Title: Newyears Fireworks Party?
Post by: Tom on December 21, 2012, 03:20:30 PM
Was wondering if anyone wanted to have a massive minecraft fireworks party for newyears? :)

I saw some cool randomizers setup to fire off a crap load of fireworks, and it might be interesting to set up :D

Sounds fun but I'll be away from the compooter that night :)

WAT? How dare you have a life! ;)

Could schedule it for the day before or the day after. :) it'd have been awesome to actually have it right on newyears eve night. But I didn't really expect that to happen.

We'll see what's goin' on I guess

I like the idea but won't be available on New Year's Eve for sure.  Around here, they do family fireworks starting around 8:30pm.

The day before or the day after would be cool.  If we do it, someone with decent hardware has to record it, though.

I've been gathering resources to make fireworks over at Grand Central Terminal (not to be confused with Grand Central Station, which is underground).

Remember, the explosions only happen if you make a firework star and put it in your firework rocket when you're crafting your firework rocket.

Firework stars are gunpowder + dye and will explode the colour of the dye.  You can also add glowstone dust, feathers, gold nuggets, or even diamonds to the firework star to make them burst in certain patterns.  The more gunpowder, the bigger the explosion.

Once you have your firework star made, firework rockets are firework star on top of paper on top of gunpowder.  The more gunpowder, the higher the rocket goes before exploding.  You can also put more than firework star in the rocket and get multiple explosions.

Rockets can be fired by right-clicking the ground with them, or by being dispensed.  If we're going for a real show, we should set up a few dispensers with buttons, or pressure plates to run across!  I know a guy who has a few extra bows to make dispensers with >cough<

Maybe we could set up some redstone randomizers \o/

I may be on for this, I think I'll be changing new years plans, not sure yet

Yeah, just make sure you don't expect me to be on on New Year's Eve, as I definitely won't be! :P  We could do it the 30th, though, that'd be cool?

Man, I'm already jumping ahead and planning out what types of fireworks to make and what types of groupings to fire them off in!  You know, things like three rockets with flight duration 1 burst 1, then one rocket with flight 2 burst 2 fired 10 ticks later.  Just like real fireworks where they have stuff all timed!

We should make some bleachers near spawn and turn on snow just before the fireworks start so it can be like a good Canadian new year's!

Anyway, off to a Christmas family party.

We need more gunpowder to make lots of fireworks.  So I tried making a mob spawning room after watching a tutorial.  It didn't work :(  I've done a bunch of creeper hunting and gotten some more, but nowadays they don't always drop gunpowder (and sometimes they drop multiple).

I wonder how many netherstars we should try and collect :o
Title: Re: Newyears Fireworks Party?
Post by: Thorin on December 26, 2012, 07:48:16 PM
The nether star isn't used in fireworks, just in beacons.  So if we're talking about fireworks (since that's this thread), we won't need any nether stars.

We need a bunch of blaze powder to make fire charges to make large explosion fireworks.  The fire charges also require gunpowder, so there's another need for gunpowder.

Gunpowder takes way too long to gather now that creepers don't always drop it.

I've got 96 firework rockets made:

4 Flower groups (each group is 3 level I green small ball rockets + 1 level II red large ball rocket)

4 Sparkling Flower groups (each group is 3 level I green small ball rockets + 1 level II yellow large ball crackling rocket)

4 Stars groups (each group is 2 level I yellow star shape rockets + 2 level II blue star shape rockets)

4 Trailing Stars groups (each group is 2 level I yellow star shape rockets + 2 level II blue star shape trailing rockets)

4 Popcorn Wall groups (each group is 4 level I white burst crackling rockets)

4 Sky Giants groups (each group is 1 level III white-fade-to-blue large ball rocket + 1 level III blue-fade-to-yellow large ball rocket + 1 level III yellow-fade-to-red large ball rocket + 1 level III red-fade-to-white large ball rocket)

I have also erected some temporary viewing stands: http://mc.tomasu.org/#/96/64/48/max/0/0 (if it doesn't show, use: http://tomasu.org:8123/?worldname=righteouswrath&mapname=surface&zoom=6&x=96&y=64&z=48).

