Title: Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Post by: Melbosa on September 26, 2005, 11:31:44 AM
Well I had a chance to play this on the weekend.  The intro movie is sweetly done if you have ever played previous games (lots of signature moves done in CG).  The co-op play is fun too (which is all I played).  Basically this is an RPG/Slasher game, using Mortal Kombat moves but in a Action-based RPG (similar to Fable's interface).

There isn't the down to down-right to right + A moves (Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter games always had similar configurations on the controllers for moves), but instead more of an X-Men Legends/Fable like interface for pulling off moves.  The only moves that require down, down, left, left, B are the Fatalites, which you need to advance your character to find (I think - just got the manual, so going to check into this further).  You can also pull off teamed attacks, although not sure how we were doing that also.

The environments are pretty interactive too, with puzzle like layouts for some.  CG cuts are pretty good IMO, but the gameplay is where its at with this one.  Weapons that you can pick up can be sweet too, adding to a feel that this is more than just a RPG rip of the fighting game (don't confuse this with the RPG mode in Deception - the previous MK game).

So I urge you to check this one out.  Fun so far, although I wish I could figure out how you get more fatalites... oh well back to the manual.

8) Sounds pretty sweet! A quick online search reveals there's lotsa lists out there: http://www.google.ca/search?q=%22Shaolin+Monks%22+list+of+fatalities

Also re. the ability to do them, one poster said this...

Any Fatality will work once you have the ABILITY to do that finishing move... once you perform a new one, it will be listed in your inventory ("unlocked")
