Old news for me. If you can imagine it some of the earliest drafts were even uglier.

On the plus side fewer proprietary client side plug ins holding content ransom

I never saw this as evil but essentially necessary to avoid people continuing to use client side plugins like flash or full blown java applets both of which have been awful to patch security wise over the years and well none of the mobile platforms support.

Yeah, without html5 getting some kind of support for DRM, you'd never see the likes of netflix, or other streaming companies use it.
