons, food...) that way if I die in lava (or die in a place I can't find again lol) I'm ok

Minecraft on iPhone / iPod - has already invaded my house.

D&D - it's been a while (end of November), but yes I enjoy this game and its priority is below kids' sports but above relax-at-home-doing-nothing family time and TV time.

Munchkin - absolutely!  I like how you put "twice" instead of "once".  The second time through it's a lot more clear what you should do than the first time through.

Time sink and addictive personalities - The "addictive" part of the personality is what makes one ignore timers if they've been set.  Seriously, I've done Freeciv until 4am, whereupon my wife tells me to come to bef, whereupon I say, "One minute" and continue playing, and at 7am it's time to get off the computer to go to work.  Sure, it's easy to just get up from the computer and walk away, but my body likes the release of endorphins it gets from playing and at that point I'm not thinking rationally.

Lunchtime play - my lunchtime is usually spent making lunch for my youngest, going out with work colleagues, or catching up on work so I can knock off early to go to a rink / sports venue.  Those rank higher in priority than video games.  Also,. wasn't this originally about getting us all online in the evening together?  Maybe I read that wrong.

"when you have kids" - I know, it sounds like an excuse, same as "when you get older".  However, there are things I _must_ do because of my children that I would otherwise give a negative one billion priority (assuming higher numbers mean higher priority).

Anyway, at the moment my default zone-out activity is watching TV.  Maybe I could use that time to play video games instead.

Also, it sounds like you're complaining about people not coming to weddings or Christmas parties because they're too busy.  They should probably try to make a point of attending such life events.

Anyway, it would be very cool if you guys could join us... but whatever, everyone has different priorities.

Hey so we should hook up voice communication while playing so we don't get exploded while typing in "watch out for th...." :)

I think a few of us use Skype already maybe that's the best thing?

I would also like to add that even when you have "Free personal time" and the kids are around / awake, they frequently require your attention, note for small children this isn't optional even if you believe what they want is trivial... 1) developmentally responding is important for bonding and having them respond to you when you ask for their attention 2) small children do not come with empathy, they develop it over time. IE they place no priority on what your needs are and will escalate till their needs are met. So to be fare to my kids I try not to engage in fixed focus activities I can't drop / pause / resume (single player games are easier this way)

So after 9PM Pacific time, IF the kids are in bed I can play some online multi-player.
On weekends where I am not working on a project, paint-balling (year round outdoor here), cleaning for guests (board game / munchkin nights), out of town visiting my dad, or out doing a family activity all day, I probably have some time, if my partner will watch the kids, or they are asleep....

Now back to minecraft, I have to say I am VERY unsure about this game as I have previously become tired of most pure sandbox type games in very short amount of time. Also given the length of time some here have been playing I wonder if anyone is going to reach burn out soon.

Looking at the tutorials the crafting looks intense and will require a lot of reference to figure out. On the flip side building sky scrapers and monster traps looks like fun...

So far the drive for me has been that you can build a lot of stuff with just limited resources / game mechanics. I mean I've seen everything from golf to turing complete machines and everything in between.

You can play Minecraft classic for free, if you want to get a feel for it:
http://www.minecraft.net/classic/play

Knowing basic crafting recipes is important for sure:
-Crafting table (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting_Table)
-Axe (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Axe)
-Pick (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Pickaxe)

and so on... (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting)

What *finally* got me interested in actually playing the game was watching the YOGSCAST videos, I started tuning in last summer after seeing the Enterprise D vids (I think I found it through Captain Sparklez video about it?) I was just amazed at what people were building for adventure maps (even if most were done in "creative mode"), just the sheer variety of stuff...

Their "How to Play" series turned into an epic adventure somewhat by accident as they had left their server open and the IP public. The first few vids sort of show you the basics though, but then things start to get pretty crazy...

Minecraft: Part 1: How to Survive the First Night (http://youtu.be/4UdEFmxRmNE)

The game itself is a lot of fun to play, and the best part is that even in Survival Multiplayer (SMP) you can get a lot of things built in just an hour or two.

