Title: Good old cards...
Post by: Melbosa on August 20, 2005, 02:25:42 AM
So whos into the Texas or Ohmaha games?

Been playing at a friend's house the last couple of weeks and really starting to enjoy the game.  Still like strait up Poker, but have been converted to these as well.

If members are interested, I would love to join in a game with some locals, or even internet play if we can find a free, nice venue.

TheDruid and I have been wanting to setup a bi-weekly/monthly $20 buy in poker game for the winter.  Could be the start of a good group

$20 is fine by me :)

I personally would like a $5 buy in to begin with and then can buy as you go out in $5 increments.  That way we can get more players, but chances if a $20 buyin over the night still exist.  Makes the chips in the poker sets that Mr. Analog and I have devide nicely as well.  With a low blind of 5c and a high blind of 10c, money still moves, just not so fast as to get stupidly over your head.

Besides its more for the fun of it.  If you want it to be a way to make money, go to the casinos, IMHO.

The secret about the $20 buy in is this...

Suppose you have 4 people, you take everyones $20, and split the chips in to 4 equal amounts.  Everyone has lots of chips and you dont have to worry about chips being worth $0.05 or $0.10..they can still be worth the fictional 10,20,50,100,1000,5000 ...works beautiful and allow for a lot more action as everyone has more chips.

...another small addition (thats rather important).

You take $5 (or enough to cover) from everybodies "buy in" and it goes to pizza.

Winner takes all, nobody is allowed to "cash in" *angeryly looks over at AdamS*

Time is important.  A good game of poker set on the system i have read above takes 4-8 hours assuming people play ... uh ... maturely.  Ive played in a game where its taken over 8 hours (8 people, $40 buy in), and it was a riot.  Some of the best poker i have ever played.

You need a place outside of distraction for the "losers" to go.  Nothing worse then having the Xbox/PS2 going and having people bail on the game to "do something different"

..sounds a little strict, sure, but its a great way to play when you got the right people and the time set aside.

I got a 750+ piece clay poker set ready and waiting. Im "All In" for a $20 winner takes all buy in. Be a great alternative to D&D when we cant get the whole gang organized into a session. We would only need a few RW ppl, and i know a bunch of ppl who would be willing to jump in on a "pick-up" game when needed.

I prefer hold'em, but i would pretty much be up for anything. Im not looking to make money (thats what a casino is for) but id rather put up a little dough, just to ensure the play stays "mature".

"funny money" tends to end up 10K bets on a king high card... I'd rather have something to lose in those situations... makes winning a hand more satisfactory. But then again i dont want to bust the bank either... bills gotta be paid, $20 its standard "entertainment fee" IMO

Im also up for taking the buy in, and putting a bit towards food (pizza etc.). So 6 guys in @ $20 = $120, - $30 for food = $90 for the winner. Not bad for a fun night of play.

Im up for hosting, Im just 10 blocks south on victoria trail from layzybones. assuming standard rotation ;)

Between Layzybones, Shayne, Mr A., Silver Surfer and myself, I think we got claierview covered. Theres also gateway BTW... their tables are setup for poker play.

Ever play 5 card draw Darren?  similar, but better, more betting, lots of strategy.   Very "party friendly".

Post by: Melbosa on August 22, 2005, 04:26:08 PM
Yeah that's 5 in the hand, and draws (sometimes) from the dealer, as well as wildcards (sometimes), right?

Im sure you knew, i was more or less asking Darren, as Texas and Draw are similar in that you make a "poker hand" with 5 cards.  The rest of Texas is really just "details" that are reasily understood in 2 hands.

I jsut dont think a person who has no idea of what a "flush" is would enjoy losing their $20 *dead money*

:)

Was making sure I understood the terms.  I have played "5 card draw" for many years, but always just called it Poker.

I'll just invest a few hours at the VLTs this week to "catch up on the basics"... Flush, Straight, Flush Straight, Royal Straight... which one's higher again?  ;)

lol I think you mean Straight Flush and Royal Flush

Although I think in Texas and Ohmaha, Ace is only high card (can't be a 1), no?

By "lol" I guess you are (correctly) presuming I was joking. :)

And from what I have seen/heard/experienced, Ace Is High is the default, unless Dealer's Choice sets some non-standard rules (e.g. one-eyed Jacks are wild, etc.)

I figure we all just pool our opinions together along with $20 or whatever, and go easy on the newbs/slow learners (myself mostly included in that).

(me enquiring @ 6:45 pm Tuesday) So is there a specific day confirmed yet? Friday night? Saturday night? Even if only a few of us make it, might turn into a nice regular thing to do :)

Looks like Friday may be the better day anyway... might be a little too ambitious to host a game on Sat. after returning from a disc tourney that?s located an hrs drive away.

So who's in for Friday (tomorrow)? We have 3 slots filled so far... looking for at least 2-3 more

Well, alternatively, we could watch movies until 9:30, and then I can drive you up to the Druid's, since Surfer said he can't make it until 10:00 anyways, or we could hold DVD night at the Druid's prior to Poker Night :)  Mr. Dirt could hitch the bus to my place, and I could then drive me and him up that way.  Up to you guys.  I may stick around to watch for a bit, but I'm not really interested in playing.

Me too. Hey I did not buy out. I stayed until the end. And I lost everything. That was another game where there was winner, and second place gets 10 bucks.

I used to play some poker. Mainly a variation of Big Two (played with some chineese friends years ago).
