Title: THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD
Post by: Melbosa on March 03, 2017, 10:52:28 AM

Got a 10!  Anyone else interested in this game?  I am so glad I kept my Wii U, cause in typical Nintendo fashion, they have shorted the supply of the Switch for consumers.

I swore off pre-ordering after No Man's Sky

After seeing it in action now and also finding out that there's very little difference between the Wii U and Switch version I'm thinking of picking it up this weekend.

It really breaks from the Zelda formula
- No Tutorial
- No linear dungeons
- VASTLY open world

Sounds like my kinda game

FYI for those who are interested in what the differences are:
Wii U resolution: 720p
Switch resolution: 900p (when docked)
Switch adds more atmospheric sounds
Switch has a slightly better draw distance

Both run at a sluggish 30 fps
Both have slowdown issues in roughly the same spots

I'm thinking of ordering from Amazon now.  With Prime they are offering 20% off all Pre-Orders and New Releases!

Breath of the Wild was released for Wii U?  I thought Nintendo said there'd be no more games created for the Wii U?

It'll probably be Splatoon 2 that causes my household to get a Switch...

Dang son, that sounds like a good idea (Prime bros *high five*... my house is full of Amazon boxes)

Breath of the Wild was in development hell for the Wii U for a long time and then ported to the Switch architecture (I suspect some parallel development)

BE FOREWARNED! Nintendo has not yet decided on it's pricing model for online play, they are going the route of XBox Live Gold / Playstation Pass, they haven't worked out what the pricing scheme is yet.

I'm holding off on the Switch until I see more games I want to play (in the meantime ... gently strokes GeForce 1080 Ti ... OW! HOT)

Nice.  I have to hit up a Petro on the way home to get some Amazon gift certs for my Points, and then I'm putting in my Order as well.

SCORE!

FYI the min delivery is 2 days, I expect they are a bit backed up with orders (even with the Wii U version)

I'm genuinely looking forward to this, now to try and avoid any further livestreams spoiling it

Spoiler
I caught one stream briefly last night where a guy was in a "dungeon" which was like a giant steampunk version of an AT-AT from Star Wars wandering a desert... Link was wearing a female (Gerudo? not sure) outfit because apparently he would overheat in the desert and that was the only light clothing available to him

I still have to play Twilight Princess HD augh...

I like that this one is set in the future, and HiRule {sp?} is a completely new world.  Supposedly the main quest line is to figure out what happened to the Princess, and only after about 40h of main story play will you find out what happened.  Otherwise I've heard that there is probably 110h of full game play in the game - 110H F'n HOURS!  That is insane.

Yeah, it's intriguing for sure.

You should see some of the early designs, it had Link wearing a hoodie, riding a motorcycle and wielding a "flying v" guitar it's SO BAD... (not quite FFXV levels but still...)

Equipment also has durability, so you'll find a weapon and it will only last so long.

My guess is that there will be a point where you find the iconic hero gear and it won't break. It does make me wonder if there are weapon mods / crafting... (50s rock n' roll plays silently in my head)

Supposed to be limited crafting in the game, not a lot, but not a little.

Saw some interesting game play; One that struck me is really neat is if you swing a metal weapon while it is storming out you could accidentally get hit by lightning... and this also applies to the enemies you fight as well.

Also armor you are wearing... though it's a bit fantastical as the GIFset I saw that showed that feature had Link running near large stone pillars

*Morbo Voice* LIGHTNING DOES NOT WORK THAT WAY

Also I feel like I should set up my console capture device for this, but I don't want to rewire this room.

I was playing with OBS this morning for NO REASON what so ever. Turns out my setup doesn't have proper support for hardware encoding for streaming :( and holy hell does it use a lot of cpu to encode. 300%+ Now, this is an older AMD cpu, so its pretty slow compared to newer cpus, but sheesh. Gaming while streaming on this box is probably not wise. I might have to try at some point but sheesh. If I were to get into it seriously, I'd have to use a dedicated device like the AVIO dongles.

I bought an AVerMedia portable for console capture, you can use it for streaming PC as well.

OBS sucks a lot of CPU and required a lot of fiddling to get just right, in fact one of the reasons why I couldn't stream much Fallout 4 initially was input lag. I also found it added input lag to things like SAI / ClipStudioPaint. I've since played around with various settings and lowering your output resolution helps a lot (even though downscaling seems like it should take more CPU)

Oddly enough using GeForce ShadowPlay didn't take as big of a bite out of my CPU as OBS, you have to be logged into GeForce Experience to use it HOWEVER you can use nVidia capture through OBS which mostly seems to be OK. For game streams I tend to use ShadowPlay for everything else OBS.

I have a license for AVerMedia but the UI is a bit dense, OBS is so clean and easy to use in comparison, mostly because it's a clunkier UI I think. But also I've been using OBS for a few years now so it's like second nature I guess.

