Title: Fragapalooza Thread
Post by: Mr. Analog on March 29, 2005, 09:46:24 AM
Fragapalooza will soon once again be upon us, according to the last news post (Mar 11), registration will begin late April.

I know last year was a bit of a bust, but I'll probably still go, even if it's at the Mayfield...

...i wanted to attend last year, but other things arose, but this year i really want to attend, and i will book time off.

What was so crappy last year that you think it was a bust?

The mind-bending HEAT... there were a lot of great things as usual but an early air-conditioner failure and the restriction on coolers in the venue caused network downtime (overheating switches as I recall) and grumpy, smelly nerds.

Well, i hope a bunch of RW members will be attending.

Speakign of which, make this thread a poll, and ask that question..."Do you intended to attend Frag 2005?" :)  I'd really like to know.

Oh, Curtis (TheDruid) is getting married the weekend before

Done and done. Wow, I completely forgot that TheDruid was getting hitched this July (sorry dude!).

Not sure if I will be able to take the days.. As I am starting my new job on the 4th and its not usually good to try and book off time in the first 6 months.

If I can't take the days off I don't think I will attend. I have been really disappointed with the network stability at these events.. for the 4 days the up time is probably only 60 to 70% at best.. I know they get the network switches donated at the last minute but man they really need to engineer a drop in solution to block random DHCP servers from taking out the network, and put some QOS on the Internet connection.

Last year was mostly based on DoS due to Virus Distribution.  I know cause I spent at least 12 hours cleaning peeps computers of viruses.  Unfortuantely, last year we didn't have the cisco managed switches like we had in previous, so we were unable to block such traffic at the switch level.  Hopefully this year we will be able to do something about that (man I hope were back to the cisco stuff).

If only there was a cheap way to make sure everyone's computer was virus clean before they plugged in...

/steps back... hoping the think-tanks start up without his need to start them :P

Simple.. Hand out a free AV CD to every person who registers.. make it part of the registration process to activate your account on the network.. if you don't scan your system you can't register on the page..

Maybe you would copy and past your scan log when you sign in to prove you scanned your system.

Sick a high end server with lots of ram and I large network connection running http://www.clarkconnect.org/ between the network and the internet connection. Get some QOS going, mark all P2P traffic as bulk.

http://www.clamav.net/ can be used as a free command line scanner to hand out and run on everyones system..

If they can get cisco equipment again, maybe set some earlier date to get it by? and block DHCP ?

K two things:

1. Mandatory virus scan would be cool, but how are you going to authorize the network account?  You want us to reserve everyone's MAC address on the network after proof of their Virus Scan?  If so, are you volunteering for the process (we tried this with our labs at work and gave up after the 300th or so computer)?  Just asking as it sounds simple but not so easy to execute.

2. Should post these thoughts on the Frag forums, as I have little to no control on how the event is setup.  I can only react to the problems, vs be proactive as you are suggesting.

1. It would be a loose rule, but remember when you register at the event you are always given your local password. You need to use that to access the internal event page, my idea is to simply require pasting your scan log in on first login.

Some people might not do it, but maybe if this is the only way to register for prizes everyone would do it.

2. I everything in the frag forums seems to fall on deaf ears. Its always about the hardware not arriving or not enough time to setup.. This isn't a casual event anymore.. I don't know what their problem is.

 This just in fellow Fraggers!

Also, get on that forum and try to shut down any Counterstrike Tournaments and support other games, really gotta start splitting that vote, even if it seems futile.

QuoteGreetings,

Fragapalooza 2005!

The Fragapalooza staff would like to update all of you about this year?s event that will once again be at the Mayfield Trade Center from July 21st to 24th with the doors opening at 9 am. Check out the "About" section of the web page for location details and links to maps on how to get there as well as other info on what you need to bring. You will be allowed outside food and drink this year; however you will not be allowed to bring in coolers. We fought hard to get the ?no outside food and beverage? rule abolished so keeping your coolers in your cars or hotel rooms is a small price to pay to keep the food police away.