No creeper-head fireworks yet, and I'm pretty much out of paper and gunpowder for now.  I've used over six stacks of gunpowder so far!  Oh, and I had to go to Pants's blaze farm to collect blaze rods to make blaze powder to make the large ball rockets.  I have to say, it took me a couple of tries to get a hang of the Crusher / Reset buttons, but once I figured out what did what it worked like a charm!

where do you want it gathered?

There should be nearly 30 gunpowder in the chest at Grand Central

I have more but running Minecraft in browser was getting ... unstable.

In the chest at Grand Central is a good place :)  Thank you, maybe I'll put together some level II rockets.  I need to start thinking about the firing mechanisms.  Do you have Fraps installed yet?

What you need is a kilogram-sized Dairy Milk chocolate bar, like my son got.  It's well over a foot, possibly two feet long.  Nibble on that and you're bound to have energy!  And when the spike drops and you feel loagey, eat more!

Probably not good for the waistline, but hey, holidays.

Hmm, so here I am about to log in to Usamot...

Lets do this 9pm MST Jan 1st, 2013.  I just need someone to record.  I'm still busy putting together all the launching dispensers (although that shouldn't take more than an hour, I'm down to running the redstone).  And then I'll make more fireworks with however much gunpowder and paper I have (I think I have two and a half stacks more gunpowder now).

goddammit, 28 of my firework rockets went missing!  I'm going to /give myself the required gunpowder, paper, colours, and fire charges to re-create them.

this sucks.

I really don't know, all I know is I had four of every kind for a total of ninety-six, and today I only had sixty-eight.  Anyway, all fixed now.

I am completely ready for this - I have built grandstands, I have built a launch house to launch the fireworks from, I have crafted one hundred and seventy two fireworks of various kinds.  All I need is someone to record it for me, since I'll be in the launch house.

The grandstands are at x: +100, z: +53 (http://tomasu.org:8123/?worldname=righteouswrath&mapname=surface&zoom=6&x=100&y=64&z=53)

So...  who will be on at 9pm MST Jan 1, 2013?

Spawning in the fireworks isn't that easy.  There are too many colour combinations, so you have to spawn in the components and put them together.  Here was my supply list: 574 gunpowder, 168 paper, 42 fire charge, 56 gold nugget, 28 feather, 35 glowstone dust, 14 diamond, 42 cactus green, 21 rose red, 49 dandelion yellow, 42 lapis lazuli, and 42 bonemeal.  Originally I actually collected all that in SMP (well, some of the gunpowder came from other people).  It took longer than you might imagine...  Good thing I hoard everything so I had some of it already (mostly the colours).

Video is edited and currently uploading.

Apparently you can't do overlay titles in Windows Live Movie Maker without hacking, so I guess I'll look into getting Sony Vegas set up or something for future videos (I made a video title card for this I will edit it later)

Cheers!

I like the added music, that was awesome!  Glad to see it worked out alright, too, even though some of the rockets exploded inside the launch house.  Which was because I put a roof in the wrong spot.  I fixed that.

I think it looked pretty good, though next time I will be closer to the action I think :D

How many stacks of diamond do you have? LOL

But if that IS too tedious make a massive mob farm (or use the one near spawn)

B-)
Title: Re: Newyears Fireworks Party?
Post by: Thorin on January 02, 2013, 09:34:50 AM
I tried making a mob farm but it didn't work for me.  Apparently normal mob farms are my kryptonite.  I tried using the one by spawn, but all the creeper drops kept getting burned up in the lava instead of being carried down to me by the water.  That was kinda frustrating.  I do want to try again with the mob farm, maybe I need to watch a tutorial video on it or something.

And I'm down to about six stacks of diamonds.

Do you mean the lava near where you stand?
Title: Re: Newyears Fireworks Party?
Post by: Thorin on January 02, 2013, 10:35:24 AM
Yeah, the mobs spawn on higher levels, then fall down to the bottom level into water, the water carries the mobs into lava blades (lava suspended over signs above the water), the mobs burn in the lava blades, then when they die their items drop.  For some reason the creeper drops jump into the air a bit and hit the lava.  The skeleton and zombie drops always fall down, the spider drops are sometimes in the air, if the spider was jumping when it died.
