To my understanding its a recreation of the original site for nostalgic purposes.

Snagged this from the website...

"This is a FAN SITE. It has been created to remind us, the community, that we were part of a wonderful game, and we miss it terribly. It's in my greatest hope that this will be seen by someone that could influence the return of or game. This site is not affiliated with NCSoft, Cryptic or Paragon Studios. It is privately funded and not used for monatary gains. All graphics, videos, and sounds contained within remain the property of their copyright holders."

"City of Titans (CoH inspired MMO)" = the closest thing, probably

Yeah, pretty much all of us have a soft spot in our hearts for that damn game, and the time we were all playing it...

I resemble the remarks shared in the handful of comments.

PLEASE OH PLEASE NCSOFT learn from Paramount/StarTrek -- Don't Be An Evil Supervillain Dick! Just act like you don't know they exist, it is not even possibly taking any profit away from your existing/new ventures with the IP...

https://techraptor.net/content/city-of-heroes-goes-rogue-once-more-multiple-servers-up-and-running

The Homecoming Team has posted a note on their official forums** regarding the state of the servers and the cost to run them. In short, anyone with the hardware that includes a modern processor, 64 cores, 96GB of memory and a stable connection can theoretically add to the game?s servers. The Homecoming Team, based in Amsterdam, posted the following specs for themselves.

1x Auth Server (4 cores, 8GB RAM)
1x Web Server (4 cores, 8GB RAM)
4x DB Servers (6 cores, 16GB RAM) (One per shard)
5x Big Mapservers (32 cores, 64GB RAM)
4x Small Mapservers (16 cores, 32GB RAM)
The cost for running these servers is apparently $4,700 a month, and for the Homecoming Team, it is about at the limit of what they can do to keep the game alive.

O_O We?re on 31,500 accounts, 107,183 characters, and we currently have just under 3,000 people online.

Nice recap of recent events: https://massivelyop.com/2019/05/06/city-of-heroes-homecoming-rogue-servers-will-offer-character-transfers-after-all/, scroll to the bottom of the article for the last couple of weeks of stuffs.

I pulled this topic out of Archives to let it live in the Present.

On topic, if they ever do release a stable, open and private source installer for a Server, I have the hardware and internet to host it for the RW community.  As it stands today from what I am reading, the numerous projects aren't completely there yet, but we may see this in 2019/2020, so here's hopin'!

Yikes...

When NCsoft closed Tabula Rasa in 2007, a group of devoted players banded together to code a server for it. It was called Infinite Rasa and it developed things in the open, with a project website and forum. The overall architecture was being discussed publicly and there was a buggy server that allowed players to log in and run around the initial area.

Then it was hit by a Cease and Desist order by NCsoft in November 2011. The website was seized, the forums went dark, and progress completely stopped. One thing was made abundantly clear to everybody: NCsoft was not going to tolerate the development of servers for their games, even four years after they were shut down.

^ NO WONDER this "secret server" *using the original game code, not an emulation of it* = dangerous for it to get a lot of publicity. :-\

PS: Can you edit the OP to point to that previous thread, I feel like it is a weird "out of nowhere" reply to a pre-existing topic...

This is the whole thread... it was just posted in the Archive COH/COV Section.  The OP was referenced to CoH/CoV being dead.

OK thanks.

By the way, clicking through some of the history at the bottom of that link you shared.

Wow.

See this from 2 years ago... what a @%&#ing insult.

Quote from: https://massivelyop.com/2017/03/22/heres-why-everyones-pissed-off-about-city-of-heroes-npcs-in-ncsofts-moba/
Yesterday, NCsoft took the lid off a secret it?s clearly been working on for a while: The company means to introduce a notorious and well-known City of Heroes NPC as one of the characters in its upcoming MOBA, Master x Master.

Statesman.**

...A small but dedicated group of gamers has been actively boycotting NCsoft ever since the disrespectful and cheap sunset. And following that, multiple spiritual successors sprang up. The first and probably biggest was City of Titans, which pulled in almost $700,000 in Kickstarter funding all by itself, just a sliver of how much goodwill money NCsoft threw away when it nuked Paragon.

Ultimately I think your level of outrage over this probably hinges on whether you still believed there was a chance players could negotiate for a license to use the City of Heroes IP ? or more. That?s exactly what Titan Network folks were doing back in 2014, so it?s not some wild theory. It seemed plausible. It hasn?t gone anywhere publicly, but it?s always been there as a possibility. Anyone who was hanging on to that dream saw it shattered yesterday.

It?s highly unlikely NCsoft will sell or license the IP or servers if it?s using chunks of that IP in a brand-new MOBA.

MOBA players won?t care about freaking Statesman, and we won?t play their MOBA, so what do they get out of this? I suppose now they?ll have the fun of explaining why their new character has sparked mainstream controversy in the western world. Enjoy reiterating your ?it?s just business? sunset history to a whole new generation of gamers who prior to this didn?t even know what City of Heroes was!

All these years later, NCsoft still doesn?t understand how beloved City of Heroes was ? or why. The people who boycott NCsoft games aren?t going to be be mollified by this in any way. All it?s done is reignite a smoldering flame of rancor.

** https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ra7O7LqNh5w Check out the comments!

"so... this is why they refused any @%&#load of money for CoH IP.... to recycle characters for a game that will close after 6 months of beta anyway"

"This doesn't make us City of Heroes fans feel better, in fact, it insults us. You're making it clear to me and others you don't want us to get our game back"

"HOW DARE YOU. HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE CITY OF HEROES PLAYERS WITH THIS TRASH.
NCSoft has yet to do absolutely ANYTHING to do right by the fans of CoH.  There has been zero attempt to release the server source code under an Open-Source License. There have been zero realistic attempts to find a buyer for the intellectual property. NCSoft has jerked around and torqued off just about every single publisher or developer who expressed interest in obtaining the IP.

And now this? THIS?  Using a CoH character in a MOBA JUST so NCSoft can look at an intellectual property regulatory board and say with a straight face: 'Hey, we're still invested in the property, we're still using it.' "

^ Wikipedia says "In November 2017, NCsoft decided to close the game in January 31, 2018." -- which is pretty much what folks were predicting would happen in the YouTube comments back in 2017.

I have a dream; a dream of old with the new; a dream of when RW was young brought back to modern gaming.  My dream would be all active RW members back playing a single game together on a regular basis, the new and the old playing as one!

This is a dream today... maybe this CoX revival could make a dream something more real... maybe.... /thoughtposted
