It's crazy how much new stuff keeps getting added.  At some point, I hope to get back into mining and crafting, lately nothing's really been exciting or interesting.

I take it you've been keeping up and playing, Lazy?  Are there any new game mechanics that make it harder to play?  (for instance, I found having to wait for the sword to charge up between swings and having to get used to blocking with the shield at just the right time took a bit of getting used to)

Actually, my video card on my main computer died and the on-board intel ISN'T even good enough to run Minecraft LOL.

I have been keeping track of the updates and updating the server with the .X releases however..

Was working on the END castle walls (https://rwov.contentcubby.ca/#/11/64/-4/-1/minecraft%20-%20end/end) last  however this new update adds some interesting new blocks and mobs so it might get me back in the game when releases.. Might have to play on one of our other computers however LOL.

Using different textures for the different ores so that people with colour blindness can identify them easier, that's smart. They should do that for other blocks where only the colour differs.

That change to our generation, I dunno if I like that. Mining will become much more about multiple levels than a large spread on level 10...

I like that the lower levels get new block types thus making it MORE than just a deeper level. Also, as far as mining, it looks like we will get a lot more open surface areas to explore in the larger open areas. It is a big change.

Also all of this basically makes it 100% worth it or necessary to start a new world to access all the new content.

For sure! So far I've been using texture packs to combat this problem for years, finally I can go back to vanilla!

Yeah I'm not too keen on the new ore distribution. My largest source of building blocks and coal comes from strip mining at low levels... guess I'll have to make multiple mines.

Opposite for me, I like the focus on mining and the under ground making it more interesting.. Might have to learn what levels to optimize specific resources but other than that I welcome the more interesting things to discover.

The update is being broken into two updates, however if you want in update 1 you can enable the update 2 features in advance which contain world generation...

1. Update the existing world with update 1 then do a world reset for update 2
2. Do a world reset install update 1 with the new world gen data pack and hope for the best
3. Do nothing till update 2 and do a world reset then.

The world gen is possibly the biggest change over all.. Not sure a world reset is worth it without getting the complete new world gen.

I am super annoyed that world generation doesn't change till part 2 (or via a datapack that may change).. That for me is the biggest reason to start a clean world when part 2 is released.

But again I am open to suggestions.

So the new update dropped are we going to update the current server or are we going to create a new world?

I'm curious about when we get the rest of the update of course but who knows how far away that is.

My vote is to update the current map that way we at least get the new blocks n stuff

Looks like the vanila tweaks data packs have been updated so those QoL fixes can be applied... Not sure about some of the other data packs however.

Haven't been able to find out if Overviewer will work or not just yet.

I may look into this on the weekend but it might be a bit longer.

As a lot of the current map has been explored you would have to go very far out to find new blocks or I GUESS? deeper?

This is one thing I haven't researched.. Can we even update the current world given the new depth changes?

I've been doing some mining, so I've come across some of the new blocks such as deepslate and tuff, as well as copper ore.  I haven't been taking screenshots of these, as they look a bit weird at the moment as my texturepack (pureBDcraft) hasn't been updated to 1.17 yet.

I've been mining at y = {9,10} and it's been pretty rewarding.  I tested using without fortune, and in about half an hour I'd amassed 96 copper, 230 iron, ~500 each of coal and redstone, 157 lapis lazuli, 18 diamonds, and 21 emeralds.  The emeralds definitely seem a lot more common now.

I haven't come across any caves yet, just a few abandoned mineshafts.

edit:  I just realized that while I crafted a non-fortune pickaxe to use for the mining, I forgot to equip it, so those results were with fortune 2, and not as rewarding as I'd thought. Though the emerald count still seems far higher than before.

edit2: I just read that the new cave systems can't spawn in normal worlds, so I guess I won't look too hard for them then.

They split the update into two parts, while this update contained new mobs, block and items etc. They moved NEARLY all of the new terrain generation changes to the next update, hence why we didn't reset the server map. You may find Geodes generating however along with those other new blocks you discovered.. Glow berries may be found in some mine chests and the wondering trader may have new items.