So what are the basic mechanics of the multi-player server, starting as a noob?

I show up on the server, can I seek shelter in your buildings? Can I open the doors? I am guessing there is a good chance I could spawn at night.

Obviously don't mess with others stuff, but where is everyone building? Where would I start building?

I might muck around with the free game a little and think about it....

I jumped in without really talking to anyone a couple weeks or so ago, read up using the Minecraft wiki when I needed to know what to build and started building near the other houses. I had no idea how to stay alive, fight, mine, gather food, etc.  Basically before that point I hadn't even watch much vids or read anything about it.

Within a few hours I had my castle built, and started my exploration. It really is easy to jump into and play.  And still took me till last weekend to really ask a question or to.

And yes on Tom's server most people haven't locked up their stuff so you can run and hide if need be.

Also most materials are recyclable so building something and ripping it down to try again costs you nothing but time.

Try the free one first (which I skipped) and hopefully you enjoy it!!!

I moved off a ways from everyone by one of the beaches. I kept on getting blown up by creepers near buildings last night, causing unwanted damage to existing structures.

Went through several phases last night.
Overwhelmed
Frustrated
Acceptance
Addiction

Oh gosh that reminds me of my first time too, first there's fear, then there was desperation for resources finally there's the conquest phase where you shape your world.

And the thing is you go through these phases at various points, like when you find a new cave system or venture into the Nether.

I think that's the real addiction part heh
Title: Re: MINECRAFT
Post by: Lazybones on March 16, 2012, 09:23:54 AM
I was much better off once I was away from everything established and could start expanding without fear... far fewer mobs spawning near my area... In fact since I am building on an island I seem to be able to be out doors fairly easy at night as long as I keep the torches up.

I plan on building a path back to the rest of the gang and possibly an extension of the rail system, assuming I can find the resources. At the very least I will build the tunnel and then maybe we can collaborate on the rail.. There is a nice natural pit with lava to explore on a near by beach and a another larger island land mass.

I believe my issue last night with skeletons was the light levels in populated area's, they can spawn in fairly well lit areas... Watch your lighting density.

Boats seem to be a pain to get in and out of without them drifting off or being destroyed... I was going to make a better dock but I might abandon that for a tunnel.

Found enough mushrooms to make a few bowel of stew so my character isn't starving any more.... hehe.

Hehe! One of the more interesting things to build if you're by an ocean is a dry-dock / boat launcher. I always break my boats (always have wood in your inventory! just in case!)

I'm actually thinking about building a super secret base once I get my industrial empire in order

I started a tunnel last night from the base of my bath house to the beach, near you Lazy... so when it is done, we can try and make one between it and your island fortress.  It is down near the bead rock though, so not the subway stuff that Stewie and Mr. Analog have been doing.  This will at least give you access to my mines if you need anything :D and give me a way to ship stuff to you.

well I am planning on taking over the beaches in my area... Melbosa found me last night.

I think I am going to have to look into how the boat launcher works...

Started making glass, I am going to probably need to ship in some coal unless I can find a local source... I have a large supply of sand, that is for sure

The tree cover in our starting area seems to be a part of our mob problem BTW, both zombies and skeletons can survive the day with a minimal amount of tree shade... I am constantly finding zombies mid day in the forests... I think I am going to make a nice axe and start clear cutting some sections...

I can start digging a link eastward toward your fortress Mel.

I was planning on widening the southbound tunnel to allow for two track travel, I can add a switch to any of the track lines now that I can make sticky pistons.

I think what I may also do is add a better system for pausing minecarts at stations. I'll play around in creative mode to figure out something useful

I'll also be using detector tracks and sound boxes to add signal tones for incoming / outgoing traffic (BING-BOONG BING-BOONG)

You can make a coal equivalent with trees, burn the raw logs in a furnace with other logs (or wooden stuff, sticks, planks, doors, etc) to make charcoal.

