Title: RUST
Post by: Mr. Analog on April 22, 2016, 12:14:51 PM
So, this game has changed quite a lot since it launched, much more Minecraft-y, along the lines of ARK but without the dinos.

I'm thinking about setting up a server, I'm pretty sure almost everybody owns a copy through various deals / bundles. Anybody interested in trying out Rust?

Mags has been bugging me to setup an ARK server, but I haven't had the time...

I'd play ARK as well on a fresh server yeah

I like the look of Rust because it seems simpler to me

Just skim-watched a few gameplay videos on YT.

Appears (in my opinion) pretty... barbaric.

On pub servers it's mayhem, but on friendly servers its fantastical to see what people build

That's why I'm interested in starting my own server more than just playing on some pub server

My god, Rust is fun! Even playing on my own

It's like Minecraft but with a survival bent, I have a server up, I will post connection info in a private sub-forum

HOLY CRAP this game is fun. I was playing on the RighteousWrath server by myself and managed to build a swanky little house

Then I got attacked by a bear and lost all my goodies (whoops!)

Anyway, many of us got RUST as part of humble bundles etc, it really is worth playing right now, check it out :)

So I have been looking at Rust and I am not sure...

Would we want a friendly server?

A lot of it seems to be geared toward base building, raids and blueprint farming. Without loss the blueprint farming seems like it would be easy?

The base building looks fairly prefab.

It's a lot of fun, it's got that kind of Minecraft quality to it where you want to build stuff and find new things. Even without other players there's plenty to contend with like bears and wolves.

At the end of the day it's a beautiful world that you can sink some time into. Getting started without a lot of competition isn't that hard, there's plenty to get into up the tech tree. A lot of things you can't build until you find and learn the blueprints for, that alone make it kind of a quest for stuff.

I didn't think I'd be into it, which is why I set up my own server to try it, but after having played a few hours (Steam says 12 but it's more like 6) there's something kind of of addicting to it.

It's certainly not the game it was last year or even 2 years ago

Also by "friendly" I mean "you need to belong to the Righteous Wrath Steam group", it's not available to pubbies

By friendly I mean not raiding each other.

I'm sure the air-drops would be contested. The maps are pretty big, I've limited it to 30 players max, but still, gotta compete for resources

But also working together to build amazing stuff, just like Minceraft, but like prettier

I'll do a video on it at some point, you'll see

I have watched a few videos of both now and they are very similar, however ARK seems to be much more PvE focused and has a more single player RPG leveling system.

RUST is more PvP focused with a more random luck collection advancement system. Doing some reading it appears that server side weekly wipes seem to be common on RUST as players top out their gear fairly quickly.

Yup, it's not a super deep game but it is fun for an alpha.

I'll look into setting up an ARK server too, I have ARK, I want to play it with Mags. Maybe do some videos on it

Sort of just doing my research on them at the moment... Got to love youtube game play videos.

Nether one really seams like a "builder" to me in the same way minecraft is... For the most part it seems you get prefab junk shacks of different detail levels.. Which can still look really neat however the primary purpose of these seems to be defense not building flexibility.

There is like a whole Dino training game in ARK and watching the videos looks like not getting killed by dinos is actually a major PvE issue... In RUST it looked like wolves and bares are sparse, but maybe I need to watch more videos.

Booth look interesting.

I had 3 bears attacking me yesterday, fortunately I built a second level to my house and crafted a scrap shotgun, they take a lot of shots to take town. Also they can kill you in 1 to 1.5 hits (with bleed damage) and they eat your corpse if they took damage so you can't get your stuff back

Scrazy

ARK update: ARK dedicated takes a @%&#ton of memory, so I won't be able to host and play (bwah bwuh). The config is very similar to RUST tho

Anyway, RUST will be up this week (unless i hear otherwise) feel free to check it out

I had a huge haul of goodies, was trying to avoid the attack helicopter and bam! Bear @%&#s up my day

Ok well I don't have ether game in my library is anyone else interested in playing? RUST is around $20 and ARK around $30 right now...

I note that RUST dedicated server only runs on windows but has lower requirements, ARK has a linux dedicated server but higher system requirements all around.

I might be willing to give ether one a shot but am waiting to see if there is interest from others, one way or the other..

They are both Semi generated island survival games with building..

I might try ARK. Not super interested in Zombie games or Rust.... I dunno. Probably not worth spending $50 on them if I play them once.

There are no zombies in Rust anymore (as of 2014)

Like I say, I got it as part of a Humble Bundle, I might actually have more copies kicking around. If I do I'll let people know

I will pop on if I could get it super cheap... Not feeling confident in RUST at the moment... ARK looks fairly rich but intense on system requirements, however I think I have enough resources to still host an ARK server if we need one.

Yeah, I could set up an ARK dedicated on my file server if the RAM requirements weren't so steep, one of the reasons why I wanted to try out RUST is the client / server are fairly lightweight.

EDIT: I looked through my email for codes, I only had the one from a Humble Bundle deal I got a long time ago (Yogscast Christmas donation I think?)

So turns out I don't own RUST.  Does anyone have spare copies I can buy or do I need to purchase myself?

If people want to concentrate on ARK for now that's fine, I can shut down the server no problemo

In fact I may have to to install my new SSD internally

TBH: I'm surprised I can boot from the external slot
