Title: AMD SEMPRON Line?
Post by: Mr. Analog on May 25, 2005, 10:35:48 AM
Me wanty upgrade and this seems like a cheaper way to go from 2000+ to 3000+ (only ~$130). Anyone out there in cartoon land know why I shouldn't buy one?

 L2 cache is VERY low....

Barton 3000XP = 512KB
Sempron 3000XP = 128KB

...buy the barton for the cheap upgrade.  I went from a 2500 to 3200

Would the Barton be compatible with my A7V333 though?

Outta be.  You might need to flash it, but the FSB on a 3000 barton is only 166 (166x2=333).   The 3200 XP might be a problem as the FSB becomes 200.

I would bet it works like a charm.  drop it in, fire it up.

With the upcoming pin change on the Athlon64s, it would be a very tough sell for me on those.

Since you have a 2000+, you may want to double check what speed RAM you have.  You may have one or more 266 mhz memory modules you'd need to replace.

As suggested, they are cheaper because somethings missing.. You want to game, so I would suggest a complete chip.

couldnt have said it better myself.

..Ustauk has a good point as well.  if you got some 266mhz DDR, you could be in trouble, but also note that 512MB DDR400 is $58.95 at memoryexpress (which is now the most uber CPU shop eva!).
