In Canada - yes it is currently legal to own (not so in the US - classified as a tool to circumvent a technological protection measure under the DMCA) - however if bill C-60 passes here then it won't be anymore. And whether its legal or not, there's still no reason for Macrovision to know whether I'm using it or not, and its not like a real update is going to be posted that I might miss out on either. I still recommend turning automatic updates off.