That solves two problems. Just make sure to collect saplings as they drop from trees so you can replenish your topiary.

After leaning some more basics last night, I started making my tunnel from the island back to the main land (easier target to hit)... I believe I am a little more than half way but I believe the under water land mass drops off, so I will have to do some pure under water construction soon, which will be slower. I will likely alter its grade, as at the moment it steps down several times, I would like to make it flatter to make it easier to run or lay track in later.

Yep, the number one priority for tools is once you find better material; upgrade

Making a diamond axe sounds pointless until you realize you can tear through a lot of trees very quickly.

Oh yeah! You don't have to cut down the leaves, they will dissipate on their own (and drop more saplings and possibly apples too!)

Yeah, it's WAY more dense than anything I've seen before but then again I don't think I've ever seen the targa biome before heh

We need some renders of our world for planning!

Some of these are cool

That would be cool!

I'm actually thinking of doing a video walkthrough later when we have more builds completed

An overhead landmark map would be so handy for navigation.

Only down side migh be spoilers for unexplored areas.

Oh yeah! You don't have to cut down the leaves, they will dissipate on their own (and drop more saplings and possibly apples too!)

I often end up hacking through a bunch of them since many are at ground level and blocking the whole area... Compared to almost all minecraft screen shots I have seen we have a very very dense forest.

Agreed there!  and must say NICE!

I have to figure out how the in-game Map works... unless it really is nothing more than a novelty item.  Cavern exploration near my mine can really get you turned around and lost easy!

True dat, half the fun is stumbling onto new stuff.

That said I've filled a map about 50% so far, I'll have to wander around any new builds to update it but you can see just how large the targa continent our spawn is centred on really is.

1. Compass always points to spawn (not north)

2. Map centres on where you crafted it

You can copy the first map made (map_0) by shift-clicking it when it's on the crafting table into your inventory.

Direct link to the wiki mapping tools http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Programs_and_editors/Mapping#Mappers

Some seem to keep up with updates better than others.. It isn't clear to me if these have to be run server side or can be done client side... I would assume server, but so far most of the ones I have looked had had little or no documentation.

Ooh yeah, sorry! You can craft a map with paper and a compass.

Another thing about the compass is the little red dial is a bit confusing. It's a pixelated line and can be hard to use at first but it you need to read the end of the line that's closest to the outside edge of the compass. Sometimes it looks like an arrow if you follow that arrow you're going in the opposite direction.

I started mapping (map_0) near the spawn so it's pretty handy, you can clone it thus:

QuoteIn vanilla release version 1.0.0 survival mode, to obtain a new map the user must not hold down shift when picking up the created map from the crafting table: holding shift while picking up the map will always create a clone of map_0, the first map created in that world. Every map cloned this way is named exactly the same (map_0) and is automatically updated with all the rest.

Also http://journeymap.techbrew.net/ might make that obsolete anyway, looks like it runs client side, I am thinking having it a second monitor would be awesome.

You can make it yourself:

-Craft a compass
-Craft some paper (need sugar cane, get some near my house!)
-Craft a map, but rather than click+drag into your inventory shift+click it and it should make a copy of map_0 (and all the maps update each other yay!)

I haven't tried this since 1.0.0 though...

I hope when it is my turn with the family life that I have some aspect of my gaming still there

#whichwillitbe... ;)

tbh, I totally understand both POVs, there's plenty of things that used to be important to me that no longer are, as a result of taking my Parent role (privilege, actually!) a lot more seriously ... but I don't judge anyone who still holds on to old habits/interests. That stuff doesn't normally hurt the map at all. Minecraft seems to save directly to the map every chance it gets, at most with a crash you might lose a few minutes or an hour of time? Maybe? I did set my backups back up. Every morning at 7am it runs a incremental backup, and weekly it syncs that up to my dedicated box in Michigan. So we're good for backups. There's really no way to fix the lag though. Quadcore with 8G ram should be more than enough. Clearly it is not a problem of power, rather it is a problem of implementation. (aka: notch is a horrible coder)

