Hey everybody, why don't you turn off your set for a week and see what happens?

Title: TV Turn Off Week
Post by: Tonnica on April 25, 2005, 09:49:04 AM
Turning off the TV for a week is an absolute snap for me. The shows I do like to watch are usually reruns (sometimes very old reruns at that) and I don't take advantage of satellite cable movies very much, if at all. TV just doesn't matter all that much to me.

At the same time I'm not very interested in new radio either. The music is okay but when the new stations unenticingly command continous generic thugging it I lose interest. Yes, it could be that I'm just jaded against new media altogether but it's been a long time since something new coming out (that wasn't some form of cartoon) really excited me.

I'll probably be not touching that dial (to the "on" setting) all week. It does make me a bit glum to think about how little I'll miss from something that can at its fullest potentail bring us news, sports, weather, music, historical programmes, plays, literature, movies, and shut-your-brain-off entertainment quickly and conveniently.

Funny that yesterday I was telling my wife that I want to get away from getting sucked into the boob tube (once I start, I can't stop!), and so I'd be starting a play-by-post D&D game up to fill my evenings.

www.tvtorrents.com <- for all your TV needs, but not watching TV.  Oh, and use Firefox, as a couple of their advertisers use ActiveX or something (i wouldnt know)

Not a bad idea, but I know someone will ruin it and talk about it.
Does this tv shutdown include computers? (excluding work)

I wholeheartedly agree, Edmonton needed an alt rcok station simply because The Bear and KROCK both SUCK, lots of great music and few interruptions combine to make it a great station to listen to.

Where else can you hear the Pixies, Ramones and REM all in one hour?

Games and such, but I will mostly just be turning the boob tube off.

I think I might be changing what I listen to when driving.  Hopefully they transmit with some decent power; my antenna seems to allow a lot of static these days (betcha it's rusting from the inside!)

Where else?

http://www.edge.ca/

My brother listened to the Edge all the time back in Hamilton. When Sonic came here he was all like "It's totally like the Edge back home" (I think he went to Edgefest if I recall) and so I was like "no way" and he's like "way, it's like the Edge!" and I chuckled within myself at his unwitting Hollowheads reference ;) :D

And add to that list "Sublime" (that darn oft-repeated and now stuck-in-my-head "Date Rape" song!) and today an oldie by Everlast! /me likes the variety!

Mr. Analog,  I recall a the wife of one of your fellow drones is a former DJ.  Will she be applying at the station?  Apparently, they're doing interviews.

That she is, so if you want to make some anonymous e-mails reccomending "that Jaimie Hendrix who used to be at the Bear" go right ahead ;)

Wow I thought I was totally "Touched By A Celebrity" when I worked at Consumers Distributing 14 years ago and Bill Matheson bought $200 worth of toys and crap for his grandkids... But you, my friend, a fellow worker of the husband of Ms. Hendrix? Wow. You were getting free concert swag every week, wasn't ya? *skin colour increases its degree of greenness*

I spent a great deal of time talking with Wil Wheaton when he was in town. That back when he was still on STNG. Yes he was a computer geek even back then.

Jeepers, how did a discussion about The Manifold Evils Of Television turn into a mention of Wil Wheaton and his beloved ex-cat? :P

So...lastnight on Survivor Steph got voted off.  It was sorta sad as she deserved to win.  CSI was the same ol, but like only 1/3 the cast was in it, sort odd, but not bad.  I missed Iron Chef as CSI was on at the same time.

...eat that no TV people :)!!!

The beast lured me back today, I slept most of today (gotta headcold while waiting for the extremely slow University bus down on Whyte last night).

Curse you one-eyed harbringer of entertainment!
