Shaw's faster upload speeds

I switched last month to the new Shaw Fibre+ Gig plan, from my old Shaw 300 plan.  It was advertised as 1000Mbps down 25Mbps up (piddling up speed, I know), as compared to 300 down / 15 up that I had.  I made the switch because I wanted to take advantage of Shaw Mobile's $0 By The Gig plan for my youngest, who barely uses any data and will always be in the Shaw service area.  Saved us $45 a month.

It was a painful process because the customer service rep on the phone didn't listen when I said I needed my modem to be left bridged and that I couldn't bridge the old modem myself.  But that eventually got sorted out (meaning I crawled around and rewired things and switched all the wireless devices over to the default Shaw SSID for a few days, then switched it all back when the new modem came).

Anyway, last week a coworker had noticed Shaw was advertising 1000 down / 100 up for new customers, and I lamented my slow speed.  Well, turns out they turned it up for existing customers, too, so now I have 1000/100 on my internet pipe.

Well, pretty close.

Yeah seems the North end is getting it before the south. I have a buddy in Castledowns that got the 1000/100 but I haven't gotten it yet here in Summerside.  Shaw support told be by end of October all of Edmonton will have the new speeds.

I'm still at 300 down, but for me that's more than enough.

Yeah, for me it's more about the upload speed, because I now have a half dozen users that use my plex server remotely.

Dang skippy. I may have to bug them. I'd like a ipv6 capable modem too. They say they can't/won't do ipv6 for my older modem but the newer bluecurve and on ones do. But a lot more upload? eff yeah.

My plan is the older "My Internet 300" plan, so like only 16mbps.

You'll likely have to sign a two year contract, but you might find the price the same or better for better speeds.

I'm already on a 2 year contract. They've let me extend it in the past as well when changing my plan.

But the current 300mbps plan is more than I'm paying right now. I'm paying $94.50 after tax etc. $113 - promo + tax. So my promo price is rather nice compared to what they have now. they are taking 24$ off rather than the current $10.

So my plan was about to expire and they've been hassling me for a while to sign a new one, so I did (a day before starlink happened lololol).

They gave me 600mbps/20mbps for $95 (only slightly higher than what I was paying). Which is strange. Their site doesn't even list the 600mbps plan anymore. But it is like $5 less than the new 300mb plan so? BUT The new plans all get 100mbps up. So I'm tempted to "side grade" over to the new 300mbps or 750mbps plan.

At any rate: my new speeds

I'm liking the new lower latency. The new docsis stuff is pretty good.

They keep pumping up the minimum so there is NEVER a cheaper option. All the big ISPs are doing it.

Oh, did you all know that Shaw Mobile will give you "free" unlimited calling/text lines if you have a qualifying internet package? I was approved for three, but just grabbed two for using in my work dev phones. What's normally a $15+/mo fee each, I get for free. Plans with LTE are also discounted fairly decently. Thinking about switching my current $60/mo freedom plan over to a $45/mo shaw plan for more data, but a few less features that I no longer need. If you have a Fiber+ Gig plan you get the same mobile plan for $25 instead. Talk about a good deal.

Yeah, I have a couple of free By The Gig phone plans through Shaw.  One for my youngest, who is always around wifi, one for my mom, who can't even remember how to answer a call on her phone.  They're literally $0 for the plan, and then $10 every three months for one gig of data (like I said, my youngest is always on wifi so never uses data).

I'm on the Fibre+ Gig plan, because why the @%&# not, right?  I used to download one episode of a tv show in the time it took to get a drink, now I download the whole season in that same time.  But the reason I _actually_ switched was to finally get decent upload speeds - 100Mbps means I don't have troubles when there's five people streaming their work / school while another five are watching shows from my Plex server.  I still have cable, too, because of hockey games, so my total is $195 plus tax ($204.75 with tax).
