So, the idea of a hub world server has come up a few times and as we're getting closer to doing it I've elected myself to build the thing with World Edit (or similar tool)
I'll probably either put it in a void or in space, but the question is: what should it look like?
Some other considerations:
- Room to Grow? I know we're going to start with 2 servers, but should it be big enough to handle more?
- Portals? Like Portal Frame portals? Portal Portals? Link books? What do the portals look like
I have a few ideas of my own but I need those questions answered first :)
Oh yeah, for at least one of the designs I'm thinking about using server textures, it should only be active on the hub server world right?
I don't know how this all works :)
I do not yet know what the portals look like. I think they might be like nether portals, but I haven't actually checked.
I think you can have server textures per server, and the hub world would be its own server iirc.
Also you don't have to go with my suggestion of a void world. If you can make something awesome, just do it.
But room to grow could be nice.
I figure even it's command blocks I can work something together.
Maybe I can make something that looks like Portal (the game) with various rooms that lead to other worlds
There wouldn't be any puzzles per se, it would just look ... Aperture Science-y
But I'm up for all sorts of ideas. I rather like the void (or space) because then no one would be tempted to play on the hub world. Ideally it will be a limited size to reduce strain.
Out in space? Gotta do the Ark! aka Nerva Beacon. Just, no silverfish on the station, please.
DON'T TEMPT ME
I was already thinking big spaceship and the first two that came to mind were the Cygnus and the ARK from STARLOST
Which knowing me I'd actually goddamn build LOL
haha
Nerva Beacon is easy, though, it just needs one-eighth of a circular hallway and three rooms (control, secondary control, and a sleeping room).
You didn't get my silverfish comment? They remind me of the cybermats (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Cybermat) every time they attack me.
I totally missed it haha
But yeah could add some Jeffs for fun ;)
Oh yeah, I never got around to this last weekend
But I will soon
I was thinking floating marble gazebos with walkways interconnecting them.
Or a hall of doors, with the new teleport tricks to make all but the active doors make you exit the opposite door cartoon style.
I saw a video today on one of the new snapshots (14w08a) which basically makes teleports look seamless using command blocks (Minecraft Antichamber map (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cffAXpNbiFE)) that sparked a lot of ideas...
I really do like the idea of having some kind of floating transit hub world
I just have to see if I have to custom texture map the sky if I want it to look like it's constantly night, so it looks like it's in space.
Just getting my feet wet with custom world generation
Rip the night sky from this http://imgur.com/a/Wgmy8
Coooooooooooool
Ok, re-opening this topic!
So! At Fraga I got familliar with MCEdit and feel a lot more comfortable with it and since Tom will be updating our worlds to 1.7.10 I'm going to get back into this long overdue task.
I was thinking something spacy as we had talked about before...
Do you guys have any ideas you'd like to see for a hub world?

White Roman pillar buildings on floating chunks of earth in space.
I like that!
I had created something similar at fraga
If it's space-y, it should be Nerva Beacon. You know, a rounded corridor with windows looking out at the night sky with occasional access to chambers on the inside of the round ring. I don't know how easy or hard that would be to do, though.

Or the white pillared buildings would be cool, too, especially if there are glass-encased bridges between them.
So many great ideas. Maybe I'll prototype both
Thing is, there's really only two portals on the hub world for now, right?
Yup, but still,we can have a great looking way to link the maps
And other server instances can be linked up dynamically.
I have a bukkit server as well, though it's hosted locally at the moment, but perhaps one day I'll find a better home for it.

The new setup will be using bungeecord for the linking, and spigot for the server mod. I'm not sure if spigot is 100% compatible, but it is a fork of bukkit, most plugins work.
I've slapped my mc servers on digitalocean 10/mo or 20/mo servers mostly because my local internet seems to be a little too unstable for a constant service.
I just want to confirm that we can use portal blocks to do the server transfer
Also I think I want to put together a custom server pack, will look at how crazy to it tonight.

I think any solid block is ok to use as the portal frame.
Do you mean end portal blocks? that might be interesting...
Yeah that's what I was thinking - they kind of look like stars
