Title: Moby rides a hoverboard
Post by: Darren Dirt on March 06, 2014, 12:42:57 PM
After all, 2015 is NEXT YEAR so you'd think a prototype (http://www.thewrap.com/funny-or-die-hoverboard-huvrtech-tony-hawk-christopher-llyod) is out there by now, right?

Nice fake.  Well done, but clearly they're pulling their legs up rather than being pushed up into the air by the board.

All jokes aside, here's a REAL product inspired by what you would imagine it feels like riding the BTTF "hoverboard"; it got its Kickstarter fulfilled by 600%:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/4422853/onewheel-the-self-balancing-electric-skateboard <-- I gotta say "good game, Segway*, YOU LOSE."

*just compare the initial protoype specs -- similar top speed and max range to SW, but OW kills SW when it comes to price and "hands-off"ness (can't think of a better word).
http://www.rideonewheel.com/
vs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segway_Inc.#Models

also OW wins vs SW in the "would Darren ACTUALLY BUY ONE OF THESE THINGS" test. Cuz only one of them can be carried with one hand on an elevator or riding the train or bus. #WANT

I still want to buy a "One Wheel".

But also maybe this:

http://lab.rekimoto.org/projects/hoverball/

Drone Ball, Hover Ball, whatever you decide to name it, just make it and GIMME!

You just know these are going to be weaponized and used as robot guards on The Island

Be seeing you

So, no joke, is a REAL "real" hoverboard** a soon reality? from LEXUS?

... but will it work in Canadian winters?

** after all, it's finally officially 2015 ... and there's already self-tying shoes (http://chainraise.com/9-incredible-inventions-that-stepped-out-of-the-movies/4/).

PS: fans of a certain other Sci fi trilogy, Why not check this (http://chainraise.com/9-incredible-inventions-that-stepped-out-of-the-movies/3/) out?

Okay I give up waiting for a TRUE "hover" board, this is close enough imo:
http://www.wired.com/2015/06/the-weird-story-of-the-viral-chinese-scooter-phunkeeduck-io-hawk/
http://www.wired.com/2015/07/rideables-video/ <-- a few of them (all under $2k! [ sadly, not featured = this $300 brand! http://www.runawaymobile.com/ ] ) put to the test.

And that "Solo Wheel" that ended up pleasantly surprising the techie host guy in the video? Its inventor has invented ... a few other things (http://inventist.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=categories&id=0&Itemid=178). #StepOneWinTheLotteryStepTwoBuyEVERYTHINGthere

(PS: bonus points for the English-ified translation of its Chinese name -- makes me think of that SNL Happy Fun Ball -- "Two Wheels Smart Self Balancing Scooters Drifting Board Electric"  ;D )

personal-sized flying car** ... or hoverboard -- which would you buy first anyway?
http://www.h2romagazine.com/zapata-racing/flyboard-air

the above Frenchman inventor ( http://zapata-racing.com/en/ ) on his 1000hp vehicle achieved a GWR for distance approx. 10x that of the 40hp vehicle of Catalin Alexandru Duru (a Canadian!) from about a year ago:
http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2015/5/video-watch-incredible-footage-of-farthest-flight-by-a-hoverboard-record-set-by-379420

Both are prototypes, not available to consumers yet of course.

Or RIGHT NOW I can purchase for just $3000 what I actually really want -- some real life superjump boots :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJGh9CO6wzU ( what's the name of the song in this montage video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLRdODUGmlA )
(also known as Jumping Stilts, Air-Trekkers, Powerbocks, Velocity Stilts, Projumps, Flyjumpers, Skyrunners, Powerskips, Seven League Boots -- via http://faviconstyle.com/blog/recreation/sports/10-power-of-jumping-stilts.html which also has some tips -- see also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJGh9CO6wzU , which recommends "Velocity Stilt" from Stiltworks Inc. )

** gotta rewatch this classic Kevin Smith sketch every few years :) http://forums.righteouswrath.com/index.php/topic,6981.0.html

Forget the jumping stilts -- you wear them, so too ... cyborgy.

Because (LOL) I completely forgot about the classic old POGO STICKS!

Apparently there is an "X-Games"** with "weird" conpetitive athletic games in the mix.

"XPOGO" is one of them. Think: BMX Bike aerial stunting with a dash of the high jump.

Saw a few clips and now think I wanna buy one of these bad boys! The technology has advanced, greatly.

Kids today, they're so lucky. (Presuming no "helicopter" parents getting in the way of dangerous fun!)

**another game in the mix: HEADIS (table tennis with a huge volleyball-sizer that is knocked back and forth with your forehead. Yeah.)