Registration for Fragapalooza 2005 will open this Wed April 27th. Seating reservations will be a feature again this year to those who have completed the registration process and should be live soon after registration opens. The seat reservation map will show the areas where sponsors and other booths and attractions will be so you will be able to sit in an area most comfortable to your gaming needs.

Official Tournaments will be chosen by polls. Depending on the game and type of tournaments, we will run up to three PC tourneys with a possibility of a 4th console tournament depending on Microsoft Xbox?s involvement. Once again, this year we encourage unofficial tourneys organized by participants and we will do our best to accommodate them in the tourney section of the web page.

We have some great fun things planned for giveaways, door prizes, the infamous ?Wacky tasks? and fun tourneys.

We are looking for volunteers to help with the event again this year. We have seen some great work from our younger volunteers so we lowered the age limit to participate. If you are 18 years of age or older and would like to be apart of the team please send an email to msmith@fragapalooza.ca. All volunteers will get a volunteer t-shirt and be entered into special volunteer prize draws after the end of the event.

Lastly, we will no longer be unable to process direct credit card payments through our secure website. We apologize for this inconvenience however you will still be able to pay through PayPal using a credit card. You do not need to have a PayPal account to do this. As a bonus for those who register early every year, we will draw for an Nvidia video card for the first 200 who complete registration and a draw for an Intel CPU for the first 400 completed registrants. You must have your event fees submitted to fully complete registration and answer a skill testing question correctly in order to qualify. So if you are in the first 200 you get two chances as some lewtz!

Good Luck!

Cheerz!

As stated on the frag site, the reson the other side is cooler is because there is less general seating because of the the areas set aside for tounament play.. hence fewer active computers and players at any time.

Only bonus is that it is somewhat close to the head table so I can run up there with my legit old games for the whacky contestest..

That might be true, but the air conditioners were non-functional for the better part of two days at F2004. I remember Frag 2003, and it was comfortable (cold even, at night), so I'm hoping that things are better this year.

Eh? I thought you were trying to be ironic.

Also, what's the word on our reserve spots? I see the next row over has a bunch of spots cordoned off, but yet not us. Have we fallen from favour?

Additionally, I have taken the week of Frag (and the following week off), I would like to volunteer my l33t skillz for that first week, who should I talk to about that?

No way I'm sitting at the corner. I'm like a magnet for people walking into me (and shopping carts though I doubt those will be present unless they get REALLY creative with the contests).

There will be many battle's. Oh yes, many battle's indeed.

I'm interested in splitting the room melbosa. Also I think I am going to be on the look out for a stealth cooler..

Placing my collapsible cooler in my duffel bag worked OK last year but I think I want to find a better solution.

Should probably look at getting something like this fan, too bad they are out of stock. Might be fun to hook up a USB hub and have 5 of those blowing at once ;)

As much time as you want.  There are always multiple games of everything being played.  Don't have to wait for us to play with either.  Just start up a game and look for a network one already going.

Can also use the local IRC system to arrange a game with anyone.

Well other than when the network is down (most of the first day it always seems) you can game any time you want.. just don't expect everyone around you to want to play the same thing.. There is often a game running for almost any mildly popular game at anytime. The best part is that you can get up from your seat and bitchslap a fool if he ticks you off in game.

It's a social event as well.. You can meet some interesting people. Its one of those times where you meet someone online in a game and you can go over and meet face to face if you want.

As well it is a good evenent to win swag and new hardware at.. there are contests run all through out the event.

I haven't talked to Gil (FP President) yet this year - normally he contacts well before registration about reserving the projectors from NAIT and such (which is what I usually provide in trade for reserved seating area).  But with many of us already registered, seating likely won't be a problem.  Spread out a wee bit - people aren't going to take a single seat with none of their friends nearby, and if we have a few empty seats around during the event then everyone gets more elbow-room.

