A have been keeping an eye on hololens and other VR type gear and one thing I thought was odd a while ago was a Microsoft Rep getting defensive about the field of view.
Well recently I had the opportunity to try real HoloLense units and found out exactly what some people where upset with.. While the overlay tracking is really good and so is the visual quality. You are basically looking through a horribly small window that is in the center of your view. To view large things you actually have to back up a lot where it would normally be in your field of view.
For me this killed all enjoyment in using it, if they can increase the field of view I think it will be completely amazing, but in the interim here is a video I found that illustrates what the actual FOV looks like from the users point of view.
It switches at about the 50 second mark in this video.

That's disappointing wow

Wow, I'm surprised its so small. Considering.
The tech is non the less very cool and for moments you forget about your limited view until your eyes try and track a large object and you realize it is clipped to that little area.

Yep looks amazing from the "cameras" POV but unless something changed the true POV is like the video I linked.
Looks like the same window to me. They just crop out the area around the lense.

Could be but there is a second screen observer mode that just generally has a full view.
Someone created a Portal port that recognizes augmented reality real physical objects - see how the box reacts to the environment: https://youtu.be/aWRSCABrdR8

POST-POST-Grunch: ACTUALLY, Tom's linked tweet was just a GIF, but I found the full 1+ minute video on YT demonstrating the Portal VR app. Which is unparalleled awesomeness start to finish. Also, "Jon Ive" parody account ftw. #DesignerJokes

...and to think THIS Gizmodo demo was from October 2015... It took 16 months for someone to make a Portal gun? O_O

Interesting how the algorithm reacts to the full 3 dimensional environment (walls, COUCH).
