Yah, so I had tickets to last night's Oilers game, with the Sharks coming to town. Our kids had things to do, though, and needed rides, so I sent my wife with a friend to the game while I drove the kids around.
I missed a helluva game! At least I recorded it and could watch it from home after the kids were all done being driven around.
The Oilers' newest goalie, Ben Scrivens, made 59 saves to record a shutout. That's a new NHL record for the most shots faced while still recording a shutout. There were another 41 shot attempts that were either blocked or went wide of the net, meaning there was an even 100 shot attempts.
Hey Oilers, how about some defence, eh?
My wife said the atmosphere was electric as all of the fans showed their appreciation for Scrivens' hard work through multiple standing ovations during the game.
It was CRAZY I started watching after dinner and just... couldn't stop!
He got interviewed after the game, and completely downplayed his own heroics, instead saying it was a team win and the guys in front of him were doing a great job keeping the shots to the side and clearing the puck after a scramble.
Nice of him to say, but ENTIRELY DISCONNECTED FROM REALITY. This was 59 shots from the blue line, this was shots from right in front of the net, ten feet from the crease, banged off his helmet and then had to make a giant second save... The guy was absolutely on fire, and I'm glad the fans showed their appreciation because let me tell you, if he'd let in one of those, his teammates would've slumped their shoulders and stopped trying.
Although he did make a valid point about it being a team win - he didn't score the winning goal, just kept the score against low enough so that his teammates' goals were worthwhile. And their goals were nice goals.
Anyway, CowGirl said that Antti Niemi, the Sharks' goalie, was doing butterflies and stretches during tv timeouts, obviously to try and stay in the game because there were long stretches where the puck would only get past the center line when the Oilers dumped it to get their linechange in.

Very much way deep into "Does Not Compute!" territory!

Okay, that makes sense -- good point, if only our team had a typical NHL-level defense, that woulda made this kind of record-breaking not necessary! :P