Also - Intelcrash (sittin in our row a little ways down) is one of my brothers friends.  They always take the section just down the row from us (probably 4 or 5 of them)

As there will once again be a cooler ban thanks to the Mayfield. I would like to point out that Superstore is now stocking several duffel bag style coolers.. These are isolated collapable coolers like the one I had last year but look like duffel bags..

I am thinking of picking one of these up and several cold packs.. I found the ice and water difficult to deal with last year.

I'll probably borrow a little of one of these hotel rooms.  I don't really care if I sleep in my chair or on a bed, but you'll all complain less if I can use one of the showers a few times.

 INTERESTING FRAGA UPDATES!

QuoteGreetings!

Hope you guys are all doing well.

We have extended the early registration to this Sunday June 26th. After that date Registration will be $75 online and at the door. We will not be able to take event T-shirt orders after that date as well. If you have pre-registered you will be able to check in to the event a day early on Wednesday July 20th from noon to 6pm so you can bypass the lines on Thursday July 21st. Please remember also that no coolers will be allowed in the venue during the event. There are also still Fragapalooza Hotel rooms available but they are limited so call in and book soon.

We the staff of Fragapalooza are very excited about this year?s event as we have been working hard to include more game servers and fun tournaments. The network is looking really good this year as D-link has stepped up and included some layer3 equipment which will help things greatly. Bawls has also added a unique touch to this year?s event by supplying a stretch Hummer Limo to escort anyone who wishes to buy any Bawls at Compusmart down the road.

Compusmart would like to make sure they will have enough supply to meet the possible demand. They will be selling cases for $39.95 + GST + Deposit. If you think you will be partaking in this deal let us know and email us how many cases. We will pass that info on to them. We are working possibly getting a few lovely ladies to accompany anyone who makes the trip in the Hummer for stimulating conversation. :)

This credit card transaction will appear on your bill as "PAYPAL *FRAGAPALOOZ".
I noticed that i still had a few bucks in my account from the now defunct Mars Project, so i used that to cover most of it.  Im all set to come...i might have an LCD by then, but im not gonna hold my breath *shrug*

How is parking?  Im gonna have to make 3 trips to the car i think, and most of my gear is sorta heavy.

Parking is fine as long as you know the secret. Everyone tires to park on the side where the main entrance is.

There is a pedway between the hotel and the hall. there are doors on both sides of it, if you drive around to the other side you can park close to the pedway and walk right into the main entrance of the hall.

Although I have noticed more people parking on that side with each year the event is held at the Mayfield.

Notes:
Click on the thumbnail to view a larger version.
Orange is the common over used place to park and where everyone arrives.
Green is the better place to park and unload
The red arrows indicate entry into the hall.

Anyone able to hitch me a lift out to the Mayfield on thursday? If not I'll probably have to get a taxi in. I think I'll also need to stop at Memory Express to get a new video card. My trusty GeForce Ti 4600 doesn't have the right spicyness for me to be able to play Battlefield 2. What I won't do for a well organized artillery strike.

...Man it's a good thing I've been saving up. After this I won't need to buy a new vital computer part for around 3 years.

Oh except OF COURSE for the DRM'ed monitors when Longhorn comes along. I'll get on those RIGHT AWAY! (joking, of course!) :P

 More Info:

QuoteHey Everyone;

This is going out to everyone, but it's most relevant for setup volunteers. Those of you who can make it tomorrow, we'll meet at the Mayfield at 9am. First thing is to pick up the truck and then get all the equipment from storage. We have a truck rented from 10am - 3pm.
We will work Tuesday probably very late (4am+). Stay as long as you can/spare/need to. For Wed. hopefully we troubleshoot and setup registration.
Those of you who work Thursday morning's registration - try and be there before 8am, preferably 7:45 if you can.
One final note; we try to do the very best we can to feed our volunteers. However, sponsorship money has been very, very tight this year, so I must apologize in advance and ask you to take care that you bring money/food/lunches/beverages as needed. I will try to get you something to eat (pizza) for dinner for those who are putting in a monster shift tomorrow and Wed. But at least bring some lunches/snacks and water.
That's all for now. I really appreciate your help. :-)

