So the Alberta Avenue Business Association (AABA - 118Ave Businesses), along with the Grand Prix Edmonton, are putting on a Shine & Dine in my parking lot at work today and tomorrow:
QuoteThe Alberta Avenue Business Association will be hosting our first annual outdoor event to celebrate Alberta Avenue and to help kick-off the Grand Prix auto race in Edmonton. We are holding this event on Friday July 8th and Saturday July 9th, 2005 ? from noon to 8:00pm on both days. The event will take place at NAIT?s parking lot K at 106 Street and 118th Avenue.
Shine & Dine has been organized with the support of NAIT, West Edmonton Grand Prix and the 40 plus car clubs in the Edmonton area.
We believe that this celebration, named ?Shine & Dine on Alberta Avenue? will draw people throughout the city, as well as from neighboring communities. An enlivening ambiance will be created with a unique combination of cars, food, music, and people. It is estimated that this event will draw over 8,000 people during the two days.
The celebration will include the following:
Show & Shine: This will consist of the display the hottest cars from in the Edmonton area with their owners. The cars will be displayed at NAIT parking lot K. We will feature over 200 cars from 40 car clubs from the Edmonton area. There will be a number of commercial exhibitors will participate at this event.
West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix will have their racing cars for display and drivers for fans to meet and obtain autographs.
Taste of the Avenue: There will be food court featuring food and restaurant businesses from Alberta Avenue. The foods offered will be diverse and eclectic ? ranging from tradition, to El Salvadorian, to Malaysian.
NAIT ? Automobile Open House During this event NAIT will have an open house of their Automobile facilities and programs for the public. Commercial exhibitors will be located at this site.
Entertainment on the Avenue: There will be two venues for various forms of street entertainers and dance groups. Entertainment will range from Salvadorian dancers and a Latino DJ, to a saxophone quartet to bagpipes.
Slowly since noon today cars and venues have been showing up. The police Hummer and escpecially the Tiburon are worth a look. Supposed to be over 200 cars during the event and even some of the Grand Prix stuff, but so far no Indy cars. I have pics and will try and post them for ya soon.
Here are some pics, and I know Shae is gonna want to see the Tiburon ones:

It's unfortunate they souped up a front-wheel drive instead of finding a decent rear-wheel drive car. I'd be impressed with a souped up 200sx or 240sx, or an older Celica or Supra. A Tiburon? Just doesn't do it for me.
The dash isn't really useful, either. The tachometer and shift light should be mounted closer to the driver's sight-line, above the dash. Putting all those gauges right next to where the SRS is (according to the lettering on the dash) isn't really the smartest idea.
Nice to know the cops can afford to spend $150,000 or more on souped up cars, but can't send an officer up and down Jasper Ave in the evening to make the female worker ants feel safe.
And no, I couldn't spot the NoS :(
FYI for you gear heads who like parking downtown, Edmonton City is planning on raising meter prices come this fall, good olde EDE looking out for the most retarded ways of making money in the downtown core!
Hey remember when Jasper was the cool place to hang out? No, you probably don't!
Incedentally parking meters were originally invented to curb downtown congesion, whoops I guess it didn't work, yet most cities still use it, Gord darned "utopians" and thier crazy ideas!
