Guy makes some neat furniture out of FedEx boxes and gets sued when he puts a webpage up, as part of the lawsuit the DMCA is cited! Little kids and hobos beware!
http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,68492,00.htmlHere's his page (Coralized in case of Slashdotting):
http://www.fedexfurniture.com.nyud.net:8090/
ROFLMAO!
Geez, he even made a shelf above the computer desk:
http://www.fedexfurniture.com.nyud.net:809...lshaped_800.jpgOkay that's it, does FedEx offer their boxes for free? Will they change that policy now? ...re. the legal issue, well he shoulda covered the TM branding with masking tape or something...
After reading a
letter sent to his lawyer, it's clear that FedEx's problem is really only the fact that he used "fedexfurniture.com" for his domain - they're worried people will think that FedEx makes furniture nowadays.
But typical for lawyers, they sent him a "cease and desist" letter, instead of a "please change your domain name so that people don't think we make furniture" letter.
He also tried making business cards and t-shirts to hand out with the domain name on them. I could see that they would be concerned he's trying to make money off their trademarked name.
I am on FedEx's side regarding the domain name, but I think they made a horrible mistake in the way they communicated with mr. Avila.
A bed strong enough for him to jump on it!
I gotta wonder though, howmuch does it cost to purchase a fedEx box... I would think at least a dollar or somthing... Really, how does one come to have that many FedEx boxes in their possesion?
response (warning: PDF, also you have to rotate it 180degrees) "...While FedEx may hope that its shipping boxes are used only for shipping ... your client's intellectual property attorneys are improperly flexing their muscles in an effort to censor Mr. Avila"
And the shipping packages are apparently FREE. According to one of the sites covering the issue...
They are indeed free. However the last time i was there (Christmas 2004) they had the boxes behind the counter so i had to ask for them.