It looks like I might be able to use hw encoding if I play with the advanced ffmpeg options... We'll see if I bother to do such things. lol. My card is based on the old 290 radeon, which is based on the 7xxx chips... And it might not have a new enough video encoder engine in it. So we'll see. Later on a Nvidia 980/1070/1080 might be in my future. Maybe when I build a new workstation rig (likely with a Ryzen R7 1700 or 1800x, possibly dual socket!). That's MONTHS down the line though.

I'm surprised OBS would add any lag, unless you're playing through the OBS display, which I'd advise against? I think hdmi splitters are pretty cheap?

OBS takes some fiddling with to get just right, even with a Core i7 / 1080 Ti.

NEVER play through the stream output window, most of the time it's sitting on my other monitor or minimised so I don't see it at all. Really the only time I use OBS is if I want to add overlays or have more control over what people are seeing otherwise ShadowPlay is good enough.

Have you tried a live FB stream from ShadowPlay yet?  Or that is too public for what you are doing (and its live I guess which has its own challenges)?

It's funny actually I've pasted links to livestreams on Facebook but the people there are less interested than people from my other social circles, though I know for a fact my mom was pretty into the GTAV playthrough I did a while back (I wish I had saved those VODs!)

In general you can find me on Twitch or Picarto or just go to my YouTube channel and see uploads from past streams.

To be fair though I haven't streamed in a long time, just been too bleh to do it, but I really should get back into the habit. It's a lot of fun

Indeed. We shall see how things go. I have a couple big expenditures to get through first. New roof. Then Baby. Good times.

Yeah, "baby" isn't an expenditure, it's an ongoing financial drain.  Every time you think you've caught up, something new comes along.  Ask Lazy :P

I'm wondering whether we should get Breath Of The Wild for the Wii U here, or whether I should be saving my pennies and buying a Switch.

There are some initial big ones. The ongoing expenses I'm sure we can handle baring some strange health or special needs stuff. (not expecting anything, but given family history, its possible)

There are some major quality control issues they need to work out with the hardware (I'm sure everybody's seen the dead pixels story (https://hardware.slashdot.org/story/17/03/06/2246243/nintendo-switch-owners-complain-about-dead-pixels-nintendo-says-theyre-normal) by now) the dearth of games is a killer as well, the lack of online anything is also a problem.

TBH I'm glad I cancelled my pre-order, will review again next Winter.

I got my copy of Breath of the Wild yesterday, I had things to do after work so I had to put it off, hopefully I can get into it tonight

I just don't know. The online stuff still includes friend codes. Games, saves AND accounts are locked to individual consoles. Want to sign into multiple consoles? NOPE! Gotta sign out and detach first.

The joycons are DUMB af. Maybe if they bring out a pair that aren't asymmetrical I'd be more likely to like them.

So many missteps.

I suspect a lot of "pro" controllers will get sold this generation. Also I realized the Joycons were small but I didn't realize how small until I saw an unboxing that used a quarter for scale.

I actually have a friend who when they got theirs accidentally docked the controllers backwards, which is easy enough to do but hard to undo.

Heck yeah!

Almost a 30 min update before I got rolling, nearly done the tutorial. This is a very different Zelda game, I love it

My fav wasn't there and I can't find the video but BASICALLY you get a power early on where you can stop time and then using a weapon add kinetic energy to world objects (like boulders) so you can move 'em

You can also chop trees down with an axe

So some smart person put the two mechanics together, chop tree down, stop time, add kinetic energy, jump onto log, crouch... ZOOM!

Log: The Only Way to Fly

Some more little things you can do in the game and a few repeats: http://ca.ign.com/videos/2017/04/28/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-46-tiny-mind-blowing-details

Just the thought to put some of these into the game blows me away.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll be buying a Switch and Breath of the Wild for my youngest in June (his birthday).  The game's visuals look okay, maybe the videos don't do it justice.  But all these little well-thought-out bits is what will make it a great game.  Just like Lego City Undercover or Lego Dimensions (although the latter costs a lot for new figures).

AMAZING. What a world!

And shocking that motorboating is in a family-friendly game ;)

Luckily Nintendo realizes that many of us would rather have slightly poor textured fun and flexible gameplay over oops-we-fell-into-the-uncanny-valley uber-GFX any day!

Its fun for sure... but it has some timeless (and needlessly frustrating) Nintendo plat-former puzzle mechanics that still piss me off.  But they are at least far and inbetween.

Now if just my damn horse would figure out how to path properly up and down a mountainous area I would be fully happy with this game (despite those puzzles).  I should take a video of me trying to navigate on my horse in these places... my wife was laughing at how badly I'd be trying to gallop and have my horse rear due to collision detection of some random object that he could easily run over.

Also I can now say for certain, after playing this on a friend's switch for a few hours and on my own Wii U, there is virtually no difference between the two at 1080p.

@Melbosa just let the horse do the work, they actually have AI and generally follow paths

hmm I was playing like I was driving a car... Maybe I'll try that. It's one of the huge pet peeves I have with the game.

Yeah! That's how I was playing at first, turns out you can just let the horse do its thing and only give it nudges / spurs / a calming pat when you need to

If you ever wondered how people were fighting on horseback it's because they trust their ride
