Title: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Post by: Mr. Analog on November 28, 2014, 11:33:28 AM
So the new teaser trailer is out, internet is buzzing:

Not much to go on so far, but any thoughts?

Can't wait to see it.  The special effects should be glorious!  But yeah the trailer shows you practically nothing beyond these effects.

A few things caught my eye:

- Non-clone Stormtrooper
- Gimmicky lightsaber (plz do not remind us of Episode I)
- CGI rolling droid (what? no, just ... no)
- Somebody riding a popsicle into Mos Eisley

If this was 15 years ago I'd have been bouncing off the walls, as it stands now I am cautiously optimistic

I think that stormtrooper was actually not a stormtrooper.

That lightsaber looked absolutely stupid.  One little twist of the wrist and you've cut off your own hand.

The rolling droid, to me, looked like they videotaped a soccer ball and then CGIed a top on it.

The popsicle / hoverbike-but-oversized-engine-compartment wasn't that bad.

My big takeaway is that it seems they're trying to introduce a crapload of new things just for the sake of introducing new things.  Just like when a bunch of dinosaur-like animals got added to the old movies using CGI.

Yeah! Unlike the Darth Maul saber which might actually offer a tactical advantage. Here, changes for change's sake = stupidity on display. Heck, one of the related videos on YT for this? "Idiocracy". NOT JOKING.

I know right, like it's not cool enough to have a laser sword

Gotta get all the laser sword accessories
-laser cross-guard
-laser pommel
-laser grip
-laser pants
-laser flamethrowers (the kids love this one)

I just pray they have a scene with some dark jedi waving his blade around all badass and everything and Han Solo just shoots him

FUNNILY enough the merch machine is in full operation today with "#ForceFriday"

With toys and collectibles for a movie that won't be out for a few months this is beyond ballsy

So it's already December, and in anticipation of Episode VII coming out soon, sharing this in case you guys did not yet stumble upon it.

Wisecrack, back in early May of this year (on the 2nd or 3rd or something, can't imagine why that particular date) did a couple of "Earthling Cinema" episodes for...

Episode IV: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VZ92zM6a5E
Episode V: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejAUKZRTOc8

Some really witty bits in there, as usual. Including a painful pun about a Canadian-invented board game.

Not sure why they didn't do Jedi though? Blasphemy. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGOVbXF7Iog#t=44s)

They open the "next movie" review to a vote and I'm sure we'll get it eventually.

It's such a tight show, worth checking out all of them if you have the time

(I'm the one who introduces this form of intense mental drug to you guys IIRC!)

I think they were planning on doing all 3 in time for "May the 4th" but it ended up not quite getting done (or maybe not started? Since never posted.) So I doubt we will ever see it.

Unless it's currently in a secret vault and gonna be "Awakened" the week of December 18th...

J.J. Abrams is the epitome of a mediocre director

Funny how women get dumped on when they're action heroes

1 Star Ratings???

The female Stormtrooper Captain was ridiculous

I don't know what to think, which is why I'm going to the theatre sometime soon-ish, when I see reviews peppered with terms like "fan service" and "nostalgia" I get a little worried

Then again there is some interesting symmetry, Star Wars in 1977 was a callback to classic adventure serials in the 40s-50s (y'know stuff that was made 20-40 years prior) and Star Wars VII is a callback to ... actual Star Wars (made 20-40 years prior)

So... even if Jar Jar Abrams is making a movie by aping what was done before it's almost the same thing that Gungan Lucas was doing in the mid-70s

Actually it kind of blows my mind that Star Wars 7 is almost as distant to Star Wars as Star Wars was to Flash Gordon... I feel old

It's about midway through the story, so after they've gotten their job at the brewery and they discover their hero (who was self admitted into the neighboring psych ward) is somehow also working for the brewery, and the mind-control beer plot begins

(yes I have seen this movie an unhealthy number of times)

Really hard to make it spoiler free but I will say they did a great job of making it feel like the originals.

Enjoyed it to say the least.

I read these spoilers on a comic site (don't worry, not real spoilers):

Darth Binks steals a dilithium crystal from the Star Lord to help a Time Lord fight the gorram Reavers.  It's a good thing the Lords of Kobol showed up and, with the help of Buck Rogers, saved the Minbari fleet.

Did you catch each of the references?

Should be a Ming reference in there too! (I just recently watched "Ted")

I haven't watched Ted so have no idea what you're talking about...

Ming the Merciless maybe? That'd be Flash Gordon, which would fit with all the other sci-fi references.

Yup that is the Ming you are looking for. Highly recommend Ted, the trailer dies not do it justice. It has heart which I did not expect -- not just a stoner comedy.