Cheers!
Mike Smith
VP Fragapalooza
P.S. If anyone who knows a caterer/fast food place who would like to sponsor us for sandwiches - I am all ears. By all means, use your connections as much as you can - for any food for that matter. It's just that we all get so sick of pizza after 4 days (and I happen to like sandwiches:) ). By sponsorship I mean they are willing to give us food for free or very cheap. Otherwise, it's not worth the hassle to arrange for this unless we get it for at least 50% off. If you think you have a valid lead, let me know ASAP via phone (780) 970-7886 to make promotional arrangements.

QuoteWe made a post about the possible seating changes back before registration opened. We get charged per table, so it doesn't make any sense to have empty tables.

I had to make a best-guess when it came to changing the seating...send me a PMSG tonight and I will try and put you guys back together again. Please include the seats you want to have. If I don't hear back from you tonight, it will be too late.

That goes for anyone who got moved today. We try and do the best we can, but sometimes @%&# happens. I will do my best to fix it for you! Smile

For the love of god, i hope you see this message Mr.A or Melbosa, or whoever else wants to spearhead this operation.

Not sure its 100% fixed but the seating doesn't look too bad now.. and there are a bunch of green spots we can shift down too now if we want to bunch up more.

Not having the row extend all the way should make it much easier to move equipment in and out.

Seating still looks an touch bit messed. Looks like Mr. A might have gotten a hold of someone as he's moved down a bit now. Looks like we'll have to make extra sure we agree on where we want to move to if we have to move from our current arrangement. And cross our fingers real hard.

I'm pretty sure I'm ready. Got some Unreal 2004 and once I get a new video card I should have BF2 working for me. As well I've got Call of Duty, Battlefield 1942, and Battlefield Vietnam for side practice and fun. If anyone hasn't seen Shawn of Dead yet I'll bring along the DVD for watching as well.

Hey Ustauk, is that Slipstream disk WinXP Pro with SP2 minus all the unnecessary SP2 crap? If so, is it like an OS image, or is it just a normal slow installation still needed? I'm thinking of doing a rebuild of my system -- it's been like a year, and it's Microsoft, so... -- and I'm thinking maybe I can borrow that CD from you? PS: In case nobody knows, my version of WinXP Pro is legit, bought it at a-computers in Oliver Square... Just looking for time savers, that's all. :)

I'm afraid it contains all of SP2.  What parts of that do you consider crap? Here's instructions on how to create  a slip stream disk, provided you have Nero and a CD burner.  I imagine you could use your legit copy to generate a slipstreamed version, and then use the same key you've always had.  If not, let me know and I'll get you a copy.

Oh, and for anyone who's putting in a new hard drive, installing the OS on it, and gets a message after installation saying could not load OS files ( or something like that ) , check to make sure the os hard drive is set to LBA.  My board was setting the OS drive to CHA or something like that, and the OS was kaking out after installation.  Once I set it manually to LBA, everything worked fine.

I have an XP SP2 disk thats under 130MB including all my drivers.  Its really thin, and i dont recommend it for anybody.

I also have an XP SP2 disk that has most of the essentials and its around 300MB.   All depends on what you want kept from the installation.

My original is a legit XP SP2 disk from the University of Oklahoma (im good friends with the cheif tech guy there), and i have a list of 80 or so unbanned unique keys (as i get the keys for free).  So i can basically hook anyone up with a copy.

 Now, what about foodables?

I want to get some bags of carrots like last time, and maybe some pop, chips and stuff? I have a fridge in my room (booked) so I can store stuff during the day!