1. Is it even possible to mine a grass block without silk touch?

2. What would a grass block be doing at level 11?

All I can think of is that it was an inventory glitch but still... Weird

So! A couple things:

1. Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders works great with the RTX 3080! *mwah* chef's kiss

2. Sildur's Shaders DOES NOT play nice (unless you like low FPS jank)

Which is a shame because I find SEUS a little too dark in caves and at night but it's just so damn pretty otherwise (dat water UNF) I can't stop using it.

Also did Optifine hide the VSync option somewhere? I can't seem to find it. Not that I need it but when I was trying Sildur's I thought it might make a difference and it was nowhere to be found.

I built the longest ice boatway in there, and it took me forever to get enough ice blocks for it, but I did it all in Survival.  Dunno about the stone, I don't see all that much, but I've never had trouble gathering stone, I dig mines for fun.  And after I dig out the cobble, I smelt it back to smooth stone, for the XP.

I have an iron golem farm and enough iron to make iron blocks for a full beacon at my base.. I have surplus iron and made nearly all the original the rails before switching to ice.

Quote from: Mr. Analog on January 24, 2021, 06:32:56 PMand enough raw stone to build what I've built already seems like a lot more has been built by others?

I have a super smelter in my base, that is how I made the large amounts of smooth stone and stone bricks I use in most of my builds.. It self fuels with a bamboo farm.

I also have a large villager trading post, I can replace enchanted diamond gear for free for the most part.

I have the following farms on a large scale:

Carrot and potato (used for villager trades)
Slime farm (had to turn it off literally have so much I don't know what to do with it)
Iron Golem Farm (started using it to make iron blocks for beacons)
Kelp and Bamboo farms (mostly used for fuel)
Honey Farm (semi automated) for honey blocks
Mellon and pumpkin farm (more villager trades)
Villager breeder (just takes food and starts producing villagers)
Mob Farms (get various drops like gunpowder, and spider webs)

Might have forgotten some but to build on a large scale I first build large farms to automate. I hate regular mining.

However, I am also near a desert, and have shovels with near full enchantments on them. I can get stacks of sand in minutes..

I have also explored the end and have shulker boxes that make moving supplies around for large builds easy.

It's a more interesting kind of hard, took a long time to build those farms and I spent a lot of time feeding it back into my sorter system as well which consumed most of my iron, take a look at my base and how many hoppers are in there lol.

Yeahhh...  I don't think you understand just how much I like the monotony of digging tunnels.  My mine is three layers deep and 100 x 200 blocks already.  I've got three and a half stacks of iron blocks after consistently using iron for armour.  And I have multiple double chests of smooth stone from all my mining.

To be clear, I like playing Survival and being able to say I built everything in Survival, but I don't care if you switched over to Creative for some or all of your builds.  It's not like we're competing for a high score or something.

Also, my daughter just asked me incredulously, "You still play minecraft?!"

So! I found the perfect combination of looks and performance using the BSL shaders.

Not too dark, not too light, zero lag, no blurring. Simply put this is the shader pack of choice.

I'll add a link later

Man I am so out of the minecraft loop it's not funny. Basically the group of youtubers I watched fell apart and many stopped doing minecraft and I kinda just got bored of it anyhow.

It's funny how I seem to need to watch other people play to keep my interest up in games. Keeps the juices flowing.

Most Minecraft content I get now is from Livestreams and man it gives me the Itch to play. I'd like to be on a more populated server with players in Discord so we can chat while we play.

The two channels I watch are sips_ and MALF (I'll get links to both later) they setup a community invite only server called Dadcraft (search for that on Twitch and you'll likely see somebody on there) it's been a great thing for me to watch early mornings and then catch up on the rest of the VOD after work

I should be playing more this weekend if anyone wants to jump onto Discord and play just let me know!
